Chapter 11: Breaking the Barrier
The stadium lights burned brighter as the announcer's voice echoed across the arena. "Top 32 battle—begin!"
Ashley stepped onto the field, calm and steady. Across from her stood a confident trainer, already analyzing her. The crowd buzzed with curiosity—her return had become one of the tournament's biggest talking points.
"Go, Arcanine!"
A massive fire-type Pokémon landed with force, flames flickering across its body.
Ben glanced at Ashley. "…Fast. Fire type."
"…I know."
She didn't hesitate.
"Your move."
Ben stepped forward.
The Ultimatrix pulsed.
FLASH.
Green light burst—
And in the next moment, a sleek, swift alien form appeared—lean, agile, built for speed.
XLR8.
The opponent blinked. "…What Pokémon is that?!"
Ashley didn't answer.
"Arcanine, Flamethrower!"
Flames roared forward.
XLR8 moved.
Or rather—
Disappeared.
The flames hit nothing.
A blur circled the field at impossible speed.
"Behind you," Ashley said calmly.
Before the opponent could react—
XLR8 struck.
A rapid, precise impact.
Arcanine staggered.
"Finish it."
Another strike.
Faster.
Stronger.
Arcanine collapsed.
"Arcanine is unable to battle!"
The crowd erupted.
"WHAT WAS THAT SPEED?!"
"She didn't even give him a chance!"
Ashley stood still.
No reaction.
Just focus.

The tension increased.
Stronger opponents.
Sharper strategies.
This time—
Her opponent smiled confidently.
"Let's see how far you've really come."
"Go, Alakazam!"
Psychic energy filled the field instantly.
Ben glanced at Ashley. "…That one feels dangerous."
"…It is."
Psychic types.
Fast.
Unpredictable.
"Alakazam, Psychic!"
Invisible force surged forward.
Ben reacted instantly.
FLASH.
He transformed again—
Diamondhead.
The psychic force slammed into him—
But he held.
Crystals anchored into the ground.
Ashley's voice cut through cleanly.
"Stabilize. Don't rush."
Ben grinned slightly. "Got it."
"Alakazam, teleport!"
The opponent smirked as Alakazam vanished—
Reappearing behind.
"Now—!"
But—
"Above you," Ashley said.
Diamondhead reacted instantly, launching crystal shards upward.
Alakazam barely dodged.
"…She predicted it!"
The opponent's confidence cracked slightly.
Ashley's eyes stayed locked.
"…Now."
Diamondhead slammed both hands forward.
Crystal spikes erupted across the battlefield, limiting movement, cutting off teleport angles.
Alakazam hesitated.
That was enough.
"Finish it."
A direct strike.
Clean.
Decisive.
Alakazam fell.
"Winner—Ashley!"
The crowd roared louder this time.
"She's reading everything!"
"She's completely different from before!"
Ben reverted back, breathing lightly. "…Okay, that one was actually fun."
Ashley didn't smile.
"…Next."

Now—
The atmosphere changed.
This was where she had always fallen.
Top 8.
The line she couldn't cross.
The place where everything used to end.
The crowd felt it too.
"Can she break through this time?"
"She always loses here…"
"Let's see if she can change it!"
Ashley stepped onto the field.
Her opponent was calm.
Experienced.
Strong.
"I've seen your past matches," he said. "You're good. But this is where you stop."
Ashley didn't react.
"…We'll see."
"Go, Tyranitar!"
A massive, armored Pokémon roared onto the field, its presence heavy, oppressive.
Ben glanced at it. "…That's big."
"…And strong."
The air felt heavier.
Pressure.
Real pressure.
The kind that used to break her.
Ashley's hand tightened slightly.
For just a moment—
The past tried to return.
Top 8.
Loss.
Failure.
Doubt—
"…Ashley."
Ben's voice.
Simple.
Grounding.
She exhaled.
Her eyes cleared.
"…We win."
Ben smiled.
"Yeah."
He stepped forward.
The Ultimatrix pulsed again.
FLASH.
This time—
A larger, more powerful form appeared.
Four Arms.
Massive.
Overwhelming strength.
Tyranitar roared.
"Stone Edge!"
Sharp rocks shot forward violently.
Four Arms didn't dodge.
He blocked.
Took the hit.
Stood firm.
"Your move," Ashley said.
Ben grinned.
"Gladly."
He charged.
The ground cracked under each step.
Tyranitar met him head-on.
A clash of raw power.
The impact shook the field.
The crowd gasped.
"They're matching strength?!"
Ashley's eyes tracked everything.
"…Left side weak."
Ben adjusted instantly.
A punch—
Clean.
Precise.
Tyranitar staggered.
"Now—finish it."
Four Arms roared—
And delivered a full-force strike.
Tyranitar fell.
Silence.
Then—
"TYRANITAR IS UNABLE TO BATTLE! WINNER—ASHLEY!"
For a second—
Ashley didn't move.
Top 8.
She had crossed it.
Finally.
The barrier that held her for eight years—
Broken.
The crowd exploded.
"SHE DID IT!"
"She passed Top 8!"
"This is her year!"
Ben reverted back, looking at her.
"…Told you."
Ashley stood still.
Then slowly—
A faint smile appeared.
Not forced.
Not fragile.
Real.
"…Yes."
She looked ahead.
Top 4.
Closer than ever.
And this time—
She wasn't stopping.
