Episode 9 — Shift
The deal didn't start with trust.
---
It started with silence.
---
Bram stood facing the group leader, arms relaxed, eyes steady.
---
The man studied him carefully.
Not aggressively.
Not casually either.
---
Trying to figure him out.
---
"…you're serious about this," the man finally said.
---
Bram gave a small shrug. "Serious enough to not waste time. So let's skip the part where you test me and get to the part where we both gain something."
---
One of the men behind the leader scoffed.
"…you talk like you already have control here."
---
Bram glanced at him briefly.
"…I don't need control," he said. "I just need something you don't have."
---
"…and that is?"
---
A slight pause.
Then:
---
"Understanding."
---
That irritated them.
Good.
---
"…big word," the second man muttered.
"…hope you can back it up."
---
Bram's gaze shifted back to the leader.
"…you've been here longer. You've mapped parts of this ridge. You know where things are… and more importantly, where they aren't."
---
The leader didn't deny it.
---
"…we've done our share of work," he said slowly.
"…and you want access to that."
---
"Not access," Bram corrected.
"Exchange."
---
"…you haven't given anything yet."
---
Bram smiled slightly.
---
"Wrong. I already did."
---
"…when?"
---
He gestured lightly toward the battlefield behind them.
---
"The Fangrunner."
---
Silence.
---
That landed.
---
"…you're saying that was intentional?" the leader asked.
---
"Everything I do is intentional."
---
That wasn't arrogance.
That was positioning.
---
"…fine," the leader said after a moment. "We share limited map data. You show us how to deal with that thing properly."
---
"Not deal," Bram said.
"Control."
---
"…same difference."
---
Bram shook his head.
"…that's why you're losing people."
---
Tension.
---
Maya shifted slightly beside him.
"…you don't have to say it like that," she muttered.
---
Bram didn't even look at her.
"…yes, I do."
---
The leader exhaled slowly.
"…show us."
---
---
CUT
---
Across the ridge—
Another group moved fast.
---
Not here for negotiation.
---
Weapons drawn.
Eyes scanning.
---
"…we're late," one of them said.
"…others got here first."
---
"…then we take from them," another replied.
---
Simple logic.
---
Dangerous logic.
---
---
Farther ahead—
The Fangrunner had returned.
---
Not to the same spot.
---
Higher ground.
---
Watching.
---
Waiting.
---
---
CUT BACK
---
Bram crouched near a cluster of shards.
---
This time, slower.
More deliberate.
---
Maya watched closely.
"…what are you actually doing?"
---
"…learning," he said.
---
"…you keep saying that, but you're not explaining anything."
---
He picked up a shard, turning it slightly in his hand.
---
"…you ever notice how everything here reacts to energy?"
---
"…yeah, that's obvious."
---
"…no," he said calmly. "It's predictable."
---
She frowned.
"…what's the difference?"
---
Bram glanced at her.
---
"…reaction is random. Prediction means you can use it."
---
That shut her up for a second.
---
"…so what, you're just going to keep throwing rocks at monsters?"
---
A small pause.
---
Then he smiled.
---
"…if it works, yes."
---
"…that's insane."
---
"…that's efficient."
---
---
He stood up, turning toward the group leader.
---
"…watch carefully," Bram said.
"Because I'm not repeating this for free."
---
---
The Fangrunner moved again.
---
Fast.
---
Targeting a lone scout.
---
---
Bram didn't chase.
Didn't rush.
---
He stepped sideways—
Adjusted his angle—
Picked his moment—
---
Then threw.
---
Not at the monster.
---
Past it.
---
---
The Fangrunner reacted instantly.
---
Changed direction.
---
Just like before.
---
---
"…again," Bram said calmly.
---
Another shard.
Another throw.
---
The creature moved—
Exactly where he wanted.
---
---
"…drive it there," Bram said, pointing.
"…high ground limits its options."
---
The leader reacted immediately.
"…move!"
---
This time—
They followed his direction.
---
Not perfectly.
---
But enough.
---
---
The Fangrunner hesitated.
---
For the first time—
---
It was being pressured.
---
---
"…now finish it," Bram said.
---
They did.
---
Clean.
---
Efficient.
---
---
Silence followed.
---
Different this time.
---
Not confusion.
---
Realization.
---
---
"…you weren't controlling it," the leader said slowly.
"…you were guiding it."
---
Bram shook his head slightly.
---
"…same outcome."
---
---
Maya stared at him.
---
Not impressed.
---
Concerned.
---
"…you planned that way too fast," she said quietly.
"…that's not normal."
---
"…you're still thinking in terms of normal," Bram replied.
---
"…and you're not?"
---
He looked at the dead Fangrunner.
---
Then back at her.
---
"…not anymore."
---
---
CUT
---
Far beyond the ridge—
Inside a fractured zone—
The rift flickered again.
---
More stable this time.
---
More… active.
---
Three figures stood near it.
---
Watching.
---
"…they adapt quickly," one said.
---
"…too quickly," another replied.
---
"…then we don't observe anymore."
---
A pause.
---
"…we test them."
---
---
CUT
---
At the ridge—
The deal was already changing.
---
The leader stepped closer.
---
"…we'll give you more than maps," he said.
"…but this isn't a one-time thing anymore."
---
Bram's eyes sharpened slightly.
---
"…good," he said.
"…I wasn't planning for it to be."
---
---
Behind them—
Another group was watching.
---
Not approaching.
---
Not speaking.
---
Just observing.
---
And not with curiosity.
---
With intent.
---
---
The ridge wasn't just a hunting ground anymore.
---
---
It was becoming a market.
---
---
And Bram—
---
Was standing at the center of it.
---
---
"Control isn't about force…
it's about making everything move the way you want."
---
