Chapter 1 - Shadows Over the Falls

Starlight Falls was the kind of town people only believed existed in stories—soft, dreamy, and wrapped in a quiet kind of magic. It rested between misty hills that seemed to hum in the early mornings, their peaks veiled in silver fog. The streets were narrow and charming, lined with cozy houses and glowing lanterns that flickered warmly at dusk. A gentle river ran through the heart of the town, its waters always shimmering, as though it carried starlight within it.

The townspeople loved their simple joys. Evenings were often spent by the waterfall—laughing over picnics, lying back to watch constellations, or simply enjoying the calm rhythm of life.

Among them lived three friends who had grown up together, bound not just by proximity but by something deeper.

Moon was the quiet center of the trio—a presence both calm and intense. Her piercing blue eyes held a sharpness that made it feel as though she could see through anything, though they were often hidden behind a sleek black eyemask that added to her mystery. Her raven-black hair was always tied neatly into a bun, not a strand out of place. Around her wrist sat a watch—ordinary in appearance, but far from it. It held a secret power: the ability to reverse time. A power she had never asked for. A power born from a night she could never forget. Combined with her exceptional combat skills and a near-perfect memory, Moon was the one who held everything—and everyone—together.

Rudhra was her opposite in many ways. Where Moon was composed, he was fire. With chiseled features and an effortless charm, he was admired by almost everyone in Starlight Falls. His crisp white shirt rarely changed, and his flying skating shoes were never far from reach. He lived for movement, for danger—for the thrill of pushing limits. If there was excitement to be found, Rudhra would be at the center of it.

Then there was Nicky—the spark that lit up any room. With her short pixie-cut hair and a laugh that could chase away even the darkest moods, she carried a warmth that drew people in instantly. Her bright yellow jacket stood out like sunlight in motion. Beneath her cheerful exterior, however, was strength. Her X-ray vision gave her an edge few could match, and her martial arts skills ensured she could stand her ground in any fight.

Together, they were known throughout the town—not just for their abilities, but for their hearts. Whenever trouble arose, they were the first to step forward.

The day it began felt no different from any other.

Moon sat cross-legged in her attic room, surrounded by pale blue walls and stacks of well-worn adventure books. The soft light of the afternoon filtered through the window, dust motes drifting lazily in the air.

Rudhra sprawled across a beanbag nearby, his flying skating shoes resting beside him, while Nicky leaned casually against the window, gazing outside.

"Why does every vacation here feel like a slow dream?" Moon asked, her voice thoughtful.

Nicky smiled faintly. "Maybe we just need to find our own adventure."

The words had barely settled when a scream tore through the calm.

Then another.

And another.

The peaceful rhythm of the town shattered instantly.

Rudhra was on his feet in a heartbeat. Moon reached for her eyemask, slipping it on with practiced ease. Nicky's eyes sharpened as she activated her vision, scanning beyond walls and distance.

Her expression changed.

"There's fire," she said quickly. "Smoke… people are running."

They rushed outside.

What they saw made even Rudhra pause.

Towering above the town was a monstrous spider—its massive body covered in dark, bristling fur. Its eyes burned a deep, blood-red, glowing with something far more sinister than mere instinct. At the center of its head was a strange blue marking—a hollow shape, as though something was meant to fit there.

"It looks just like the beast from the old stories…" Rudhra murmured, a mix of awe and fear threading his voice.

The creature lashed out, draining energy from anyone it caught, leaving them collapsed and lifeless on the ground.

Moon's mind raced.

A story. A legend. Something she had read before.

Her eyes widened.

"The gem," she said suddenly. "There was a gem."

She turned sharply to her friends. "Rudhra, keep it busy. Nicky, come with me—we need to find it."

Rudhra's grin returned, fierce and unyielding. "If it wants a fight," he said, stepping forward, "it'll get one."

The ancient library loomed quiet and forgotten as Moon and Nicky pushed open its heavy doors. A musty scent greeted them—old paper, worn leather, and time itself. Inside, the space stretched endlessly, shelves towering like silent guardians of knowledge. The air felt thick with secrets.

Moon moved with certainty, her memory guiding her through twisting aisles and hidden corners. Finally, they reached a secluded alcove.

There, a peculiar book rested—its lock faintly glowing.

Moon opened it.

Inside were symbols, unfamiliar yet purposeful, and a map etched in gold.

Her finger traced its lines.

"Behind the waterfall," she whispered. "Near the misty hills."

The roar of the falls grew louder as they approached. Mist clung to their skin, the air cool and heavy.

"Found it," Nicky said, her vision piercing through the curtain of water. "There's a door behind there."

They pushed through.

A stone door stood hidden, covered in ancient runes.

Moon stepped forward, eyes scanning the patterns. Her fingers moved quickly, pressing stones in precise sequences.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then—

A deep rumble.

The door slowly creaked open.

Inside, resting on an ancient altar, was a glowing blue gem.

"There it is," Moon breathed.

They returned to chaos.

Rudhra was still fighting, darting through the air with speed and skill—but the beast was relentless.

Suddenly, it struck.

A stream of venom shot toward him.

Time seemed to slow.

Moon's heart clenched.

No.

She activated her watch.

The world blurred, rewinding in a rush of motion. In an instant, she was back—just before the attack.

She ran.

Grabbing Rudhra, she pulled him out of harm's way.

"Moon…" he gasped, stunned.

"No time," Nicky said firmly. "Let's end this."

Together, they raised the gem.

Light erupted—brilliant and pure.

The creature let out a piercing screech as its form dissolved, breaking apart into shimmering dust that scattered into the air like fading stars.

Silence fell.

Then cheers.

The townspeople gathered, relief washing over them as they embraced their heroes. The river shimmered brighter than ever, its glow restored.

Moon looked at her friends, her voice soft but certain.

"We promised to protect Starlight Falls."

Rudhra smiled.

Nicky nodded.

Moon's gaze steadied.

"Let's keep it that way… together."
