I closed the door the moment I stepped into my room, and I did not just shut it, I pressed it firmly until I heard the soft click that told me it was properly in place. My hand stayed there for a second longer than necessary, like I needed that small assurance.
My heart was racing. I lifted my hand slowly and pressed it against my chest, feeling the steady, fast rhythm beneath my palm.
"Stop," I whispered under my breath, almost like I was speaking directly to it. "Just… stop."
I let out a slow breath, but it did not help as much as I wanted it to. Because the truth was, it was not just my heart reacting, it was everything, tway he had looked at me, the way he had stood there waiting for me without saying a word.
I shook my head quickly, like I could push the thoughts away if I moved fast enough.
"No," I murmured again, this time firmer. "I cannot start falling for Santo."
