Cherreads

Chapter 24 - Chapter 24: Brotherhood Rekindled

The mansion's training grounds were quieter now than before. Sunlight streamed through tall windows, falling across the polished floor and the faint scent of cedar lingering in the air. Kai stood near the edge, still tense but calmer, fingers flexing slightly as he adjusted to the rhythm of being back.

Jake appeared from the doorway, strides confident and purposeful, his presence warm and fiery as always. He stopped just a few feet away, smirking faintly—but this time, the smirk wasn't teasing. It carried something softer, something like relief.

"You ready?" Jake asked, tone casual but carrying the weight of two years of worry.

Kai raised an eyebrow, arms crossed, trying to maintain his usual composure. "Ready for what?"

Jake grinned. "For this. For us. For… you know, being brothers again."

Kai's chest tightened slightly. It wasn't just words. It was acknowledgment. It was care. Something he had avoided feeling while running, while hiding, while keeping himself separate from them all.

"I…" Kai started, hesitating. "I don't know if I can…"

Jake stepped closer, bridging the distance in a single stride. "Hey," he said softly, tone uncharacteristically gentle. "You don't have to say anything. You just… gotta let me."

Before Kai could protest, Jake threw his arms around him in a fierce hug, lifting him slightly off the ground. Kai instinctively stiffened, squirming, but Jake held firm, smiling beneath the tension.

"I missed you," Jake said, voice muffled against Kai's shoulder. "More than I thought I would."

Kai froze for a moment, then exhaled slowly, his hands gripping Jake lightly—not pushing, just holding on. "I… missed you too," he admitted quietly.

Jake pulled back just enough to look at him, his blue eyes softer than Kai remembered. "Two years, man," he said. "That's too long to be apart."

Kai shifted, a faint smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "Yeah. Too long."

Jake laughed lightly, ruffling Kai's hair like he hadn't in years. "Don't think this means I'm letting you slack off again," he teased. "We've got a lot to catch up on… and a lot of training."

Kai rolled his eyes but didn't argue. Not fully. The tension in his shoulders eased slightly as he allowed himself to be present in the moment.

"You're still the same idiot I remember," Jake continued, smirking. "But… maybe a little smarter now. Just a little."

Kai chuckled, shaking his head. "Don't push it."

Jake grinned and bumped him lightly with his shoulder. "Nah. Just making sure you know I've got your back. Always have, always will."

Kai felt the warmth of that promise sink in, mingling with the complex mix of emotions he had carried for two years: anger, frustration, fear, defiance—and now something lighter. Something like trust.

"Thanks," Kai muttered quietly. "Big brother."

Jake's smirk softened into a small, genuine smile. "Anytime, little brother. Anytime."

For the first time in years, Kai felt the weight of running and hiding lift slightly. He wasn't fully free—not yet—but the bond with Jake, tested and strained though it had been, was healing.

And in that small, quiet moment, Kai realized something he had forgotten while away: no matter the distance, no matter the rebellion, no matter the power struggles—they were still brothers.

And that was unbreakable.
