Chapter 5 - Chapter 5:The Price of Defiance

The room remained silent for a few seconds after the last exchange.

No one moved.

The two who had been knocked aside struggled to get back on their feet, their earlier aggression completely gone. The confidence they carried when they first stepped in had been replaced by hesitation—and something dangerously close to fear.

At the center, the scarred youth stood rigid.

His fists were clenched, but he no longer advanced.

Because he understood.

The balance had shifted.

Not gradually—

But completely.

Lin Chen stopped a few steps in front of him, his posture relaxed yet steady. There was no sign of exhaustion on his face, only a quiet, controlled calm that made the situation feel even heavier.

"You wanted everything I have," Lin Chen said.

His voice was not loud.

But in the silence of the room, it carried clearly.

"Now," he continued, "leave yours behind."

The meaning was unmistakable.

The scarred youth's jaw tightened. For a brief moment, resistance flickered in his eyes. Pride struggled against reason, urging him to fight, to reclaim what had been lost.

But reason won.

Slowly, reluctantly, he exhaled.

"…Fine."

It was a single word.

Heavy.

Humiliating.

But necessary.

He reached into his robe and took out a small pouch, tossing it forward. The other two hesitated, glancing at each other before following suit. Their movements were slower, more reluctant, but under Lin Chen's gaze, they didn't dare refuse.

Spirit stones clinked softly as they landed.

A few low-grade pills followed.

Nothing extraordinary.

But more than enough.

Lin Chen stepped forward and collected everything without hesitation.

He didn't thank them.

Didn't acknowledge the act.

Because this wasn't a transaction.

It was the result of strength.

And in this world, strength required no explanation.

"You can go," he said.

No mockery.

No threats.

Just a statement.

The three of them didn't linger. The moment the words left Lin Chen's mouth, they turned and left, their footsteps quick and uneven as they disappeared down the corridor.

Only after they were gone did the tension in the room begin to fade.

Lin Chen closed his eyes briefly.

Inside, he could feel it again.

That faint, familiar shift.

A quiet increase.

Not dramatic.

But real.

Each victory added something to him—not just resources, not just lifespan, but experience. Control. Understanding.

He opened his eyes.

And for the first time since the fight began, he allowed himself to relax slightly.

Outside, however, the situation was far from calm.

By the time the three figures emerged, a small crowd had already gathered. Conversations stopped almost instantly as all eyes turned toward them.

The expressions said everything.

Disbelief.

Shock.

Suspicion.

The scarred youth said nothing. He didn't explain, didn't defend himself. He simply walked past the crowd, his face dark, his silence more telling than any words.

That alone confirmed it.

"He really lost…"

"To Lin Chen?"

"How is that possible…"

The whispers spread like wildfire.

Inside the room, Lin Chen could hear fragments of it all. But he didn't react. Instead, he turned his attention back to what mattered.

The resources.

And the system.

He sat down slowly, placing the items in front of him.

A brief pause.

Then—

He focused inward.

The system responded as it always did—silent, precise, unquestioning.

He considered his current state carefully.

Strength had improved.

But not enough.

Not for what was coming next.

Because he could already feel it—

The shift outside.

The change in tone.

What had happened here would not stay small.

It would spread.

And when it did—

Stronger people would come.

People who wouldn't test him.

People who would crush him without hesitation.

A decision formed quickly.

No doubt.

No hesitation.

He began to convert what he had gained.

Lifespan flowed again, that strange, intangible resource turning into something concrete. The strengthening process was smoother this time, less chaotic, as if his body had already begun adapting to it.

Power settled deeper within him.

More stable.

More controlled.

He exhaled slowly.

Better.

But still not enough.

His eyes sharpened.

He needed more.

A shadow fell across the doorway.

This time, no one spoke.

No crowd.

No whispers.

Just presence.

Lin Chen looked up.

A single figure stood outside.

Unlike the others, he didn't rush in. He didn't show curiosity or aggression.

He simply stood there.

Watching.

His expression calm.

Too calm.

The kind of calm that came from confidence—not arrogance, but certainty.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then the figure stepped forward.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

"I've heard enough," he said.

His voice was low, steady, and carried a weight that immediately set him apart from everyone before him.

"Beating Zhao Kun means nothing. Liu Feng losing is surprising, but not impossible."

He paused.

Then his gaze locked onto Lin Chen.

"But defeating the three of them…"

"That's different."

The room felt quieter.

He took another step inside.

"My name is Chen Yu."

A simple introduction.

But unlike the others—

It felt like something that mattered.

"I didn't come to test you," Chen Yu continued.

His tone remained calm.

Measured.

"I came to confirm one thing."

A brief pause.

Then—

"Are you worth dealing with…"

"Or eliminating early?"

The words were not loud.

But they carried a cold, unmistakable intent.

Lin Chen didn't move.

Didn't speak immediately.

He simply looked at him.

And then—

A faint smile appeared.

Not mocking.

Not friendly.

But sharp.

"If you're asking," he said calmly, "then you already know the answer."

Silence.

For a brief moment, something flickered in Chen Yu's eyes.

Interest.

Then—

Very slightly—

He smiled.

"Good."

The single word carried no hostility.

But no friendliness either.

Just acknowledgment.

"I'll come back," Chen Yu said.

Not a threat.

Not a promise.

Something in between.

Then he turned and left.

Just like that.

No fight.

No clash.

But somehow—

The pressure he left behind was heavier than anyone before him.

The corridor slowly returned to silence.

Lin Chen stood there for a moment, unmoving.

Then he exhaled.

His eyes darkened slightly.

"Stronger ones are coming…"

But instead of concern—

There was something else.

Expectation.

Because this time—

He wasn't the one being hunted.

He was the one waiting.
