Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: It Was Still Alive

Ayan didn't move.

His eyes remained fixed on the creature lying on the ground, its body twisted in ways that didn't make sense. For a moment, it looked still—lifeless, as it should have been.

Then—

It twitched.

Not a random movement.

Not a final reflex.

Something deliberate.

Ayan's breath slowed.

"…It's moving."

The words came out quietly, almost as if saying them too loudly would make it worse.

Beside him, Aelira didn't react.

She was already watching.

The creature's limb jerked again, sharper this time, its body shifting slightly against the dirt. A faint sound followed—wet, uneven, like something inside it was trying to move.

Ayan took a step back instinctively.

"…This isn't normal."

The thought came immediately.

Clear.

Certain.

The creature's head tilted.

Slowly.

Unnaturally.

Its eye—half-clouded, dim—shifted toward him.

And then—

It moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

The body that had looked broken moments ago twisted violently as it lunged forward, its limbs snapping into place with unnatural force. The ground beneath it cracked slightly as it pushed off, closing the distance in an instant.

Ayan reacted—

But not fast enough.

"…!"

He stepped back sharply, barely avoiding the creature's strike as it passed in front of him. The movement was clumsy, unbalanced—not like the controlled actions he was used to in the game.

This wasn't the same.

There was no system guiding him.

No timing assistance.

No margin for error.

The creature turned again.

Its body jerked mid-motion, as if something inside it wasn't fully aligned. Its head twisted too far, its limbs lagging slightly behind, but its speed—

Didn't slow.

"…This thing—"

Ayan's thoughts cut off as it lunged again.

This time—

He moved.

Instinct.

Memory.

The knowledge from countless in-game battles pushed his body forward. He sidestepped, his movement sharper now, more controlled, but still—

Not enough.

The creature's limb grazed his side.

Ayan felt it immediately.

Pain.

Real.

Sharp.

His breath caught as his body tensed, his hand instinctively pressing against his side. The sensation wasn't overwhelming, but it was there—undeniable.

"…This is real."

The realization hit harder than the attack itself.

There was no HP bar.

No damage indicator.

Just—

Pain.

And consequence.

The creature didn't stop.

It turned again, faster now, its movements growing more erratic. Its body bent unnaturally as it charged, its limbs striking at angles that didn't follow any pattern.

"…I can't predict it."

Ayan stepped back again, his breathing uneven.

This wasn't like the game.

There was no pattern.

No rhythm.

Just chaos.

"Move."

The voice came suddenly.

Sharp.

Clear.

Ayan reacted instantly.

He shifted to the side without thinking.

And in the next moment—

The creature's attack passed exactly where he had been standing.

Ayan's eyes widened.

"…Aelira—"

He didn't finish.

Because she had already moved.

Aelira stepped forward.

Calm.

Unhurried.

Her movements didn't match the situation.

Didn't match the danger.

And yet—

They were perfect.

The creature lunged again.

Aelira tilted her body slightly.

The attack missed.

Not by chance.

Not by reaction.

But—

As if she had known it was coming.

Ayan froze.

"…How—"

The thought didn't finish.

Because the fight continued.

The creature twisted again, its movements becoming more aggressive, more unstable. Its body cracked slightly as it moved, small sounds echoing with each motion.

It attacked again.

Faster.

More violent.

Ayan stepped back again, trying to regain control, trying to adapt.

But—

This wasn't something he could control.

"Ayan."

Her voice cut through his thoughts.

"Stay back."

The words were soft.

But absolute.

Ayan hesitated.

Just for a moment.

And that was enough.

The creature shifted direction mid-attack.

Toward him.

Too fast.

Too sudden.

Ayan tried to move—

But his timing was off.

The attack landed.

A sharp impact hit his shoulder, forcing him back as pain surged through his body. His vision blurred slightly, his breath catching as he stumbled.

"…!"

He dropped to one knee, his hand pressing against the ground to steady himself.

The pain was real.

Clear.

Unavoidable.

"…This is bad."

The thought came instantly.

Because now—

He understood.

If that attack had been stronger—

If it had hit differently—

He might not be standing.

Or breathing.

The creature turned again.

Preparing another strike.

And then—

Aelira moved.

Faster than before.

Faster than it should have been possible.

Ayan didn't even see the moment she closed the distance.

One second she was beside him.

The next—

She was in front of the creature.

Her movement was smooth.

Effortless.

And completely—

Unnatural.

The creature lunged.

Aelira didn't dodge.

She stepped forward.

Her hand moved.

And in that instant—

Everything stopped.

The creature's body froze mid-motion.

Not slowed.

Not interrupted.

Stopped.

As if something had seized it completely.

Ayan's breath caught.

"…What…?"

Aelira's hand remained extended.

Her expression calm.

Unchanged.

"I told you."

Her voice was soft.

"I won't let you."

The words settled quietly.

But they carried something deeper.

Something heavier.

Then—

The creature's body collapsed.

Not like before.

Not like a normal death.

It didn't fall naturally.

It didn't settle.

It broke.

Its form twisted inward, its structure collapsing as if something inside it had been removed. The surface cracked slightly, dark lines spreading across its body.

And then—

It began to dissolve.

Not into light.

Not into particles.

But into something darker.

Something thicker.

Ayan stared.

"…That's not how monsters die."

The words came out slowly.

Because this—

Wasn't normal.

The remains of the creature sank into the ground slightly, leaving behind only faint traces of something that didn't belong.

Silence returned.

Heavy.

Unsettling.

Ayan's breathing remained uneven as he slowly pushed himself up, his body still reacting to the pain from the attack. His shoulder ached, the sensation lingering longer than he expected.

"…That hurt."

He muttered quietly.

Aelira turned toward him.

Her gaze softened slightly.

"You're injured."

Ayan let out a small breath.

"…Yeah. I noticed."

He looked down briefly, his hand brushing lightly against the spot where the attack had landed. The pain had dulled slightly, but it hadn't disappeared.

"…So this is how it works."

No healing.

No instant recovery.

Just—

Reality.

Ayan lifted his head.

His eyes moved toward Aelira.

She stood there.

Calm.

Unharmed.

Unchanged.

As if nothing had happened.

Ayan's expression shifted slightly.

"…What was that?"

The question came out quietly.

Aelira didn't respond immediately.

She simply looked at him.

"…You already know."

Her answer was soft.

Ayan frowned.

"…No. I don't."

Aelira tilted her head slightly.

"It was something that shouldn't exist."

The same answer.

The same vagueness.

Ayan exhaled slowly.

"…That's not enough."

He stepped forward slightly, his gaze fixed on her now.

"…You moved before it attacked."

A small pause.

"…You knew where it would strike."

Another pause.

"…And you stopped it."

His voice lowered slightly.

"…What are you?"

The question lingered.

Clear.

Direct.

Aelira didn't answer immediately.

For a moment—

She simply looked at him.

Then—

"I'm the one who brought you here."

The words came softly.

But this time—

They felt different.

Heavier.

More real.

Ayan didn't respond.

Because now—

He understood something he hadn't before.

This world was dangerous.

Unpredictable.

And whatever Aelira was—

She wasn't just part of it.

She was something beyond it.

And that—

Was far more terrifying than anything they had just faced.
