Chapter 14 - Chapter 14 — Death Beneath a False Sky

The decision to seek the path toward the God Realm should have been the beginning of a direct ascent, a bold step toward truth and confrontation, yet the world Kael lived in was not so simple, because every action he took now echoed far beyond the mortal realm, reaching into the awareness of beings who had ruled existence long before he was born, and who would not allow something like him to rise unchecked.

Orin knew this.

And that was why, as the three of them stood beneath the fading light of dusk, his expression carried a weight far heavier than before, as though he was about to guide Kael not just toward strength… but toward sacrifice.

"There is a path," Orin said slowly, "but you are not ready to walk it yet."

Kael's jaw tightened.

"…then I'll become ready."

Orin shook his head.

"That's not the problem," he said, "the problem is… you're already being watched."

Silence followed.

Mira's expression hardened.

"…then we move carefully," she said.

Orin looked at both of them.

"…no," he replied, "you disappear."

Kael frowned.

"…what?"

Orin stepped closer.

"The gods are not patient," he continued, "they will not send the same kind of force again… next time, they will send something that does not fail."

Kael clenched his fists.

"…then I'll get stronger before they come."

Orin's voice dropped.

"They won't give you that time."

The truth in those words settled heavily.

Unavoidable.

Mira looked between them.

"…then what are we supposed to do?" she asked.

Orin's gaze returned to Kael.

"You die."

A Plan Built on Loss

The words struck like a blade.

Mira stepped forward instantly.

"…no," she said firmly, "we're not doing that."

Orin didn't react.

"It's the only way," he said, "if the gods believe he's dead, they will stop searching… at least for a time."

Kael's breathing slowed.

"…and that time…" he said quietly.

"…is what you need to grow," Orin finished.

Mira shook her head.

"This is insane," she said, "you're asking him to vanish, to leave everything—"

"To survive," Orin interrupted.

Silence fell.

Kael looked down briefly, his thoughts racing, not with fear, but with the weight of what this meant, because this was not just about hiding… it was about losing everything he had only just begun to gain.

"…if I do this," he said slowly, "I can't come back."

Orin nodded.

"Not as you are now."

Mira stepped closer to Kael.

"…don't do this," she said, her voice lower now, more personal, "we can find another way."

Kael looked at her.

And for the first time…

He hesitated.

Because she wasn't wrong.

But neither was Orin.

"…if I stay," he said quietly, "they'll kill everyone around me."

Mira's hands tightened.

"…we'll fight."

Kael shook his head.

"…not them," he said, "not yet."

Silence stretched between them.

Painful.

Real.

Then Kael exhaled slowly.

"…tell me the plan."

The Trap Is Set

The plan was simple.

Too simple.

And that was what made it dangerous.

Orin would draw out a powerful force, something strong enough to convince even the gods that Kael had been eliminated, while Kael himself would push his power to its limit, creating a moment of destruction so convincing that no one would question the outcome.

"…and after that?" Kael asked.

Orin's voice was calm.

"You leave," he said, "alone, under a different name, a different life."

Mira shook her head again.

"…this is madness."

Kael looked at her.

"…it's necessary."

Mira stepped closer.

"…and what about me?" she asked.

Kael's expression softened slightly.

"…you live," he said.

Her eyes narrowed.

"…that's not an answer."

Kael hesitated.

Then—

"…you move forward," he said, "get stronger… and when the time comes…"

Mira's voice dropped.

"…you come back."

Kael nodded once.

"…I'll find you."

Silence followed.

Then Mira looked away.

"…you better."

The Final Night

The night before everything changed felt strangely calm, as though the world itself had paused, unaware of the shift that was about to take place, as Kael stood alone once more near the ravine, the place where his strength had begun to take shape.

Mira approached quietly.

"You always end up here," she said.

Kael gave a faint smile.

"…it's where I stopped being weak."

Mira stood beside him.

"…you were never weak."

Kael didn't respond.

Because he knew better.

"…when this is done," Mira said after a moment, "you don't forget who you are."

Kael looked at her.

"…I won't."

Mira's voice softened slightly.

"…and you don't die for real."

Kael let out a quiet breath.

"…I'll try not to."

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Mira stepped closer.

"…you better come back," she said quietly.

Kael nodded.

"I will."

The Fall That Ends a Life

Morning came without warning.

And with it—

The end of Kael's life.

Or at least…

That's what the world would believe.

The sky cracked again, far more violently than before, as a massive presence descended, far stronger than the last, its aura alone tearing through the air as the ground trembled beneath it.

This was no mere servant.

This was something closer to the gods themselves.

"…target located," the figure said, its voice echoing unnaturally.

Kael stepped forward.

Alone.

Mira watched from a distance, hidden, her hands clenched so tightly they trembled.

Orin stood nearby.

Waiting.

The battle began instantly.

The force was overwhelming.

Far beyond anything Kael had faced before.

And yet—

He did not hold back.

Every ounce of power he had trained surged outward, the ground breaking, the air distorting, as he clashed against something that should have crushed him instantly.

"…insignificant," the being said.

Kael's voice roared back.

"Not anymore!"

The clash reached its peak.

Power against power.

He pushed everything.

Every last drop.

The mark burned brighter than ever.

Then—

Orin moved.

A sudden, precise strike that disrupted the flow of energy for a single moment—

And Kael unleashed everything.

A blinding explosion tore through the area, light swallowing everything in its path as the ground split open and the sky itself seemed to recoil from the force released.

Mira screamed his name.

"KAEL!"

Then—

Silence.

A Death Accepted

When the light faded, nothing remained.

No body.

No trace.

Only destruction.

The being stood at the center of it, its expression unreadable as it scanned the aftermath.

"…energy collapse confirmed," it said.

"…target eliminated."

Above, the crack in the sky began to close.

The mission—

Complete.

A Life Reborn in Shadows

Far from Ashen Hollow.

Far from the eyes of gods and men.

A figure stumbled through a narrow riverbank, their body broken, their breath weak, but their eyes…

Alive.

Kael.

No.

Not anymore.

He collapsed briefly, his body trembling as he dragged himself forward, every movement a struggle as the last of his strength threatened to fade.

"…can't… stop…" he muttered.

His voice was weaker.

Different.

The world believed he was dead.

And from this moment on…

He would make sure it stayed that way.

"…no more Kael…" he whispered.

His eyes closed briefly.

Then opened again.

Colder.

Sharper.

"…I'll become something else."

The wind moved softly through the trees.

Carrying away the name that once was.

And in its place…

A new identity would rise.

Hidden.

Forgotten.

But far more dangerous.

The World Moves On

Back in Ashen Hollow, the news spread quickly.

Kael was dead.

Mira stood silently at the edge of the settlement, her expression unreadable, her eyes fixed on the distance where everything had ended.

"…you better be alive," she whispered.

Orin stood behind her.

"…he is," he said quietly.

Mira didn't turn.

"…good."

Her voice hardened.

"…because when he comes back…"

She clenched her fists.

"…the heavens will burn."
