Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: Blades of the Church

Chapter 12: Blades of the Church

The following days settled into a deliberate, tense rhythm. Kuoh Academy continued its normal routines — classes, club activities, and the occasional curious stare from students who sensed something different about the Occult Research Club. But behind the ordinary facade, the Emperor's peerage operated with heightened focus. Every training session, every strategy discussion, and every quiet conversation served to strengthen their foundation before the storm arrived.

The Emperor stood in the courtyard behind the old school building, arms crossed, observing the team with sharp, calculating eyes. The Boosted Gear rested dormant on his left arm, but its presence was a constant reminder of the power he now commanded. Level 5 had brought noticeable improvements — smoother energy flow, sharper instincts, and a more refined control over his fate theft abilities.

"Again," he commanded calmly.

Kiba moved first, demonic swords materializing around him as he launched a coordinated assault. The Emperor parried each strike with precise, minimal movements, using short bursts of crimson energy to disrupt Kiba's rhythm without overwhelming him. "Your Sword Birth is versatile, but you rely too much on creation speed. Anticipate where the enemy will break. Steal their momentum before they realize it's gone."

Kiba recovered gracefully, breathing steady. "Understood. Your guidance continues to open new possibilities."

Nearby, Akeno unleashed controlled lightning strikes against moving targets the Emperor had set up with demonic energy constructs. Each bolt was elegant and devastating. She glanced toward him occasionally, her violet eyes carrying that growing mixture of playfulness and deeper interest. The conversation from their previous sparring session still lingered between them — unspoken but present.

Asia provided support from the sidelines, her Twilight Healing ready at a moment's notice. She watched the Emperor with quiet admiration, her trust deepening naturally through consistent protection and guidance rather than sudden leaps.

Koneko trained in raw power, smashing through reinforced barriers with focused strikes. Her small frame hid immense strength, and she occasionally glanced at the Emperor with silent approval.

Rias oversaw the session from a short distance, her crimson hair tied back practically. She no longer needed to assert herself as the sole leader — her role had evolved into that of the Emperor's queen, supporting his vision while maintaining her status as Buchou in name.

During a short break, the Emperor pulled Akeno aside for a private word while the others rested. They stood beneath the shade of an old tree, the afternoon sun filtering through the leaves.

"You've been pushing yourself harder lately," he observed, his voice low and steady. "Your lightning control has improved significantly."

Akeno smiled, but there was less teasing and more genuine curiosity in her expression. "It's because I have someone worth pushing for now. Watching you handle Dohnaseek… the way you turned the situation so completely in our favor without unnecessary violence… It made me realize I want to stand beside that kind of strength. Not just as a member of the peerage, but… closer."

The Emperor studied her for a long moment, letting the silence build naturally. He could feel the slow, steady progress of Charm Theft working on her — not a sudden breakthrough, but a deepening pull. "Closeness requires trust, Akeno. Complete trust. I don't collect pieces for show. When you're ready to offer more than power, I will accept it. Until then, continue proving yourself in training and in the coming conflicts."

Akeno's cheeks gained a faint warmth. She nodded slowly, her voice softer. "I understand. I won't rush… but I won't stay distant either."

Their conversation ended there, leaving a tangible tension in the air — progress without forcing the pace.

Later that afternoon, Ravel Phenex arrived once again. This time she brought more comprehensive notes on high-class devil magic and political maneuvering within the Phenex clan. Her visits had become almost routine, each one lasting longer than the last.

"I thought these might help with your preparations," she said, placing the documents on the table with careful elegance. "Especially if Kokabiel's movements affect noble alliances."

The Emperor accepted the materials with a nod of acknowledgment. "Your insight is valuable, Ravel. The Phenex clan's regenerative knowledge could prove useful against fallen angel light-based attacks. Would you like to stay and observe today's strategy discussion?"

Ravel hesitated, her tsundere nature flaring briefly. "I'm only here to share information… not to get involved directly." Yet she stayed for the full discussion, offering occasional sharp comments about potential political repercussions if the fallen angels succeeded in provoking war. By the time she left, her interest had clearly deepened, though she maintained her composed exterior.

As evening approached, Raynare returned from her latest reconnaissance. She landed lightly on the rooftop where the Emperor waited with Rias.

"Updates," she said without preamble. "Dohnaseek is still contained and slowly breaking. I've kept the fallen angels believing he's on a deep undercover mission. However, the Church side is moving. A pair of exorcists is confirmed heading to Kuoh. One is Xenovia Quarta — a powerful swordswoman carrying an Excalibur fragment. The other is Irina Shidou, a childhood friend of Issei from the original timeline. They're here to investigate the Holy Sword situation and likely to retrieve or destroy any fragments Kokabiel might target."

The Emperor absorbed the information calmly. "Good. We monitor their arrival without direct confrontation unless necessary. Kiba's connection to the Holy Swords makes this personal for him. We use their presence to our advantage — gather intelligence on both the Church and Kokabiel's agents."

Rias frowned slightly. "The Church won't be easy to deal with. They view devils as enemies."

"Exactly," the Emperor replied. "Which is why we don't reveal our full hand. We observe, we steer, and we steal what we can from the situation."

That night, the Emperor and Rias spent time together in a more reflective manner. Their connection remained deep, but the focus shifted toward long-term vision. Rias spoke at length about her concerns for the peerage's future and how the Emperor's leadership had given her a sense of purpose beyond her family's expectations.

"You've given me more than freedom," she said quietly, resting against him. "You've given me direction. I want to see how far we can go together."

The Emperor's response was measured and commanding. "We will go as far as our stolen fates allow. The others are beginning to align. Akeno is close. Asia trusts deeply. Ravel is wavering. When the time comes, they will choose this path because it becomes inevitable."

The next morning brought the first sign of the Church's arrival. During lunch break, Kiba approached the Emperor privately, his usual calm demeanor strained.

"I sensed holy energy near the town outskirts earlier. It matches the signature of an Excalibur. If the Church agents are here, they may try to destroy any fragments Kokabiel is after… or use them against devils."

The Emperor placed a hand on Kiba's shoulder, his grip firm. "Your past with the Holy Swords is your strength, not your weakness. When they arrive, we will face them together. Observe first. Act only when we have the advantage."

Kiba nodded, gratitude visible in his eyes. "Thank you. Your leadership… it makes facing this easier."

By afternoon, the Emperor received confirmation through Raynare's network: Xenovia Quarta and Irina Shidou had entered Kuoh. Xenovia was a serious, blue-haired exorcist wielding Durandal, while Irina was more cheerful and carried Excalibur Mimic. They were staying at a local church and had begun discreet investigations.

The peerage gathered for an emergency strategy meeting.

"We don't engage directly yet," the Emperor instructed. "We monitor their movements. Kiba, you will shadow them carefully — use your speed and swords to stay undetected. Akeno, prepare defensive barriers around key locations. Asia, stay ready to heal. Rias and I will coordinate from here. Raynare will continue feeding misinformation to keep Kokabiel's side distracted."

Akeno smiled, her eyes meeting the Emperor's with clear intent. "Understood. I'll make sure our defenses are… electrifying."

The meeting ended with clear assignments. As the others dispersed, Akeno lingered for a moment.

"Issei-kun," she said softly. "When this situation with the Church agents develops… I want to fight beside you more directly. Not just as support."

The Emperor regarded her steadily. "Then prove it in the coming days. Actions speak louder than words, Akeno. When your loyalty matches your power, you will have the closeness you seek."

Akeno's smile deepened with quiet determination before she left.

That evening, as the Emperor reviewed plans on the rooftop with Rias, a new system notification appeared:

**Side Quest: Church Agents — Progress: 15%**

**Objective: Navigate the arrival of Xenovia and Irina while advancing preparations against Kokabiel.**

**Current EXP: 1,780 / 3000 (Level 5)**

The Emperor looked out over the town, where faint traces of holy energy could be sensed in the distance. "The blades of the Church have arrived. We will turn their presence into another thread we can weave — or cut."

Rias leaned against him, her voice filled with quiet confidence. "With you leading, I believe we can face anything coming."

The first real contact with the Church agents would happen soon. Kiba had already begun shadowing them. Xenovia's serious demeanor and Irina's familiar face promised complicated interactions ahead.

The Emperor smiled faintly into the night — cold, ambitious, and in complete control.

The storm was no longer approaching. It had begun to break.

**Chapter End Teaser**

Xenovia Quarta and Irina Shidou's investigation would soon intersect with the peerage in unexpected ways. Kiba's past would surface. Akeno's desire for deeper closeness continued to build. Ravel's next visit might push her closer to a decision. And Kokabiel's agents were moving in the shadows, waiting for the right moment to strike.

How would the Emperor handle the holy swords without revealing the full extent of his system? Would the Church agents become allies, enemies, or new threads to steal? And how much longer could they delay the inevitable clash with Kokabiel?

Holy blades were about to meet stolen fates — and the Emperor was ready to rewrite the outcome.
