Chapter 8 - Mixed feelings & Signals

I sat there, holding Aaron's pale hands–stroking them gently. When he's awake, he'll see me. Remember me. And maybe after giving my parents a proper funeral leave, to live a free life. A life without his brother or any trouble.

As I gazed at him, hovering over me was a shadow–one I would soon find to have been a mistake by coming here. The constant beep of the machine is a reminder of how close I have come.

"He looks peaceful, doesn't he?"

My heart pounds, I stop stroking his hand, and slowly turn around. Why is Julian here? "Where is the drive?" he asks.

I told Ethan he can wait down by the lobby of this hospital and that it'll all be fine. The chair falls as I get up, but sadly, Aaron is still in his Coma. I back up, bit by bit.

"The drive? I don't have it," I say. "And this is a hospital, J. Please be quiet."

"Don't you dare call me J, you whore!"

He twists my arm, pushing me against the wall–my chest hitting the coolness of it. "Where is it, Lexi?" he hisses in my ear.

The door to the hospital room swings open with a loud crack. I try to use my free arm or my leg to hook it around Julian, and twist my body–pushing him away. His body hits the ground, his skull giving a loud snap.

A sharp pain shoots up my arm–the arm that he twisted. Ethan is there, holding a gun over Julian. He sneers at Ethan like a cat, ready to pounce at any chance he gets. "You won't shoot, Hunt. Not with my brother's life-support three feet behind me. One stray spark and everything goes dark."

"Try me," Ethan replied, aiming the black, sleek gun at him. Shifting his stance slightly, putting himself between me and Julian's line of sight. "Alexandria, get to the equipment cabinet. There's a manual override for the floor's fire suppression system. If those men in the hall breach, I need you to trigger the halon gas. It'll buy us thirty seconds of blindness."

Instructions meant for me. I bite down the pain and do as told, making my way to the equipment cabinet–leaving Julian and him to fight this out. My eyes scan for the manual override. The one meant for this floor's fire suppression system.

I wait until I have no other choice but to pull it.
