Chapter 34 - Chapter 34: The Hidden Burden

The sun was fully up now, casting long, golden shadows across the valley, but the warmth of the light could not reach the cold spot behind my ear where the secret was hidden. I walked out of the house, trying to keep my expression calm, but every time I looked at the people of our village, I felt like a stranger among them. They were celebrating the water and the recovery of Ammar, but I knew that the very thing that saved us—the technology of the old world— was part of me in a way I could never explain. I saw Omar standing by the fountain, talking to some of the younger men about building a new irrigation system. He looked so happy, so full of life, that for a moment, I wanted to turn around and run back into the shadows. How could I tell him that the woman he loved was actually Subject 014?

Sarah, you are finally awake, Omar said, his face lighting up the moment he saw me. He walked over and reached out to take my hands, but I find myself flinching slightly before I could stop myself. His smile faded, replaced by a look of deep concern. What is it? Is it Ammar? Is he sick again? No, no, he is fine, I said quickly, trying to force a smile that didn't feel real. I just didn't sleep well. The voices... the sounds from the station are still in my head. Omar took a step closer, his eyes searching mine with that tenderness that always made me want to tell him everything. We did it, Sarah. We got the medicine and we came back. The drones are gone. You don't have to be afraid anymore.

He reached out to brush a strand of hair away from my face, his fingers moving toward the very spot where the small, hard bump was hidden. I pulled away again, my heart racing like a trapped bird. Omar, please, I just need some time alone, I whispered, not daring to look him in the eye. I could feel his confusion and his pain radiating off him like heat. He didn't understand why I was pushing him away after everything we had been through together. I saw him drop his hand, his expression hardening into a look of quiet sadness. I didn't mean to crowd you, he said softly. I just wanted to make sure you were okay. He turned to walk away, and I wanted to scream, to call him back and tell him the truth, but the words felt like broken glass in my throat.

I watched him go, feeling a deep sense of loneliness even in the middle of our thriving village. I touched the scar behind my ear, the skin feeling sensitive and strange. The voice from the device was quiet for now, but I knew it was just waiting for the right moment to speak again. I realized that my silence was becoming a wall between me and the person I loved the most. I was protecting him from the truth, but I was also losing him in the process. As I looked at the clean water flowing from the fountain, I wondered if the price of our survival was going to be my own happiness. I had the medicine, I had the water, but I was carrying a burden that felt heavier than the ruins of the entire world.
