Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: The Road to the Iron Throne

The carriage wheels groaned as they rolled over the scorched remains of the Oakhaven gate. Behind them, the village didn't look like a ruin; it looked like a tomb wrapped in purple silk. The Great Tree, once the pride of the borderlands, was now a jagged, blackened spear pointing toward a sky that refused to lighten.

Kaelen sat inside the velvet-lined carriage, his fingers tracing the rim of a crystal wine glass. Across from him, Elara sat motionless. Her emerald eyes, once vibrant and full of life, were now dull—shattered glass reflecting a world that no longer made sense. She clutched a small bundle of clothes, her knuckles white.

In the corner of the carriage, slumped like a discarded doll, was Leo. He wasn't tied up. He didn't need to be. His soul had been so thoroughly hollowed out by the [Mirror of Truth] and the collapse of the Sanctuary that he simply existed. He breathed, he blinked, but the "Hero" was dead.

[Distance: 200 Miles.]

[Passive Harvest: 'Lingering Trauma' from Elara... +15 Points/Hour.]

Kaelen took a slow sip of the wine. It was bitter, but it suited his mood. "You should eat something, Elara. The journey to Eldoria is long, and the Imperial Court is not kind to the weak."

Elara didn't look up. Her voice was a ghostly rasp. "Why are we going there, Kaelen? Oakhaven is gone. Everything is gone. Why go to the place that sent us to that forest to die?"

Kaelen leaned forward, the purple embers in his eyes glowing in the dim carriage. "Because, my dear, the people who sent us there are still sitting on gold thrones. They are drinking the same wine we are, laughing about the 'tragic loss' of a border village. Don't you want to see their faces when the 'martyrs' walk through the front gates?"

He reached out and tilted her chin up. Her skin was cold. "In Eldoria, they will call Leo a saint who lost his mind for the people. They will call me a miracle. And they will call you the sister of a legend. We are going there to claim the debt they owe us."

[Target: Elara.]

[Success: Guilt redirected into Vengeance.]

Elara's eyes flickered. For the first time since the Tree fell, a spark of something other than grief appeared. It was a dark, ugly thing—the beginning of a thirst for blood.

"I want them to feel it," she whispered. "I want them to feel the way the fire smelled when the Tree burned."

"And they will," Kaelen promised, his voice a low, hypnotic caress. "Every single one of them."

The journey took three days. Along the way, the carriage was stopped multiple times by Imperial patrols. Each time, Kaelen played his part to perfection. He would step out, leaning heavily on his cane, his face a mask of dignified grief. He would show them his "wounds"—scars woven from Abyssal mana that looked like holy burns—and point to the broken Leo inside.

"The Hero of Oakhaven has fallen," Kaelen would tell the weeping soldiers. "The Sanctuary is lost, but the Star of Valour remains in our hearts."

By the time they reached the towering white walls of Eldoria, the news had traveled faster than the horses. The common folk had already begun to whisper of the "Shadow of Oakhaven"—the man who had walked through the abyss to bring the broken Hero home.

[System Notification: Fame Level Rising.]

[New Title Progress: 'The Tragic Advisor' - 65% Complete.]

[Despair Points Accumulated from Rumors: 1,200.]

As the massive iron-portcullis of the Capital began to rise, Kaelen felt a familiar itch in his palm. This was the city where, in his first life, he had been mocked as a "useless talent." This was the city where Captain Vane—the man who had led the ambush—was currently being hailed as a Rising General.

System. Scan for 'Captain Vane'.

[Scanning... Target Located.]

[Status: Celebrating in the 'Golden Rose' District.]

[Current Mood: Triumphant.]

Kaelen's grip tightened on his cane. Triumphant, is he? Let's see how long that lasts when he realizes his 'corpse' is at the city gates.

The carriage pulled into the Imperial Square. Thousands of people had gathered. The Emperor himself hadn't appeared, but his High Chancellor, a man named Malphas who smelled of old parchment and corruption, was waiting on the steps of the Palace.

"Welcome home, brave sons of Eldoria," Malphas said, his voice dripping with false sincerity. He looked into the carriage, his eyes widening as they landed on the catatonic Leo. "Is this... is this the great Leo?"

Kaelen stepped out first, stumbling slightly for effect. He bowed his head low. "Chancellor. My friend gave his soul to hold back the tide. He is... not with us anymore. I have brought him here so the Empire might honor the man who died so Oakhaven could breathe its last in peace."

"And you?" Malphas asked, his eyes narrowing. "You are the one they call the Martyr?"

"I am nothing, Chancellor," Kaelen said, looking up with eyes full of fake, shimmering light. "I am simply the one who refused to let the darkness win. I am Kaelen, the Shield's shadow."

[System Notification: Skill Trigger - 'Abyssal Throne' (Passive Sub-effect).]

[Effect: Dominant Presence masked as Humble Authority.]

Malphas felt a strange chill. He looked at Kaelen and felt an instinctive urge to look away, but he couldn't. There was a gravity to the young man that didn't match his ragged clothes or his limp.

"The Emperor wishes to see you immediately," Malphas said, gesturing toward the palace. "And the Hero... he will be taken to the Imperial Healers."

"No," Kaelen said, his voice suddenly sharp. "Leo stays with me. He only responds to my voice. The Healers will only aggravate his condition. I will tend to him in the guest quarters."

Malphas hesitated, but the crowd was starting to murmur. To separate the "loyal shadow" from his "broken master" would look heartless. "Very well. Follow me."

As they walked through the marble halls of the palace, Kaelen looked at the statues of past heroes. He felt the [Despair System] humming. It was hungry. The concentrated hope and arrogance of the Capital was like a feast waiting to be harvested.

They were led to a lavish suite overlooking the city. Once the guards had left and the heavy oak doors were shut, Kaelen dropped the act. He stood tall, his limp vanishing, and walked to the balcony.

Below him, Eldoria sparkled with a million lights.

"Look at them, Leo," Kaelen said, not turning back to the slumped boy in the chair. "They think the war is far away. They think they are safe because they have high walls and pretty medals."

He turned to Elara, who was staring at her reflection in a silver mirror. "Tonight, Vane is celebrating his promotion. He thinks he successfully cleaned up the witnesses of his betrayal."

"What do we do?" Elara asked, her voice cold.

"We go to the party," Kaelen said, a dark smile spreading across his face. "But we don't go as enemies. We go as the ghosts he forgot to bury. System, open the [Abyssal Shop: Tier 2]."

Kaelen walked over to Leo and gently adjusted the boy's collar. He pinned the broken 'Star of Valour' back onto Leo's chest, but he did it upside down. A subtle insult that only a practitioner of the dark arts would recognize.

"Don't worry, Leo. Tonight, you're going to be the life of the party," Kaelen whispered.

He looked at Elara. "Get dressed in the finest black silk the palace has provided. We are going to show the Empire what 'Despair' looks like when it wears a suit."
