Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: A Crack in the Darkness

Years passed.

Time moved forward, but for Ryan—

It meant nothing.

Days blended into nights. Missions replaced memories. Faces came and went, but none stayed long enough to matter.

The world around him changed.

He didn't.

Within the organization, he had become something more than just a skilled fighter.

He had become a symbol.

A shadow.

A name whispered in fear.

Night.

Cold.

Precise.

Unfeeling.

He carried out missions without hesitation. Targets disappeared. Threats were eliminated. Failures were… nonexistent.

That was his life.

That was all he knew.

Until one day—

Something changed.

It was a rare moment.

A break.

Not given out of kindness, but simply because there was no immediate task for him.

Ryan walked through the city, his black coat blending into the crowd. His presence was quiet, unnoticed, as if he didn't belong to the world around him.

People laughed.

Children played.

Merchants shouted.

It all felt distant.

Unreal.

He kept walking.

Until—

He heard it.

Soft.

Broken.

Crying.

His gaze shifted slightly.

A small girl sat near a tree in the park, her face buried in her hands as quiet sobs escaped her.

Ryan looked at her for a moment.

Then looked away.

It didn't concern him.

He walked past.

But as he continued—

He stopped.

Not because of the girl.

But because of something else.

A woman approached her.

Ryan's eyes narrowed slightly as he watched from a distance.

"What's wrong?" the woman asked gently.

The girl sniffled, pointing upward.

"My… my cat…" she said between tears.

Ryan followed her gaze.

A small cat was stuck high up in the tree, clinging desperately to a branch, too scared to move.

"It climbed up… but it can't come down…" the girl cried.

The woman smiled softly.

"Alright," she said. "But you have to promise me something."

The girl looked up.

"What…?"

"No more crying," the woman said.

"For now, just trust me."

The girl hesitated.

Then nodded.

"I promise…"

Without another word—

The woman stepped toward the tree.

Ryan watched.

Curious.

She wasn't a warrior.

He could tell instantly.

No training.

No strength.

No skill.

Yet—

She grabbed a branch and began to climb.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Struggling.

Her movements were clumsy, uncertain. More than once, her foot slipped slightly, but she kept going.

Higher.

And higher.

Ryan frowned slightly.

"This is inefficient," he thought.

She wouldn't make it.

Even if she did—

The cat might panic and fall.

It wasn't logical.

She reached out—

Almost there.

But not enough.

Her fingers brushed against the cat—

And missed.

Her balance broke.

For a split second—

Everything froze.

Then—

She fell.

She hit the ground hard.

A dull sound echoed through the park.

The girl gasped.

Ryan's eyes narrowed slightly.

The woman winced, clearly in pain.

Her body trembled as she tried to sit up.

For a moment—

It looked like she would stop.

Give up.

But then—

She stood.

Slowly.

Unsteadily.

And looked back at the tree.

Ryan's gaze sharpened.

"…She's going again?"

Without hesitation—

She stepped forward.

Ready to climb again.

That's when Ryan moved.

In a single motion—

He disappeared.

And reappeared near the tree.

Before anyone could react—

He leaped.

His movement was silent, fluid, almost unnatural. He landed lightly on a branch, reached out—

And grabbed the cat.

The entire action took seconds.

He dropped back down just as effortlessly and placed the cat gently into the girl's arms.

"There," he said.

His voice was calm.

Empty.

The girl's eyes lit up instantly.

"Thank you!" she said, hugging the cat tightly.

She turned to the woman.

"Thank you too!"

The woman smiled softly, despite the pain she was clearly still feeling.

Ryan turned to leave.

But—

He stopped.

Something felt… off.

He looked back.

At the woman.

"Why?" he asked.

She blinked.

"Hmm?"

"Why would you do all that… for a stranger?"

His tone wasn't curious.

It was questioning.

As if trying to understand something that didn't make sense.

The woman tilted her head slightly.

Then smiled.

"A stranger?" she repeated softly.

She looked at the girl, who was now happily playing with her cat.

Then back at Ryan.

"Kindness doesn't need a reason," she said.

Ryan didn't respond.

So she continued.

"If you see someone in pain and you can help… then you help."

"It's that simple."

Ryan's eyes narrowed slightly.

Simple?

There was nothing simple about anything.

"Even if you fail?" he asked.

"Even if it hurts you?"

She laughed softly.

"Yes."

"Because what matters… isn't whether you succeed."

"It's that you tried."

Ryan said nothing.

But her words—

Stayed.

Echoing quietly in his mind.

As he walked away, something felt different.

Unfamiliar.

Uncomfortable.

For the first time in years—

He thought about his actions.

The lives he had taken.

The missions he had completed.

The people he had never once hesitated to eliminate.

None of it aligned with what she said.

Not even close.

"Kindness doesn't need a reason…"

The words repeated in his head.

Over.

And over.

And over again.

Later that day—

A carriage stopped near the park.

The woman stepped inside.

Before the door closed, she glanced back.

At Ryan.

Their eyes met for a brief moment.

And she smiled.

"Not everything has to be dark," she said.

Then the door shut.

And she was gone.

That night—

Ryan returned to the base.

The underground halls felt colder than usual.

Darker.

He walked straight to the command room.

"I want a different assignment," he said.

The boss looked at him.

Surprised.

"Something… less intense," Ryan added.

The room fell silent.

Then—

The boss laughed.

"Less intense?" he repeated.

"You?"

Ryan didn't respond.

The laughter stopped.

The boss leaned forward slightly.

"Too late," he said.

"I already have something for you."

Ryan's gaze didn't change.

"High priority," the boss continued.

"Failure is not an option."

The mission began immediately.

Ryan moved as he always did.

Silent.

Efficient.

Deadly.

But something was wrong.

His focus wasn't the same.

His thoughts drifted.

That woman's words—

Kept interfering.

He made small mistakes.

Nothing fatal.

But noticeable.

For the first time—

He wasn't perfect.

Yet—

He survived.

He always did.

When he returned—

The boss was waiting.

"Everything alright?" he asked.

Ryan paused.

"…Yes."

The answer came automatically.

Even though—

It wasn't entirely true.

The boss studied him for a moment.

Then nodded.

"Good."

He tossed a file onto the table.

"Your next mission."

Ryan picked it up.

Opened it.

And read.

His eyes narrowed slightly.

Target: The Princess of the Kingdom of Elaris.

The strongest kingdom in the East.

Xendor ruled the West.

Malvora dominated the South.

And the North—

Was a single empire.

United.

Unbroken.

But Elaris…

Was something else entirely.

A kingdom known for its unmatched military strength and strategic brilliance.

Capturing its princess—

Wasn't just difficult.

It was near impossible.

Ryan scanned the information quickly.

Routes.

Timings.

Guards.

Patterns.

Within moments—

He understood everything.

Because that was another thing about him.

He was smart.

Very smart.

"They'll take this route," he said calmly.

The boss smirked.

"I knew you'd figure it out."

Not long after—

Ryan moved.

Straight to the predicted location.

A narrow path between dense forest terrain.

Perfect for an ambush.

When he arrived—

He stopped.

His eyes scanned the area.

Then—

He smiled faintly.

For the first time in a long time.

"They're all here…"

Hidden.

Dozens of them.

Assassins.

Using magic to conceal their presence.

Invisible to normal eyes.

But not to him.

Ryan could see them all.

Every single one.

Even without magic—

He had his own abilities.

Special arts.

Heightened perception.

Unnatural awareness.

And that wasn't all.

The number of soldiers escorting the princess—

Was overwhelming.

Far more than expected.

"This won't be simple…" he thought.

Then—

Movement.

Subtle.

But clear.

One of the assassins was about to make a move.

Ryan's body tensed slightly.

His instincts sharpened.

The air grew heavier.

Silent.

Deadly.

Because in that moment—

Everyone had the same goal.

Capture the princess.

No matter what.

And as Ryan took a step forward—

Blades began to move in the shadows.

Magic started to gather.

Killing intent filled the air.

This wasn't a mission anymore.

It was a battlefield.

A deadly competition between elite killers.

And right at the center of it all—

The carriage doors slowly began to open.

Revealing… someone Ryan never expected to see. There the battle began
