Chapter 8 - The trial of minds

The Citadel was quieter than it had been since the competition began.

Only one hundred contestants remained.

The strongest.

The smartest.

Or the luckiest.

They were escorted one by one through the towering halls of the fortress toward the Hall of Judgment — a chamber where the next trial would take place.

No weapons.

No fighting.

Only conversation.

Most of them were far more afraid of this trial than the others.

Because anyone could swing a sword.

But speaking to Queen Nythera Valerys… was something else entirely.

---

High above the chamber stood Nythera's throne.

Today she had chosen a different seat.

A long black table stood in the center of the hall instead of the throne platform.

One chair on each side.

A test.

A discussion.

A judgment.

Nythera sat calmly at the table.

Her silver-black hair fell freely over her shoulders today, catching the pale starlight that filtered through the massive windows behind her.

Her beauty was not something she needed to display.

It simply existed.

Dangerous and effortless.

Vaelis stood nearby.

"The first contestant is ready."

Nythera nodded.

"Send him in."

---

Contestant 1 – Kael Varyn

The massive warrior entered confidently.

He sat across from Nythera with little hesitation.

Nythera studied him for a moment.

"You enjoy violence," she said.

Kael grinned.

"It's honest."

Nythera leaned back slightly.

"If you became king of this empire, how would you rule a thousand star systems?"

Kael shrugged.

"Simple."

He cracked his knuckles.

"Anyone who rebels dies."

Nythera tilted her head.

"And if they all rebel?"

Kael paused.

Then shrugged again.

"Then I'll have a lot of killing to do."

Silence filled the room.

Nythera smiled faintly.

"You would make an excellent warlord."

Kael looked proud.

"But a terrible king."

The doors opened behind him.

His trial was over.

---

Contestant 2 – Darius Sol

The prince entered with perfect composure.

He bowed slightly.

Nythera studied him.

"You were born to rule."

"Yes," Darius said calmly.

"And what is the purpose of power?" Nythera asked.

"To create order."

"And if order requires cruelty?"

Darius didn't hesitate.

"Then cruelty becomes necessary."

Nythera watched him carefully.

"You sound very confident."

"I was raised for leadership."

Nythera leaned forward slightly.

"But leadership is not inheritance."

Darius held her gaze.

"No," he said quietly.

"It is responsibility."

Nythera considered him for a moment.

Then nodded slightly.

"Better."

---

Contestant 3 – Soren Vale

Soren sat carefully in the chair across from her.

Nythera folded her hands.

"If two star systems go to war, and both believe they are right… what does a king do?"

Soren answered without emotion.

"Whichever side benefits the empire survives."

Nythera raised an eyebrow.

"Even if they are morally wrong?"

Soren shrugged slightly.

"Morality is flexible. Stability is not."

Nythera's lips curved slightly.

"Practical."

But her eyes flicked briefly toward Vaelis.

Still not what she was looking for.

---

Contestant 4 – Rowan Thorne

Rowan sat quietly across from her.

Nythera asked,

"What makes a ruler dangerous?"

Rowan thought for a moment.

Then answered simply.

"One who believes he is always right."

Nythera leaned forward.

"And what makes a ruler powerful?"

Rowan met her eyes.

"One who knows when he is wrong."

Nythera smiled slightly.

"Interesting."

---

Hours passed.

One by one the contestants entered.

Some were arrogant.

Some were clever.

Some were terrified.

But none of them truly impressed her.

Until the final name was called.

---

Aurelion

The doors opened quietly.

Aurelion entered the chamber.

He walked with the same calm confidence as always.

No fear.

No nervousness.

Just curiosity.

Nythera watched him carefully as he sat down across from her.

The room fell silent.

Vaelis quietly stepped farther back.

Something about this conversation felt… different.

Nythera rested her hands on the table.

"So," she said.

"The mysterious contestant."

Aurelion smiled faintly.

"And the famous Queen."

They studied each other for a moment.

Then Nythera asked her first question.

"If two civilizations fight for survival… and only one can remain… what does a ruler do?"

Aurelion answered instantly.

"He prevents the war before it begins."

Nythera's eyes narrowed slightly.

"And if it's already too late?"

"Then he chooses the side that will build something better after the war."

Nythera leaned back.

"Interesting answer."

Aurelion shrugged.

"Empires die from stupidity faster than from enemies."

Nythera smiled slightly.

Then she asked the second question.

"What is the greatest weakness of a ruler?"

Aurelion looked at her for a moment before answering.

"Loneliness."

Nythera's expression changed slightly.

"Explain."

"A ruler who stands above everyone eventually stops understanding them."

He leaned slightly forward.

"And once that happens…"

His eyes held hers.

"…their empire begins to decay."

The room fell completely silent.

Even Vaelis looked surprised.

Nythera studied him very carefully now.

Then she asked the final question.

"Why do you want to become my king?"

Aurelion smiled faintly.

"I never said I did."

Nythera's eyes flashed slightly.

"Then why are you here?"

Aurelion leaned back calmly in his chair.

"For the same reason you started this competition."

Nythera frowned.

"Which is?"

He smiled slightly.

"Curiosity."

Silence filled the room again.

Then Nythera slowly began to smile.

A real smile.

"You know," she said softly,

"you're the only contestant who hasn't tried to impress me."

Aurelion shrugged.

"I didn't think it was necessary."

Nythera laughed quietly.

Then she stood.

The trial was over.

"All contestants will be evaluated," she announced.

"But one thing is already clear."

Her crimson eyes rested on Aurelion.

"For the first time in centuries…"

She paused.

"…I'm not bored."

Aurelion stood as well.

Their eyes met again.

And for the briefest moment…

It didn't feel like a queen speaking to a contestant.

It felt like two ancient beings studying each other.

Trying to understand what the other really was.
