Chapter 9 - Calm Before the Surge

Chapter 9: Calm Before the Surge

The rain deepened into a steady downpour as night fully claimed the city, and inside the broken building, the faint sound of water dripping blended with the distant echoes of the dead, creating a strange, suffocating calm that sat heavily in the air, yet within that calm, Lin Yu remained completely alert, his senses spread across every corner of the structure through the thin layer of water he had extended, turning the entire building into his temporary domain.

Su Yan had fallen asleep not long ago, her body finally giving in to exhaustion, her breathing soft and steady despite the harsh environment, and for the first time since they met, she looked less like someone running for her life and more like an ordinary girl, fragile and human, something that felt almost out of place in this ruined world.

Lin Yu glanced at her briefly before closing his eyes again, not to rest, but to focus.

Inside his mind, the vast ocean-like space returned, calm on the surface, endless in depth, but no longer chaotic like before, as if his control had stabilized the outer layers, yet beneath that calm surface, the same shadow lingered, unmoving, watching, waiting. It did not interfere, but its presence alone was enough to remind him that his power was not entirely his own.

Still, Lin Yu did not reject it.

Power was power.

And in this world, hesitation meant death.

His attention shifted outward again, merging with the water spread throughout the building. Every drop became an extension of his awareness, feeding him information continuously. The structure around him was fragile but stable enough for now, the outer streets mostly quiet except for scattered movements, nothing immediately threatening.

But then—

A ripple.

Faint.

But real.

Lin Yu's eyes opened instantly.

Something had entered his range.

Not one.

Multiple.

His expression remained calm, but his focus sharpened instantly as he tracked the movement through the water outside. Unlike normal zombies, these figures moved with purpose, not fast, but coordinated, spreading out slightly as they approached the building.

"They found us… already?" he thought, though he quickly corrected himself. "No… not found. Drawn."

His evolution.

The energy from the core.

Something about it had attracted them.

Lin Yu stood up silently, careful not to wake Su Yan immediately, his body moving without making a sound as the water around him gathered subtly, responding to his intent.

Outside, the figures came into clearer range.

Five of them.

Not as strong as the tallest one from before.

But far from weak.

Each carried that same unnatural steadiness, that same faint glow in their eyes.

A hunting group.

Lin Yu's gaze hardened slightly.

"They're adapting faster than I thought."

He could retreat.

He could escape through the back, avoid the fight entirely.

But his eyes shifted toward Su Yan.

She would not be able to keep up.

And even if she did—

They would be chased again.

Endlessly.

Running was not a solution.

Not anymore.

Lin Yu exhaled slowly.

"Then I deal with them here."

The decision was instant.

He raised his hand slightly, and the water spread throughout the building began to move, no longer passive, but preparing, gathering at key points, forming invisible traps and layers that blended seamlessly with the environment.

This time—

He would not fight like before.

This time—

He would control the battlefield.

The first of the creatures reached the entrance.

It paused.

Its head tilted slightly, as if sensing something unusual.

Then it stepped inside.

The moment its foot crossed the threshold—

Lin Yu moved.

Not physically.

But through the water.

The thin layer covering the floor condensed instantly beneath the creature's leg, locking it in place for a fraction of a second.

That was enough.

A nearly invisible blade swept across its neck.

Clean.

Silent.

The body dropped before it could even react.

The others froze.

Their eyes shifted.

Alert.

Searching.

Lin Yu remained completely still, hidden within the shadows of the building, his presence masked by the very water he controlled.

"They can sense danger… but not me," he realized.

Good.

The second creature moved cautiously now, stepping around the fallen body, its movements slower, more careful.

Too careful.

The moment it adjusted its position—

The wall beside it exploded inward as compressed water burst outward like a focused blast, slamming into its body and sending it crashing across the room.

Before it could rise—

Another strike followed.

This time from above.

A descending blade split its skull instantly.

Two down.

Three left.

The remaining creatures let out low, distorted sounds, their behavior changing as they spread out further, attempting to locate the source of the attacks.

But Lin Yu was already ahead of them.

Every movement they made was reflected in the water around them.

Every step—

Every shift—

Every intention—

Visible to him.

The third one rushed forward suddenly, choosing aggression over caution.

A mistake.

The ground beneath it softened instantly, the water layer turning unstable as its footing slipped.

In that instant—

Lin Yu struck again.

A precise internal collapse.

The creature dropped mid-motion, lifeless before it even hit the ground.

Three.

Only two remained now.

But this time—

They did not rush.

They stopped.

Completely.

Their glowing eyes turned in the same direction.

Toward Lin Yu.

For a brief moment—

Silence returned.

Then—

They moved together.

Fast.

Direct.

No hesitation.

Lin Yu's eyes narrowed slightly.

"They've found me."

So be it.

The water around him surged outward, no longer hidden, forming a visible field of swirling currents that filled the space between them.

If stealth no longer worked—

Then overwhelming force would.

The creatures charged into the field without slowing down, their bodies enduring the cutting currents as they pushed forward with brutal determination.

Lin Yu raised both hands.

His control reached its peak.

"Then stop."

The entire field compressed inward at once.

The pressure surged violently.

Water from every direction converged, crushing everything within its range.

For a brief moment—

Everything froze.

Then—

Both creatures collapsed simultaneously.

Silence.

Complete silence.

The water dispersed slowly.

Lin Yu lowered his arms, his breathing steady but slightly heavier than before.

Five mutated zombies.

All eliminated.

But this time—

No relief came.

Because as he extended his senses outward again—

He felt it.

More ripples.

More movement.

Far beyond.

And coming closer.

Lin Yu's expression remained calm.

But his thoughts sharpened.

"They're gathering."

Not randomly.

Not aimlessly.

But toward him.

Behind him, Su Yan stirred slightly, beginning to wake from the noise of the battle.

And outside—

In the endless rain—

The city itself seemed to shift.

As if something had issued a silent command.

And everything—

Was beginning to respond.
