As the heavy royal carriage violently rattled along the secluded, winding dirt road, Isla completely ignored the passing scenery, her mind beautifully and hopelessly lost in the intoxicating memories of the passionate night she had just spent in Dorian's arms.
A soft, deeply contented smile naturally graced her lips as she vividly recalled the overwhelming heat of his bare skin, the agonizingly sweet taste of the dark wine, and the profound, unbreakable promises they had whispered in the shadows.
Suddenly, the carriage jolted to a harsh, abrupt halt, violently snapping her out of her beautiful reverie.
'Princess, we have finally arrived at your destination,' the driver announced quietly from outside.
Isla carefully pulled aside the heavy velvet curtain and peered out, her brilliant blue eyes widening in sheer, unsettling apprehension.
Before her stood a massive, terrifyingly desolate ruin—an ancient, crumbling stone fortress swallowed by dense, creeping vines and cloaked in a heavy, unnatural fog that made the entire place feel incredibly eerie and profoundly mysterious.
Gathering the heavy skirts of her elegant day gown, she cautiously stepped down from the carriage.
The very second her booted foot hit the damp earth, the driver immediately cracked his whip, attempting to turn the horses around to leave.
'Wait a moment, where exactly are you going?' she called out, deeply confused by his sudden departure.
'The King gave me strict, absolute orders to leave immediately and only return to fetch you when the sun sets this evening, Your Highness,' the driver replied hastily.
'Oh, Dad explicitly ordered that? Alright then, you may go... but do you happen to know where exactly my father is waiting inside?' Isla asked, looking around the desolate landscape.
'I honestly do not know, Princess; I was simply commanded to drop you right here and depart,' he answered, before quickly driving the heavy carriage away into the dense, swirling mist.
Left entirely alone in the suffocating, heavy silence, Isla took a deep breath and took her very first, tentative step across the crumbling stone threshold of the ancient ruins.
The absolute moment her foot crossed the invisible boundary, a terrifying, incredibly dark, and violently ancient energy viciously surged straight up from the earth and violently crashed into her body.
Her brilliant blue eyes instantly snapped open, glowing a blinding, unnatural shade of menacing red as she let out a piercing, agonizing scream.
'Ahhh! Ahhh!' she shrieked in absolute terror as an invisible, overwhelming force violently ripped her feet right off the ground, suspending her helplessly in the cold, rushing air as the chaotic, foreign magic viciously tore through her royal veins.
Suddenly, the King's booming, furious voice echoed like thunder through the ancient, crumbling walls.
'She is my own flesh and blood—release her immediately!' he roared with absolute, terrifying authority.
The invisible, suffocating grip instantly vanished, and Isla violently crashed down onto the hard, unforgiving stone floor, gasping desperately for breath as the terrifying red glow completely faded from her eyes.
'Dad... Dad, what on earth is all of this?!' she choked out, trembling heavily as she desperately tried to push herself up from the cold ground.
'Isla, my child, I specifically summoned you to this completely isolated, heavily warded location because this ancient place is bound by such incredibly powerful magic that not even a single bird can dare to flap its wings within these walls without my explicit permission,' the King explained, his voice deadly serious as he stepped out from the deep shadows.
'Just now, you entered these wards without my direct, protective shielding, which is exactly why the ancient defenses violently attacked you.'
'But Dad... what could possibly be so incredibly secretive and urgent that you had to bring me to this terrifying place?' she asked, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs.
The King's stern face darkened with a grave, chilling intensity.
'Because the time has finally come, Isla... because "he" has officially arrived.'
'Who... who exactly has arrived?' she asked, a sudden, sickening chill shooting straight down her spine.
'The exact entity for whom you were originally gifted this magnificent, deadly serpent magic,' the King revealed, his eyes burning with a dark, ruthless ambition.
'I have felt his overwhelming, ancient presence within our borders.'
Isla's mind violently flashed back to the dense, terrifying shadows of the jungle yesterday.
'And perhaps... perhaps I have entirely felt him too, Dad,' she whispered, her breath catching painfully in her throat.
'Do you know, when I went out into the forest with Prince Lucier yesterday, I think I might have actually seen him... but in that absolute, terrifying chaos, I completely failed to understand exactly what I was looking at.
But now... now it is all starting to make terrifying sense.'
'Yes, Isla, and before it becomes far too late to act, we absolutely must fulfill our ultimate, long-awaited purpose,' the King declared firmly.
'However, Isla, right now, your magical powers are simply not strong enough to accomplish what is absolutely necessary.'
'What do you mean, Dad?' Isla protested, a fierce spark of defiance igniting in her chest.
'I already possess enough dark, destructive power to easily kill a fully grown man or slaughter a massive, bloodthirsty beast!'
'But he is completely, fundamentally different from all of those pathetic, ordinary creatures,' the King countered sharply, his voice dropping to a terrifying, deadly whisper as he stared down at his daughter.
'To face him, you must possess the absolute, overwhelming power required to completely and utterly destroy him... not merely the strength to temporarily hold him back.'
