He smiled a little, shaking his head. "It means," he said, "if you want marriage, I am not running away from it."
I sat up slightly, adjusting myself so I could see his face better.
"Wait," I said slowly. "Are you serious?"
He looked at me like the answer was obvious.
"Yes," he said simply.
I stared at him for a moment, trying to read him properly, because part of me still expected him to laugh it off or change the topic or make another joke. But he did not, instead, he looked calm and sure.
"You are not joking?" I asked again, softer this time.
He shook his head. "I am not joking," he said. "But I will still do it properly. If I am going to marry you, I am going to ask for your hand the right way."
I looked down for a second, then back at him.
"You mean like… talking to my brother about us?" I asked.
He nodded. "Yes," he said.
I pushed myself up from his chest and stared at him properly, my eyes wide.
