"I've seen the footage of you."
Before Fenris could speak first, Coulson stepped forward, shook his hand, then nodded toward the little spider off in the distance.
"The combat power you showed on Liberty Island was impressive. The moment I realized you were here, I knew there was no way I'd be taking Connors with me. These soldiers are mostly for appearances anyway. Against you, they wouldn't be much sturdier than paper."
"So as long as I can give some kind of explanation, that's enough. There's no need to throw their lives away."
Coulson waved the soldiers back and gave a simple explanation.
"Coulson, I'm starting to find you a lot more agreeable than Fury."
Fenris patted Coulson on the shoulder, realizing for the first time just how valuable Marvel's number one nice guy really was.
Whether he was putting on an act or not, the fact that he could act this way at all already made him far better than a certain egg-headed bastard.
"It's all just work."
Coulson smiled, then glanced at Connors slung over Fenris's shoulder.
"I don't know what you want him for. Dissection and research?"
"You think everyone's like your side?"
Fenris looked at him with open disdain.
"Fair enough." Coulson chuckled, unbothered. "Need a ride?"
"No."
Fenris waved him off, then turned and waved goodbye to Peter.
"If you ever run into someone who can shoot electricity, remember to call me."
"Someone who can shoot electricity?"
Peter froze, not understanding what Fenris meant.
"When that happens, I'll give you a gift."
Fenris smiled mysteriously, pushed off with his foot, and vanished right in front of Peter's eyes.
...
Meanwhile, outside Midtown School of Science and Technology.
Logan leaned against the steering wheel, bored out of his mind as he clipped the end off a cigar and lit it.
"Does it really take this long to clean up one lizard man?"
After stretching lazily, Logan was just about to get out of the car and move around a bit when Fenris appeared out of nowhere and casually tossed a thin, frail man into the back seat.
"So this is the Lizard from the news?"
Logan leaned closer with interest. Looking at Connors's miserable condition, he could not help letting out one impressed remark after another.
"You really beat the hell out of him."
"What, because he can turn into a giant lizard too, just like you?" Logan raised a brow and teased.
As expected, Fenris's face darkened.
"Drive."
The school was not far from New York, and before long the two of them saw the gates again.
"Professor."
When Fenris found the Professor while still carrying the unconscious Connors, he discovered that the school seemed especially lively today.
Under Ororo's organization, students big and small were all chattering excitedly about something.
"Fenris is back."
The moment he saw him, the Professor revealed a gentle smile.
"What's going on here?"
Fenris looked around in surprise.
The school was rarely this lively.
"We're thinking of taking the children to the Metropolitan Museum of Art before too long. It isn't good for them to stay shut up in the school all the time."
The Professor smiled, then shifted his gaze to Connors on Fenris's shoulder.
"So it looks like you found that child?"
"Yes, Professor."
Led by Professor X, the two of them soon arrived at the treatment room the X-Men often used.
Jean Grey was inside reading seriously. Not far away, a blue-skinned man covered in blue fur had his back to the door, bent over a table as he worked on something.
"Hank, that child is back."
Professor X called out to the figure at the table while signaling for Fenris to place Connors on the bed.
"Oh?"
The blue figure turned around, and his eyes locked directly onto Fenris.
"So you're the kid who can turn into a giant lizard?"
"My name's Hank. Everyone calls me Beast."
"Hello. I'm Fenris."
Getting called a lizard man yet again made the corner of Fenris's mouth twitch on instinct, but he still smiled and shook Hank's hand.
A moment later, noticing the increasing force coming from Hank's grip, Fenris kept his expression unchanged and quietly added a burst of strength of his own.
"Whoa!"
Pain shot through Beast's hand. He immediately pulled it back, then looked at Fenris with admiration and patted him on the shoulder.
"What an absurdly gifted kid."
"Hank is the scientist of our X-Men," Professor X explained from the side. "A great many things in the school were built through his hands."
"Fenris, your reaction chamber will be entirely handled by him as well."
"Really?"
Fenris's eyes lit up instantly.
Beast's strength spoke for itself, and even the Blackbird had come from his hands.
"By the way, Fenris," Jean spoke up from the side, interrupting the conversation, "what's the situation with the man you brought back?"
"His name is Curt Connors. He's from Oscorp. To heal his missing arm, he spliced his genes with a lizard's and turned himself into a lizard man."
Fenris gave a simple explanation.
"I broke his spine, but I think his research is extremely valuable, so I brought him back."
Hearing that, Professor X let his gaze rest on Connors's face for a moment, then nodded in understanding.
"You did the right thing, Fenris. If he succeeds, the benefits he could bring to the school would be difficult to measure."
"Cross-species gene technology..." Beast stared at Connors in amazement. "Who would've thought Fenris would go out for a trip and come back having picked up a talent like this?"
"As it happens, when I was younger, I developed a serum that can treat spinal injuries. It should fit his condition perfectly."
"What kind of medicine could possibly be that miraculous?" Jean asked curiously.
"When the Professor was young, he suffered terribly because of his abilities, so I invented that serum."
Beast shot Professor X a meaningful look.
He had not exactly been as calm and composed back then as he was now.
"The downside is that it suppresses the expression of the X-gene. But Connors is an ordinary human, so for him, the side effects are practically nonexistent. As long as he gets his injections on time, there won't be a problem."
"But if he wants to be fully cured, that'll still depend on his own research."
"I see."
...
"Oh, right."
Fenris suddenly pulled out a chocolate box and handed it to Beast.
"This is the webbing I got on this trip. Can you make a device that can spin a cocoon?"
"A cocoon?"
Beast took the box, opened it, and glanced inside. After a brief pause, he answered with certainty.
"No problem. Come find me in two days and I'll have it ready."
"Good!"
Fenris nodded excitedly.
After leaving the treatment room, just as he was about to head back to his cabin, the Professor suddenly stopped him and handed him a card.
"What's this?"
Fenris blinked.
Was the Professor worried he might run off and planning to buy him off with money?
"I think very highly of Connors's research. The profits it may generate in the future could be enormous, and I believe you deserve a share of that."
Professor X smiled faintly.
"I know you're not short on money, but one thing is one thing."
"Then hang on to it for now. We can talk once there are actual profits."
Fenris waved it off. None of that meant much to him.
And with that, before the Professor could react, Fenris had already disappeared from the school grounds.
Once inside the barren mountain, the thick radiation all around him made his whole body relax. Letting out a long breath, he stretched lazily and pushed open the door to his cabin.
"Long time no see, Fenris."
A warm, gentle voice suddenly came from inside the dark room.
"Who's there?"
Fenris had never expected anyone to appear here. He immediately dropped into a defensive stance.
Snap!
After a crisp snap of fingers, a small yellow glow lit up inside the room.
"Oh, right. I forgot. You probably haven't met me yet."
"Care to talk?"
