Chapter 45
The word stayed in the air long after she said it.
Replace me.
For a moment, the mansion felt even larger than before.
Too much space.
Too much silence.
Like the walls themselves were listening.
Lucien didn't respond immediately.
He just watched Zara—really watched her this time.
Not the strategist.
Not the woman who controlled every room she entered.
But the one standing in front of him now.
Still composed.
Still sharp.
But carrying something heavier beneath it.
"Explain," he said finally.
Zara let out a slow breath, turning slightly toward the window again. Outside, the grounds stretched into darkness, security lights casting long shadows across the lawn.
"She's not after the company," she said. "Not really."
Lucien frowned slightly.
"That's been the entire conflict."
Zara shook her head.
"No. That's been the surface."
She crossed her arms lightly, her mind already connecting pieces.
"Vivienne doesn't just want control," she continued. "She wants position. Influence. Identity."
Lucien's eyes narrowed.
"And you think that identity is you."
Zara met his gaze.
"I know it is."
A beat.
"She's not trying to destroy me," Zara said quietly. "She's trying to take my place."
Silence settled between them again.
Lucien pushed away from the counter, stepping closer.
"That's not possible."
Zara's lips curved faintly.
"It is… if she discredits me first."
Lucien's expression hardened.
"The rumors. The photos."
Zara nodded.
"Public perception is everything," she said. "If she can make me look unstable, reckless, replaceable…"
Her voice trailed slightly.
Lucien finished it.
"Then she steps in as the better option."
Zara didn't respond.
She didn't need to.
Lucien ran a hand through his hair, frustration building now.
"She's building a narrative where you're the liability."
Zara's eyes sharpened.
"And she's doing it carefully," she added. "Nothing direct. Nothing obvious."
A pause.
"She's not attacking me," Zara said. "She's rewriting me."
That—
That hit differently.
Lucien studied her for a moment longer.
Then—
"Why you?"
Zara didn't answer right away.
Instead, she walked past him, moving toward the center of the room.
Slower this time.
Less controlled.
"Because I'm visible," she said finally. "Because I hold power people can't ignore."
She stopped.
"And because removing me changes everything."
Lucien's jaw tightened.
"Then we stop her."
Zara looked at him.
"We don't stop her," she corrected.
A pause.
"We outplay her."
Lucien held her gaze.
"And how do you plan to do that?"
Zara's expression shifted.
Not softer.
Sharper.
More dangerous.
"By giving her exactly what she wants."
That made him frown.
"Which is?"
Zara stepped closer.
Close enough now that the distance between them felt intentional.
"Access," she said.
Lucien didn't like that answer.
It showed.
"You're going to let her get closer," he said.
Zara nodded once.
"She already thinks she understands me," Zara added. "That's her weakness."
Lucien shook his head slightly.
"That's a risk."
Zara's lips curved faintly.
"So is everything worth doing."
A beat.
Lucien looked at her like he wanted to argue.
Like he should argue.
But instead—
he said something else.
"You don't have to do this alone."
Zara's expression didn't change.
But something in her eyes shifted.
Just slightly.
"I'm not alone," she said.
Lucien held her gaze.
"Then act like it."
That landed.
Zara looked away first this time.
A small thing.
But noticeable.
Silence settled again.
Then—
her phone buzzed.
Zara picked it up.
Another message.
Unknown sender.
She opened it.
A document.
No subject.
No explanation.
Just one line at the top:
CONFIDENTIAL – BOARD REVIEW FILE
Zara's eyes narrowed instantly.
Lucien noticed.
"What is it?"
She didn't answer.
She scrolled.
Fast.
Focused.
And then—
she stopped.
Lucien stepped closer.
"Zara."
Slowly—
she turned the phone toward him.
A list of names.
Board members.
Investors.
Key stakeholders.
Highlighted sections.
Notes.
Evaluations.
And next to her name—
RECOMMENDATION: REPLACEMENT UNDER REVIEW
Silence.
Heavy.
Sharp.
Lucien's expression darkened instantly.
"Where did that come from?"
Zara's grip tightened around the phone.
"She's already inside," she said quietly.
A pause.
Lucien looked at her.
"Vivienne."
Zara nodded slowly.
"Yes."
Her eyes lifted to meet his again.
And this time—
there was no hesitation.
No distance.
Just clarity.
"Now," she said,
"we stop playing defense."
A beat.
"We go after her."
