Chapter 36 - Chapter 36

Chapter 36

No one moved.

Not the board.

Not the assistants hovering near the glass walls.

Not even Lucien.

Because the moment Zara stepped into Vivienne's space—

Everything shifted.

"Bold," Vivienne Laurent said softly, unfazed. "But bold doesn't win wars."

Zara's smile didn't fade.

"Neither does talking."

She reached past Vivienne—

And picked up the contract.

The same one that had thrown the entire board into chaos.

The same one carrying Lucien's signature.

The same one meant to trap them.

Zara flipped through the pages once.

Twice.

Her expression unreadable.

Then—

She laughed.

It wasn't loud.

It wasn't dramatic.

It was worse.

Controlled.

Sharp.

Certain.

Lucien's eyes narrowed. "Zara?"

She didn't answer him.

Her gaze lifted—locking onto Vivienne again.

"You really thought this would hold?"

A flicker.

Small.

But there.

Vivienne tilted her head. "It already is."

Zara closed the file.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

"No," she said.

Then—

She dropped it back on the table.

"It's not."

Murmurs broke across the room.

Confusion.

Doubt.

Shift.

Dante's attention sharpened now, his earlier amusement fading slightly.

"What are you seeing that we're not?" Dante Moreau asked.

Zara didn't look at him.

"You should ask your partner," she said coolly.

Vivienne's gaze hardened—just slightly.

"Careful, Zara."

Zara stepped back, reclaiming her space without losing presence.

"No," she replied. "Now we get precise."

She turned—to the board.

And just like that—

The entire room became hers again.

"You've all read this contract," Zara said calmly. "You've all panicked."

No one denied it.

"Which means," she continued, "you've all missed the most obvious flaw."

Lucien watched her now—not questioning.

Understanding.

Zara tapped the document once.

"Clause 14."

Silence.

One of the board members hesitated. "That clause protects—"

"It voids," Zara cut in.

The room stilled.

Vivienne didn't move.

But her eyes—

Sharpened.

Zara continued, her voice steady, cutting through every layer of tension.

"This contract is valid only under full board disclosure and unanimous consent."

She let that settle.

Then—

"Neither of which happened."

A ripple.

Louder this time.

More dangerous.

Lucien exhaled slowly.

Now it clicked.

Zara's gaze slid back to Vivienne.

"Which means," she said softly,

"You didn't secure control."

A pause.

Then the blade dropped—

"You exposed yourself."

Silence detonated.

Dante straightened slightly now, his expression no longer relaxed.

"That's not enough to overturn influence," he said.

Zara finally looked at him.

And this time—

There was no softness.

No familiarity.

No past dynamic.

"Influence?" she repeated.

A faint smile touched her lips.

"You were influence."

That landed.

Hard.

Vivienne stepped forward now.

Finally.

Engaging.

"Impressive recovery," she said coolly. "But you're still reacting."

Zara tilted her head slightly.

"Am I?"

She reached into her folder—

And placed a second document on the table.

Lucien's eyes flicked to it.

Then widened—just slightly.

Vivienne didn't touch it.

Didn't look at it immediately.

Smart.

But not fast enough.

"While you were busy creating pressure," Zara said calmly,

"I removed your leverage."

The board member closest to the document opened it.

His expression changed instantly.

"Is this—?"

Zara nodded once.

"Termination of proxy voting rights."

The room erupted.

Vivienne's gaze snapped to the paper now.

For the first time—

Real disruption.

"That's not possible," Dante said under his breath.

Zara didn't even look at him.

"It already happened."

Lucien stepped beside her now.

Not leading.

Not controlling.

Standing with her.

"You walked into this room thinking you had power," he said, voice low, dangerous.

Vivienne looked up slowly.

Her composure was still there—

But now it was working harder.

Zara stepped forward again.

Closing the distance.

Finishing it.

"You used my distraction," she said quietly.

Vivienne held her gaze.

"Yes."

Zara's smile returned.

Colder now.

Sharper.

Unforgiving.

"And I used your ambition."

A beat.

Then—

"Checkmate."

Silence.

Heavy.

Unstable.

But Vivienne?

She didn't break.

Instead—

She smiled.

Slow.

Knowing.

Unshaken.

"You really think this was the move?" she asked softly.

Zara's eyes narrowed—just slightly.

Vivienne leaned closer.

Just enough for only Zara—and barely Lucien—to hear.

"Then you're not as far ahead as you think."

She straightened.

Turned.

And walked toward the door.

Dante lingered a second longer.

His gaze met Zara's.

Something unreadable passed between them.

Then he smirked.

"Still impressive," he said quietly.

Zara didn't respond.

Didn't move.

Didn't react.

But the second the door closed behind them—

The room exhaled.

Lucien turned to her.

"That wasn't the end."

Zara's gaze remained on the door.

Calm.

Focused.

Calculating.

"No," she said softly.

A pause.

Then—

Her voice dropped.

"That was her testing us."

And for the first time since the meeting began—

Zara wasn't smiling.

Because somewhere beneath Vivienne's confidence…

There was something worse than strategy.

A plan Zara hadn't seen yet.

And that?

That made it dangerous.
