Chapter 4 - Chapter 3: Where the Sea Refuses

The first light of dawn broke slowly across the horizon.

Akira stood at the edge of the shore, his chest rising and falling heavily, blood still clinging to his skin from wounds that had yet to close. In his arms, Lia lay weak and cold, her breathing shallow against him.

The ocean was right there.

Close. Familiar. Endless.

Home.

"This is where you belong," Akira muttered, his voice rough.

He didn't wait for her response.

Carefully—but firmly—he stepped forward and lowered her into the water.

For a moment… nothing happened.

The waves brushed against her skin, soft and quiet.

Then—

They pulled away.

Akira frowned.

Another wave came, stronger this time, rolling forward like it meant to claim her… only to retreat just as quickly. Not gently.

But forcefully.

Like rejection.

His grip tightened around her arm. "No…"

Again, the sea touched her—

And withdrew.

Cold realization sank into his bones.

This wasn't hesitation.

This was refusal.

Akira slowly lifted her back into his arms, his jaw tightening as he stared at the endless stretch of water.

"You've got to be kidding me…"

Lia didn't struggle.

She didn't even look surprised.

Her half-lidded eyes remained on the sea, distant… hollow.

"You see it too…" she whispered faintly.

Akira glanced down at her.

"The silence."

His brows furrowed. "What are you talking about?"

Her lips parted slightly, but whatever strength she had was fading fast. Her body trembled—not from the cold, but from something deeper. Something final.

"They cast me out…" she breathed.

Akira froze.

Cast out.

His gaze snapped back to the ocean.

Everything made sense in an instant.

Why she hadn't fought back.

Why she hadn't resisted when he carried her.

Why she had looked at him… not with fear—but acceptance.

She hadn't been trying to survive.

She had already given up.

"…Tch."

Akira clicked his tongue in frustration, running a hand through his hair before gripping her tighter.

"Damn it."

He turned away from the sea.

"Don't die on me now."

The forest felt different in the morning.

Too quiet.

Too exposed.

Akira moved swiftly despite his injuries, carrying Lia deeper into the trees, away from the shoreline. Each step sent sharp pain through his body, but he ignored it.

Pain was nothing new.

But this—this situation—

This was trouble.

Big trouble.

Azure and his hunters wouldn't stop.

Not after last night.

Not after he survived.

Akira's eyes darkened.

"They'll be tracking blood," he muttered.

"Mine… and yours."

Lia stirred weakly in his arms, her fingers barely gripping his shirt.

"You should've left me…" she whispered.

Akira didn't even look at her.

"Too late for that."

"I would have died."

"Yeah," he said flatly. "I noticed."

Her lips curved faintly, almost like a broken smile.

"…Then why?"

That question lingered.

Akira didn't answer immediately.

Because the truth was—

He didn't know.

Instead, he said, "Save your strength."

But inside, something uneasy shifted.

He stopped when he reached it.

Hidden behind thick vines and jagged stone was a narrow opening—barely visible unless you knew where to look.

A cave.

Old. Forgotten.

And forbidden.

Akira stared at it for a long second.

"…This is a bad idea."

His pack never came here.

Not without reason.

Something about this place felt… wrong.

Heavy.

Like it remembered things better left buried.

But right now?

It was the only place no one would think to search.

Akira stepped inside.

The air was damp and cool, the faint sound of dripping water echoing through the darkness. A small stream ran along the cave floor, shallow but steady.

Not the sea.

But not fully land either.

Perfect.

Akira lowered Lia carefully near the water's edge.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then—

She breathed.

Deeper this time.

Not much.

But enough.

Akira let out a quiet breath he didn't realize he was holding.

"…Good."

He leaned back against the stone wall, finally allowing the weight of everything to settle.

Blood.

Hunters.

An exiled mermaid.

Three days to the full moon.

His hand clenched.

"This just keeps getting better…"

Lia shifted slightly, her eyes opening just enough to look at him.

"You brought me… here?"

"Don't sound so surprised."

Her gaze softened, studying him in silence.

"You're strange," she murmured.

Akira scoffed. "You're one to talk."

A faint pause.

Then—

"The sea won't take me back," she said quietly.

"I figured."

"I cannot live there anymore…"

Akira closed his eyes briefly.

"Yeah."

"…And I cannot live here either."

That made him look at her.

For the first time, there was something clear in her expression.

Not fear.

Not sadness.

Certainty.

She was dying.

Not from wounds.

But from being rejected by her own world.

Akira exhaled slowly.

"…We'll figure something out."

Lia blinked at him, as if the words didn't make sense.

"Why?"

Akira held her gaze this time.

"No idea."

But he didn't look away.

A distant sound echoed through the forest outside.

Sharp.

Faint.

But unmistakable.

A horn.

Akira's expression hardened instantly.

"…They're closer than I thought."

Silence followed.

But not the empty kind.

The kind that pressed against his chest… heavy with everything he couldn't ignore anymore.

His pack.

If the hunters were already this close, it wouldn't take long before they found them. And when they did… they wouldn't stop at him.

They would burn everything.

Kill everyone.

Akira's jaw tightened.

"…Damn it."

Behind him, Lia shifted weakly, her breathing uneven but steady enough to remind him—

She was still alive.

Still his responsibility.

Something he hadn't asked for.

Something he couldn't just abandon.

His hand curled into a fist.

Three days.

That's all he had.

Three days before the full moon rose—and with it, the curse he barely held together. The one that didn't just change him…

But consumed him.

And now?

Now there was her.

An exile the sea had rejected.

A life that couldn't survive in water…

Or on land.

Akira let out a slow breath, dragging a hand down his face.

"This is insane…"

His thoughts clashed violently.

Take her to the pack?

Impossible. He would be putting everyone at risk.

Leave her here?

She would die.

Run?

With hunters tracking him—and a full moon coming—there was nowhere far enough.

For the first time in a long while…

Akira hesitated.

Not from fear.

But from weight.

Too many lives.

Too many consequences.

And not enough time.

Behind him, Lia's faint voice broke through.

"You should go…"

Akira didn't turn.

"You'll lose everything… if you stay."

Silence.

Long.

Heavy.

Then—

"…Too late."

His voice was low. Final.

Not anger.

Not frustration.

Just acceptance.

Akira stepped forward, stopping at the cave entrance, his eyes fixed on the waking forest.

On the war that was coming.

On the choice he had already made.

His pack.

His curse.

And now—

Her.

His eyes darkened slightly.

"…I'll protect all of it."

Even if it destroys me.

The wind shifted.

The forest answered with silence.

And somewhere behind him—

The sound of water echoed softly.
