Chapter 4 - Chapter 4:The Chess Match

Chapter 4: Friday – The Chess Match

Morning – Classroom 8-1

(Students settle in. The atmosphere is relaxed.)

Sōta: "It's Friday."

Hiroshi: "I know what day it is."

Sōta: "No, I mean it's Friday. Only five periods. Two free periods because Tanaka-sensei is absent."

Hiroshi: "I read the schedule."

Yuki: "That means extra time together!"

Hiroshi: "It means extra time to study."

Yuki: "Same thing."

(She sits close to him on the bench. He doesn't move away.)

Homeroom

Teacher: "Good morning. As you know, Tanaka-sensei is out sick. So second and fourth periods are free study. Use the time wisely."

Class: "Yes, sensei."

Teacher: "Also, there's a chess set in the library if anyone wants to play. Yamada-sensei is known to be the best player in the school. He might be there."

Sōta: "The legendary Yamada-sensei? No one has ever beaten him."

Hiroshi: "That's statistically unlikely."

Sōta: "It's true. He's been undefeated for fifteen years."

Yuki: "Are you interested, Hiroshi?"

Hiroshi: "Chess is logical. I might try."

Yuki: "I want to watch!"

Hiroshi: "It's just a game."

Yuki: "With you playing. That makes it interesting."

First Period – Mathematics (Normal)

Teacher: "Friday quiz. Short one. Five questions. Question one: Solve for x: 2x + 5 = 17."

(Students write.)

Teacher: "Question two: 3(x – 2) = 12."

Teacher: "Question three: x/4 + 3 = 7."

Teacher: "Question four: 5x – 2 = 3x + 8."

Teacher: "Question five: x² = 64."

(Hiroshi finishes first. Yuki finishes second.)

Teacher: "Asagiri, perfect as always. Hoshino, one small error on question four. Check your sign."

Yuki: "Oh! I wrote minus instead of plus. Thank you, sensei."

(She corrects it, then whispers to Hiroshi.)

Yuki: "I was rushing."

Hiroshi: "Don't rush."

Yuki: "I was thinking about your chess match."

Hiroshi: "That's not a good reason."

Yuki: "You're a good reason."

(His pen pauses. He doesn't respond.)

Second Period – Free Period (Teacher Absent)

(Students spread out. Some go to the library. Others stay in class.)

Sōta: "Library? Chess?"

Hiroshi: "Yes."

Yuki: "I'm coming."

(They walk to the library. Yamada-sensei is already there, sitting alone with a chess board.)

Yamada-sensei: "Ah, students. Anyone want to play?"

Hiroshi: "I will."

Yamada-sensei: "Asagiri, right? The genius of Class 8-1."

Hiroshi: "I just study."

Yamada-sensei: "Modest. Sit down."

(Hiroshi sits across from the teacher. Yuki and Sōta stand behind Hiroshi.)

Yamada-sensei: "Do you know how to play?"

Hiroshi: "I know the rules. I've studied openings."

Yamada-sensei: "Studied, but have you played much?"

Hiroshi: "Not against humans. Against computers."

Yamada-sensei: "Computers are predictable. Humans are not."

(They set up the pieces.)

Yamada-sensei: "White or black?"

Hiroshi: "White."

Yamada-sensei: "Bold. Make your first move."

(Hiroshi moves pawn to e4.)

Yamada-sensei: "Classic. I'll respond with e5."

(The game begins. They play quietly for several moves.)

Sōta: (whispering to Yuki) "This is intense."

Yuki: (whispering back) "Shh."

(Ten moves in. Hiroshi has a slight advantage.)

Yamada-sensei: "Not bad, Asagiri. You think several moves ahead."

Hiroshi: "I calculate."

Yamada-sensei: "Calculation is good. But chess is also about intuition."

Hiroshi: "Intuition is just subconscious calculation."

Yamada-sensei: "Maybe. Let's see."

(Fifteen moves. The board is complex.)

Yamada-sensei: "You're trying to trap my queen."

Hiroshi: "Yes."

Yamada-sensei: "But you're leaving your king exposed."

Hiroshi: "I calculated the risk."

Yamada-sensei: "You miscalculated."

(He moves his knight. Check.)

Hiroshi: "..."

(He moves his king. Yamada-sensei smiles.)

Yamada-sensei: "Now your queen is vulnerable."

Hiroshi: "I see."

(Twenty moves. Hiroshi loses a rook.)

Yuki: (worried) "Hiroshi..."

Hiroshi: "Quiet. I'm thinking."

(Twenty-five moves. Hiroshi's position is weak.)

Yamada-sensei: "You're good, Asagiri. Better than most adults I've played."

Hiroshi: "But I'm losing."

Yamada-sensei: "Yes. Because you're playing like a computer. You see the logical best move, but you don't see the human element."

Hiroshi: "What human element?"

Yamada-sensei: "Bluffs. Sacrifices that look like mistakes. Traps that don't follow pure logic."

(Thirty moves. Yamada-sensei moves his queen.)

Yamada-sensei: "Checkmate in three."

Hiroshi: "..."

(He studies the board. He sees it.)

Hiroshi: "You're right. Checkmate in three."

Yamada-sensei: "Do you want to resign or play it out?"

Hiroshi: "Play it out. I want to see how you do it."

(They play the final three moves. Checkmate.)

Yamada-sensei: "Good game, Asagiri. You have talent."

Hiroshi: "I lost."

Yamada-sensei: "Losing is learning. Every defeat teaches you something."

Hiroshi: "What did I learn?"

Yamada-sensei: "That pure logic isn't enough. You need to understand your opponent. Their habits. Their fears. Their hopes."

(Hiroshi is silent.)

Yamada-sensei: "That applies to more than chess."

(He glances at Yuki, who is standing close to Hiroshi.)

Hiroshi: "I don't understand."

Yamada-sensei: "You will. Someday."

(The bell rings for third period.)

Yamada-sensei: "Thank you for the game. Come again anytime."

Hiroshi: "I will. I want to beat you."

Yamada-sensei: "That's the spirit."

(Hiroshi stands. Yuki touches his arm.)

Yuki: "You were amazing."

Hiroshi: "I lost."

Yuki: "You lasted thirty moves against the best player in the school. That's amazing."

Sōta: "Yeah, most people lose in ten."

Hiroshi: "Losing is still losing."

Yuki: "But you learned something."

Hiroshi: "I learned that I need to understand my opponent."

Yuki: "That's important."

Hiroshi: "Maybe."

(They walk back to class.)

Third Period – Science (Physics) – Normal

Teacher: "Today: simple machines. Levers. A seesaw has a child of 30 kg on one side, 2 meters from the fulcrum. Where should a 20 kg child sit to balance?"

Hiroshi: "3 meters from the fulcrum. Because 30×2 = 20×d → 60 = 20d → d=3."

Teacher: "Correct. Next: A pulley system lifts a 100 kg weight with a mechanical advantage of 4. What force is needed?"

Yuki: "100×9.8÷4 = 245 newtons, assuming g=9.8."

Teacher: "Good. Last: A ramp is 5 meters long and 1 meter high. What is the ideal mechanical advantage?"

Sōta: "Length divided by height = 5."

Teacher: "Correct. Friday is going well."

Yuki: (whispering to Hiroshi) "You're quiet."

Hiroshi: "I'm thinking about the chess game."

Yuki: "You'll beat him next time."

Hiroshi: "How do you know?"

Yuki: "Because you learn faster than anyone."

Hiroshi: "That's not a guarantee."

Yuki: "It's a prediction based on data."

Hiroshi: "That's surprisingly logical."

Yuki: "I have my moments."

Fourth Period – Second Free Period

(Students are restless. Some play games. Others chat.)

Sōta: "We have forty minutes. What should we do?"

Yuki: "We could play chess again."

Hiroshi: "Yamada-sensei is with another student now."

Yuki: "Then play me."

Hiroshi: "You play chess?"

Yuki: "A little. My grandfather taught me."

Hiroshi: "Fine."

(They set up a board on their desk. Sōta watches.)

Yuki: "I'll be white. You can practice recovering from a loss."

Hiroshi: "That's not how chess works."

Yuki: "That's how I want it to work."

(They play. Yuki is not bad, but Hiroshi easily outplays her.)

Hiroshi: "Checkmate in four."

Yuki: "Already?"

Hiroshi: "You left your king exposed."

Yuki: "I was distracted."

Hiroshi: "By what?"

Yuki: "You."

(He pauses.)

Hiroshi: "That's not a valid excuse."

Yuki: "It's my excuse. I'm sticking with it."

(They reset the board.)

Hiroshi: "Do you want to learn how to defend better?"

Yuki: "Yes! Teach me."

(He explains a simple defense. She listens closely, leaning toward him.)

Hiroshi: "When your opponent moves here, you should move your knight here."

Yuki: "Like this?"

Hiroshi: "Yes. That protects the pawn."

Yuki: "You're a good teacher."

Hiroshi: "I'm explaining logic."

Yuki: "That's teaching."

(She moves closer. Their shoulders touch.)

Sōta: "I'm going to get a snack. You two... continue."

(He leaves. Yuki doesn't move away.)

Yuki: "Now what?"

Hiroshi: "You're too close. I can't see the board clearly."

Yuki: "Then use your other eye."

Hiroshi: "That's not how vision works."

Yuki: "It's how I want it to work."

(She smiles. He sighs but doesn't push her away.)

Fifth Period – Social Studies (Normal)

Teacher: "Last period before the weekend. Let's make it quick. Name three countries with a parliamentary system."

Yuki: "Japan, United Kingdom, Canada."

Teacher: "Correct. Name three with a presidential system."

Hiroshi: "United States, Brazil, Mexico."

Teacher: "Good. Name one with a semi-presidential system."

Sōta: "France."

Teacher: "Correct. You're all dismissed early. Have a good weekend."

Class: "Thank you, sensei!"

(Students pack up quickly.)

After School – The Walk Home

Sōta: "I'm going to the arcade. You two?"

Yuki: "Walking home."

Hiroshi: "We live across the street."

Sōta: "Yeah, yeah. See you Monday."

(Sōta leaves. Yuki and Hiroshi walk side by side.)

Yuki: "You're thinking about the chess match again."

Hiroshi: "Yes."

Yuki: "You're going to study chess all weekend, aren't you?"

Hiroshi: "Probably."

Yuki: "Can I come over? We could study together."

Hiroshi: "My apartment is small."

Yuki: "I don't mind."

Hiroshi: "Your parents?"

Yuki: "They work late on Fridays."

Hiroshi: "..."

Yuki: "Is that a yes?"

Hiroshi: "I'm not good with visitors."

Yuki: "I'm not a visitor. I'm your bench neighbor."

Hiroshi: "That doesn't qualify you for entry."

Yuki: "Then what does?"

Hiroshi: "I don't know."

Yuki: "Let's find out."

(They reach their street.)

Yuki: "So? Can I come?"

Hiroshi: "...One hour. And you have to help me analyze the chess game."

Yuki: "Deal!"

(She follows him across the street. He unlocks the door to his building.)

Hiroshi: "Don't expect anything fancy."

Yuki: "I just expect you."

(He doesn't know how to respond. He opens the door.)

Hiroshi: "Come in."

(She smiles and steps inside.)
