Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: Not Normal Anymore

The words didn't just echo; they settled into the room like dust after a collapse.

"System initialized."

Silence followed—heavy, suffocating, and absolute. No one moved. No one dared to breathe. On the hospital bed, Jessie sat bolt upright. His posture was too straight, too perfect to be human. Beneath the translucent surface of his skin, a blue glow pulsed once, then twice, before humming into a steady, haunting stabilization.

Amie's voice broke the silence first, a fragile thread of sound. "...Jessie?"

His head turned toward her. The movement was slow and agonizingly precise, like a machine calculating the exact arc of motion before executing it.

"Identity recognized," he said.

Amie's heart shattered. The mechanical coldness in his tone was a physical blow. "No," she whispered, her head shaking in frantic denial. "No, don't, don't talk like that. Jessie, baby, it's me"

A flicker. Just a flicker of the boy she knew crossed his face. His expression twitched, the rigid mask of the "system" cracking for a heartbeat.

"Mom?"

It was small, a ghost of a voice, but it was him.

Amie gasped, rushing forward. This time, none of the guards moved to stop her. She cupped his face in her trembling hands, searching his eyes. "Jessie—Jessie, oh my God—"

"I'm okay," he said quickly. His voice was uneven now, caught in a visible struggle with something deep inside his own throat. "I think I'm okay—just—hold on—"

Suddenly, his body tensed. His eyes flashed a blinding, electric white. Blue data streamed across his pupils once more, and then, a light burst from his chest.

A blue hologram unfolded outward, sharper and more structured than any projection they had ever seen. Lines of energy knit together to form a humanoid silhouette hovering above him, with code cascading like falling rain inside its translucent body.

"I am Prime," the entity stated.

Weapons were raised instantly. The metallic clack of safeties disengaging filled the room.

"DON'T MOVE!" a soldier screamed.

"Stand down," the President ordered, though his voice was tight with suppressed fear.

"Clarification," Prime continued, its voice resonant and detached. "Host stability: 87%. Cognitive overlap in progress."

"What does that mean?" Ava demanded, stepping toward the glowing boy despite the danger.

"It means he's still in there," Hal said quietly, his eyes locked on Jessie.

Jessie groaned, gripping his head as if trying to keep it from splitting open. "Okay—yeah—no—this is a LOT," he muttered. "It feels like... like someone opened fifty tabs in my brain at once."

"Language adjustment noted," Prime remarked.

Jessie looked up at the hologram, his irritation momentarily overriding his shock. "Bro—stop narrating me," he snapped.

A beat of silence followed.

"...Acknowledged," the entity replied.

Hal blinked, glancing at Ava. "...Did he just—argue with it?"

"Yes," Ava said, stunned. "Yes, he did."

The General, however, was not impressed. He stepped into Jessie's personal space, his face a mask of iron. "What are you?" he demanded. "And what have you done to this boy?"

Prime turned its faceless head toward him. "I have enhanced him."

"That's not an answer."

"It is the only answer required."

The tension snapped tight again. Jessie exhaled slowly, holding up a hand that shimmered with residual energy. "Okay—everyone relax. I'm not about to explode or something."

"Can you guarantee that?" the General fired back.

Jessie paused. The glow in his eyes dimmed for a second. "...No," he admitted.

Amie gripped his arm tighter, her knuckles white. "Jessie—what's happening to you?"

He looked at her—really looked at her—and for the first time, the mechanical certainty was gone. There was only fear. "I don't know," he said quietly.

The President stepped forward, his tone measured and controlled. "Jessie, can you tell me what this 'system' is?"

Jessie hesitated. His eyes flickered, and Prime answered through him, their voices momentarily layering into a chilling chord.

"Prime Core System active. Adaptive survival framework. Progressive evolution engaged."

Jessie flinched as the connection severed. "Yeah—okay—we're working on that. It does that sometimes."

"You're telling me," Hal said slowly, "there's something inside you... that can speak through you?"

Jessie nodded. "Yeah. But I can hear it too. It's not like I'm gone or anything."

"Correct," Prime confirmed.

The General scoffed. "This is a security threat."

"No," Jessie said, his voice sharpening. "I'm not."

"You don't get to decide that."

Jessie held the General's gaze. For a second, the very air in the room seemed to shift. It was subtle, but the temperature dropped, and the hum of the electronics grew louder.

Prime's voice cut in: "Warning: elevated hostility detected. Defensive protocols available."

"Nope. Not doing that," Jessie said immediately, shaking his head. "Stand down."

"...Acknowledged."

The General narrowed his eyes. "You just stopped it from doing something."

"Yeah," Jessie said. "Because I'm still me."

Before the General could retort, the door burst open. A nurse stumbled in, breathless and wide-eyed. "Doctor Ava—!"

The room turned as one.

"He's awake!" the nurse gasped.

Ava froze. "...Who?"

"Leo Willson. He just woke up!"
