Chapter 9 - Chapter 9 — The Core

The rain didn't stop, but Damián no longer felt it the same way. His body lay sprawled across the cold asphalt, breathing with difficulty as each heartbeat seemed to strike from within, reminding him how close he had been to dying—how close he still was—and even so… he remained conscious.

That alone was a victory.

But the system didn't celebrate.

The system advanced.

[User Status: CRITICAL]

[Vital functions unstable]

[Recommendation: Immediate attention]

Damián let out a faint, choked laugh, barely audible, as his gaze drifted between the falling drops in front of his eyes, blending with the flickering light of the nearby streetlamp.

*Right… immediate attention…* he thought with irony. *As if I had a choice.*

He tried to move.

Failed.

Pain shot through him instantly, forcing him to stop—but this time, what he felt wasn't frustration.

It was analysis.

Because something had changed.

Again.

[PARTIAL CORE ACCESS AVAILABLE]

The notification was still there.

Waiting.

It wasn't forcing him.

It wasn't activating automatically.

It was giving him a choice.

That made him frown slightly.

The system wasn't just a tool.

It was something more.

Something that… responded.

*What are you…?* he murmured softly, not expecting an answer.

But he got one.

Not in words.

In action.

[Activating Core — Confirmation required]

[Warning: Irreversible process]

[Do you wish to continue?]

Damián didn't even hesitate.

*Yes.*

Not out loud.

There was no need.

The system understood.

[Confirmation accepted]

And then…

Everything vanished.

Not the city.

Not the sound.

Not the rain.

But the sensation of his body.

As if his consciousness had been momentarily separated from everything physical, dragged into a completely different space.

Darkness.

Silence.

But not emptiness.

There was something there.

A structure.

Immense.

Invisible in form, yet impossible to ignore.

As if he were inside something… alive.

[Initializing Core interface…]

Lines of light began to appear before him, forming patterns, symbols, structures that didn't fully make sense, yet felt right—as if his mind were beginning to adapt to something not designed for humans.

And then…

The interface took shape.

More complex.

Deeper.

More… real.

[SYSTEM CORE — ACCESS 3%]

[Available functions:]

— Advanced Evaluation

— Minor Modification

— Resource Conversion

— Entity Registry

Damián observed each option in silence, his mind trying to process what all of it meant, but one stood out immediately.

Modification.

His gaze fixed on it.

And the system reacted.

[Minor Modification available]

[Required resource: Biological energy]

[Current status: INSUFFICIENT]

That made him tense.

*…there's always a price,* he thought.

But then another option flickered.

Resource Conversion.

[Material detected: Residual energy — recent combat]

[Conversion possible]

Damián understood immediately.

It wasn't magic.

It wasn't free.

It was a real system.

Based on exchange.

*Do it…* he thought.

And the system obeyed.

[Converting…]

A sensation ran through his body.

Not pain.

Not exactly.

But… pressure.

As if something were being taken, processed, transformed into something useful.

[Conversion complete]

[Available resource: LOW]

[Minor Modification unlocked]

The interface shifted.

Now displaying something entirely new.

His own body.

Not physically.

Structurally.

Lines, nodes, values—everything represented like a schema that could be altered.

And that…

Was dangerous.

*…I can change this…* he murmured.

The system didn't respond.

But it didn't deny it either.

[Warning: Modifications affect user stability]

[Improper use may result in collapse]

Damián closed his eyes for a second.

Thinking.

Analyzing.

And then he made a decision.

He couldn't improve everything.

He didn't have the resources.

But he could choose.

His mind went straight to the most obvious.

Endurance.

Because if his body couldn't hold…

Nothing else mattered.

*END…* he thought.

[Applying modification…]

[END +1]

The change was immediate.

His consciousness was yanked back into his body in an instant, as if something had shoved him out of that internal space and back into reality.

Air returned.

So did the pain.

But something was different.

His breathing stabilized slightly.

His body… responded.

[Status updated]

[END: 6]

[Condition: STABLE]

Damián slowly opened his eyes, staring at the dark sky covered by rain, feeling how his body—though damaged—was no longer on the brink of collapse.

He was still injured.

But he wasn't dying anymore.

And that…

Changed everything.

He pushed himself up slowly, leaning against the nearby wall, his mind still processing what he had just experienced.

The Core wasn't an upgrade.

It was a tool for evolution.

But not a free one.

Never free.

[Time remaining: 18:21:09]

The mission was still active.

But now…

Damián had something more than instinct.

He had control.

Partial.

Limited.

But enough.

He looked at the empty alley where everything had happened minutes earlier—where he had nearly died, where he had crossed a line with no return.

And for the first time since it all began…

He truly smiled.

Because he understood something fundamental.

The system wasn't saving him.

It was building him.

And if he survived long enough…

He could become something that city wouldn't be able to control.

The rain kept falling.

But now…

Damián Cruz was no longer running.

He was evolving.
