Chapter 51
The drive back to the mansion was quiet.
Not peaceful.
Just… quiet in a way that carried too many unspoken calculations.
Zara didn't look at her phone again.
Not yet.
She already knew what it meant.
Beside her, Lucien sat still, one hand resting against the door, his gaze fixed ahead.
"Executive authority review," he said finally.
Zara nodded once.
"They're accelerating the process."
Lucien turned slightly toward her.
"That's not standard."
Zara's lips curved faintly.
"No," she said. "It's not."
A pause.
"It means pressure is being applied from multiple sides."
Lucien's expression darkened.
"Vivienne."
Zara didn't answer.
She didn't need to.
The car slowed as the gates of the mansion opened.
Security stepped aside.
The world outside faded.
Inside—
everything felt controlled again.
But only on the surface.
The car came to a stop.
Neither of them moved immediately.
Then Zara opened the door.
"Come," she said.
Lucien followed without question.
Inside the mansion, the air felt cooler.
Sharper.
Zara walked straight past the living room this time—no pause, no hesitation—heading toward her study.
Lucien closed the door behind them.
"You're not reacting," he said.
Zara set her phone down on the desk.
"I am," she replied calmly.
Lucien watched her.
"Doesn't look like it."
Zara turned to face him.
"That's the point."
Silence.
Lucien stepped closer.
"They're trying to remove you."
Zara held his gaze.
"Yes."
A beat.
"And you're still letting this play out."
Zara's expression sharpened slightly.
"I'm controlling how it plays out."
Lucien exhaled quietly.
"That's a risk."
Zara didn't argue.
"Yes."
A pause.
"But so is stopping it too early."
Lucien frowned slightly.
"Explain."
Zara moved around the desk, her movements slower now—less about control, more about precision.
"If we shut it down now," she said, "we expose the breach without knowing its depth."
Lucien's eyes narrowed.
"And if we don't?"
Zara met his gaze.
"We let it lead us to the source."
A beat.
Lucien studied her.
"You're still trying to trace her access."
Zara nodded.
"She's not acting alone," she said. "Someone inside is supporting her."
Lucien's jaw tightened.
"You're sure."
Zara's voice dropped slightly.
"I don't build strategies on assumptions."
Silence.
Lucien ran a hand through his hair.
"And the board?"
Zara picked up her phone again.
Unlocked it.
Scrolled.
"They're being influenced," she said. "Not controlled. Not yet."
A pause.
"But they're close."
Lucien stepped nearer.
"And this review?"
Zara turned the screen toward him.
Internal documents.
Movement logs.
Authorization chains.
"It's not just a review," she said quietly.
Lucien looked closer.
Then his expression shifted.
"This is pre-approval."
Zara nodded once.
"They're preparing for transition."
Silence fell again.
Heavier this time.
Lucien looked at her.
"And you're still calm."
Zara's lips curved faintly.
"I'm focused."
A beat.
Lucien held her gaze.
"There's a difference."
Zara didn't respond.
Because he wasn't wrong.
Instead, she stepped closer to him.
"Listen carefully," she said.
Her voice lower now.
More precise.
"They think I'm adjusting."
A pause.
"They think I'm reacting."
Lucien watched her.
"And you're not."
Zara's eyes darkened slightly.
"I'm positioning."
That word—
shifted everything.
Lucien exhaled slowly.
"Then tell me where we stand."
Zara held his gaze for a moment longer.
Then—
"We're exactly where we need to be."
A pause.
"Right before she overreaches."
Lucien frowned slightly.
"And if she doesn't?"
Zara didn't hesitate this time.
"She will."
Silence.
Then—
her phone buzzed again.
Zara looked down.
Another message.
Different sender.
Unknown.
She opened it.
And this time—
she didn't hide the reaction.
Lucien noticed immediately.
"What is it?"
Zara didn't answer right away.
She turned the screen toward him.
A single image.
Security footage.
From inside their company building.
Late night.
Restricted floor.
A figure entering a secured office.
Lucien's eyes narrowed.
"Who is that?"
Zara zoomed in slightly.
The face wasn't clear.
But the access badge—
was.
Lucien's expression darkened instantly.
"That's—"
Zara nodded slowly.
"Yes."
A pause.
"Board-level access."
Silence.
Heavy.
Dangerous.
Lucien looked at her.
"She's deeper than we thought."
Zara's grip tightened slightly around the phone.
"Not deeper," she said quietly.
A beat.
"Closer."
Lucien frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Zara lifted her gaze to his.
And this time—
there was no distance left in it.
"No more waiting," she said.
A pause.
"She just showed me where to look."
Lucien held her gaze.
"And now?"
Zara's expression hardened.
Now—
it wasn't just strategy.
It was intent.
"We pull the thread," she said.
A beat.
"And see who unravels."
