Chapter 1 - The Substitute Bride

The rain poured heavily against the glass, blurring the city lights into streaks of cold gold and silver.

Lynn Carter stood by the window, her fingers slowly tightening around the fabric of her dress.

Behind her, the atmosphere in the room was suffocating.

"Say something."

Her mother's voice was sharp, impatient, cutting through the silence without mercy.

Lynn didn't turn around.

Her gaze remained fixed on the rain outside.

"What do you want me to say?" she asked quietly.

"That you agree," her father replied immediately, his tone firm and unquestionable. "The Gu family has already confirmed everything. The wedding will take place as planned."

Lynn let out a faint breath.

"So my opinion doesn't matter?"

Her mother frowned. "Don't make this difficult. Your sister cannot go through with the marriage. You are the only one who can take her place."

Take her place.

The words settled heavily in the air.

Lynn almost laughed.

Not daughter.

Not family.

Just a substitute.

"The man you want me to marry…" she said slowly, finally turning around, "is Ethan Gu."

Her father's expression hardened. "Yes."

The name alone carried weight.

Ethan Gu.

A man known throughout the city.

Cold. Ruthless. Untouchable.

A CEO who never allowed emotions to interfere with his decisions.

A man who always got what he wanted.

"You should feel lucky," her mother added. "Do you know how many women would do anything for this opportunity?"

Lynn looked at them.

Really looked.

For the first time, she saw clearly—

There was no hesitation.

No guilt.

No hesitation in sacrificing her.

"Then let them marry him," she said calmly.

The room froze.

Her father slammed his hand onto the table.

"Enough!"

His voice echoed loudly.

"The decision has already been made. You will go in your sister's place. This is not a discussion."

Lynn's fingers tightened slightly.

She had expected this.

Deep down, she had always known—

In this family, she was never the one who mattered.

"…Fine."

The word came out softly.

Not because she agreed.

But because she understood.

Fighting would change nothing.

Three days later.

The Gu residence stood under the dark sky, illuminated by distant lights.

Elegant.

Silent.

Untouchable.

Like a fortress no one dared to approach.

Lynn stepped out of the car, her heels touching the ground with a soft sound.

Her white dress brushed lightly against the floor as she walked forward.

The air felt heavier here.

As if even breathing required permission.

"Miss Carter, this way."

A servant led her through the massive doors.

The moment she stepped inside—

She felt it.

A presence.

Cold.

Dominant.

Watching.

Her gaze lifted slowly.

And then she saw him.

Ethan Gu.

Standing in the center of the vast hall.

Tall.

Composed.

Unreachable.

He didn't move.

Didn't greet her.

Didn't even pretend to.

His dark eyes swept over her slowly, as if evaluating something unimportant.

"You're not her."

It wasn't a question.

Lynn felt her heartbeat pause for just a second.

But she didn't look away.

"No," she said calmly. "I'm not."

The air between them grew heavier.

Then—

He started walking toward her.

Each step slow.

Measured.

Controlled.

When he stopped in front of her, Lynn could feel it—

The pressure.

The quiet dominance that surrounded him.

"You replaced your sister," he said.

"I was sent," Lynn replied.

A faint change crossed his expression.

Subtle.

Almost invisible.

Then he spoke again.

"It doesn't matter."

His voice was low.

Indifferent.

"To me, you're all the same."

For a brief moment—

Something in Lynn's chest tightened.

But she didn't show it.

Instead, she lifted her chin slightly.

"No."

Ethan's eyes narrowed.

"No?" he repeated.

"I'm not the same."

Her voice wasn't loud.

But it was steady.

Firm.

And that—

caught his attention.

For the first time, his gaze lingered.

Not as a formality.

Not as an obligation.

But with real interest.

Silence filled the space between them.

Different this time.

Then Ethan let out a quiet, cold laugh.

"Interesting."

He stepped back slightly, his eyes still fixed on her.

"Let's make one thing clear."

His tone sharpened.

"This marriage is a contract."

"No emotions."

"No expectations."

"You will not interfere in my life."

"And I will not interfere in yours."

Lynn listened carefully.

Each word was like a line being drawn.

Clear.

Cold.

Final.

"Do you understand?" he asked.

She nodded.

"I do."

Ethan studied her for a moment longer.

As if trying to figure something out.

But Lynn didn't move.

Didn't hesitate.

Didn't lower her gaze.

Finally, he turned away.

"Good."

Then he added, almost casually—

"Don't disappoint me."

Lynn stood still, watching his back as he walked away.

Her fingers slowly relaxed.

Her breathing steadied.

This place…

This man…

This marriage…

None of it was what she wanted.

But something inside her shifted.

Quietly.

Dangerously.

Because for the first time—

She realized something.

She didn't want to run.

She didn't want to disappear.

Not anymore.

If she had to stay here—

Then she would stay on her own terms.

Not as a replacement.

Not as an obligation.

But as something else.

Something unexpected.

Something he would never be able to ignore.

And somewhere deep inside—

A thought formed.

Clear.

Certain.

This contract marriage….

would not remain just a contract.

It would change everything.

And this—

was only the beginning.
