Anwar Sadat had not slept.

Not because he was incapable of sleep in a crisis — he had slept through harder nights than this, had learned years ago that a leader who could not rest was a leader who would make bad decisions when bad decisions were most costly. No. Sadat had not slept because he had been thinking, and the thinking required wakefulness.

The ground operation had succeeded beyond any public expectation. The Suez Canal had been crossed. The Bar-Lev Line — which Israeli generals had called the most impregnable defensive fortification since the Maginot Line, and which Moshe Dayan had at one point suggested would cost any attacking force twenty thousand dead — had been breached in less than three hours. Egyptian infantry, Egyptian engineers, Egyptian armour were on the eastern bank of the canal in strength. The army that had been humiliated in 1967 had crossed the same water that had once marked the outer boundary of Israeli military confidence, and it had done so with coordination and discipline and tactical competence that the whole world was now reading about.

That part was true. That part was real. He wanted to be precise about that.

And yet.

He picked up the air intelligence summary from October 9th. Read the line again.

Egyptian Air Force effective sortie rate reduced by sixty-eight percent from Day 1 baseline. Operations consolidated to defensive patrols and close air support within SA-6 coverage. Zero losses.

He had been a pilot himself — had flown since before the 1948 war, had understood combat aviation at the level of the man strapping into the aircraft rather than the man reviewing the summary. Kamal withdrew. That thought sat with him in a way he could not entirely dismiss.

He finished his coffee. Straightened his uniform. Collected the summaries in careful order — ground forces first, because that was the war Egypt was fighting and winning.

He walked out to meet his Foreign Minister.

Hafez al-Assad had been in continuous meetings since 04:00.

Not because the situation required the meetings — he understood the situation with complete clarity and additional meetings would not change his understanding — but because the generals needed to brief, and the generals needed to be heard, and being heard was the thing that kept military men functional in moments of institutional failure. You let them speak. You absorbed their reports. You asked precise questions that made clear you had listened. And then you made your decisions without confusion about what the facts were.

The facts were not in dispute.

The Syrian Army's armoured offensive had crossed the 1967 ceasefire line, had advanced, had taken ground, had — in the first twenty-four hours — moved closer to the Jordan Valley than any Syrian force since independence. The infantry had fought well. The tank crews had fought well. The generals had executed the plan they had spent months designing.

The plan had not been wrong. The plan had been reasonable. The plan had been based on available intelligence about what Syria and Egypt would face — and what they would face had included the S-27 Pinaka, whose existence was known, whose capabilities had been studied, whose performance envelope had been incorporated into operational planning at every level.

Assad dismissed the last of the generals at 08:00. The room was quiet in the particular way of rooms that have contained a great deal of noise and now contain its absence.

He poured water. Stood at the window. Looked at Damascus in the morning light — the city that had been this country's heart since before recorded history, the city that had sent its sons to this war with the belief that the aircraft disadvantage could be managed. Could be planned around. Could be neutralised.

His Defence Minister, Mustafa Tlas, sat at the table behind him in the specific silence of a man who has said everything he has to say and is waiting.

"Tell me the honest number," Assad said. Not turning from the window.

"Eleven hundred and thirty Syrian aircraft sorties in four days," Tlas said. "One hundred and twelve aircraft lost. Forty-one pilots killed. Twenty-eight wounded. Thirty-one missing."

"One hundred and twelve," Assad said.

"Against zero Israeli aircraft lost in air-to-air combat."

Assad turned from the window. He looked at Tlas. Tlas, who had been his Defence Minister since the '70 coup, who had fought with him and differed with him and occasionally been wrong with him and occasionally been right with him. Tlas looked tired. He looked like a man who had been counting things he did not want to count.

"Zero," Assad said.

"Zero."

Assad sat down. The room was very quiet.

"I want to understand something," he said. "Not for the briefing. Not for the report to Moscow. For myself." He looked at Tlas directly. "We knew about this aircraft. We received the Pakistani reports in May. We spent five months designing our air campaign around what the Pakistani reports described. The reports were accurate about the aircraft they faced. We planned correctly for what the reports described." He paused. "So why do we have one hundred and twelve aircraft down against zero?"

"Because the aircraft they described was not the aircraft we faced," Tlas said. "The Israelis are flying a 1973 variant. The Pakistanis faced a 1971 variant. The gap between them is approximately twenty kilometres of engagement range and improved countermeasure resistance. We planned for fifty kilometres. We faced seventy."

Assad was quiet for a moment.

"Twenty kilometres," he said.

"Twenty kilometres decided the air war," Tlas said. It was not an excuse. It was an accountant's statement about where the numbers had gone wrong.

Assad thought about his pilots. About Colonel al-Aziz's briefing, delivered the previous day with the specific composure of a professional reporting facts that reflected badly on decisions he had participated in and was not attempting to evade. Al-Aziz had been good. Had been honest in a way that required a particular kind of courage — not the courage of the cockpit, which was physical and immediate, but the courage of the briefing room, which required a man to stand in front of his commander and say I was wrong about this and here is exactly how I was wrong.

Assad respected that. It was rarer than physical courage.

"Moscow," he said.

"Marshal Zakharov's delegation arrives at 14:00," Tlas said. "General Shavrov with them — the head of the Soviet Air Force tactical analysis team."

"They will tell us the MiG-21 was inadequate," Assad said. "They will tell us the MiG-23 will address the gap. They will offer us more equipment."

"Yes."

"And they will be partially right and partially wrong." Assad looked at the ceiling. "The MiG-23 does not exist in Syrian service yet. In the next war — yes. In this war—" He stopped.

Tlas said nothing.

"In this war we have conceded the sky," Assad said. "And the ground war without the sky is—" He paused. "Manageable? Possibly. Decisive? I doubt it." He looked at Tlas. "Give me your honest assessment of the ground situation. Not the public position. The honest one."

Tlas hesitated for one second — the hesitation of a man deciding between diplomatic and accurate. He chose accurate.

"We have lost the initiative. The Israeli reserves are fully engaged in the north. Peled's division is on the Golan now. We pushed as far as our logistics would support on the first two days. We do not have the fuel, the ammunition, or the air cover to push further." He paused. "We inflicted significant Israeli casualties. We proved we could cross the ceasefire line. We did not achieve strategic depth in the Jordan Valley before Israeli reserves arrived. The original operational goal is not achievable without air support we cannot provide."

Assad absorbed this.

He had known it — had known it since October 8th, if he was being honest with himself, since the tactical picture on the Golan had clarified and the Syrian armour losses in the valley north of Kuneitra had started accumulating. Had known and had continued the war because stopping was its own kind of statement, because the ground still held, because Sadat's crossing operation in the south was succeeding and the combined pressure mattered.

But knowing and acknowledging were different things.

"The Indian," he said.

Tlas looked at him.

"The young man in Gorakhpur who built this aircraft," Assad said. "Shergill. Twenty-three years old."

"Yes."

"He sold to Israel." Assad's voice carried nothing particular when he said it — not anger, not bitterness. Just the flat acknowledgement of a fact. "India sold a weapon of this quality to our enemy. And then the weapon performed."

"Yes."

"I want you to know something," Assad said. "I'm not angry at India." He paused, as though testing the statement against his actual feelings and finding it accurate. "I'm angry at ourselves. We had eighteen months. We had the Pakistani reports. We had the intelligence. We had every reason to take the S-27 seriously at its maximum possible capability and plan for that. Instead—" He stopped. "Instead we planned for the version we knew about and assumed the version we would face was similar."

He stood.

"When Moscow arrives, be polite. Accept the equipment discussions. Begin the MiG-23 transition planning." He looked at Tlas. "And then tell our intelligence people that when India builds the next aircraft — and they will build the next aircraft — I want to know about it before it reaches a theatre."

"Yes, sir."

Assad walked to the door. Stopped.

"One hundred and twelve pilots," he said. Without turning. "I want their names on my desk tonight. Every one of them. And I want letters drafted to their families. I will sign each one personally."

He left.

Tlas sat alone in the room for a long moment.

Then he picked up his pen and began writing.

Amman, Jordan — Royal Palace 10 October 1973 — 09:15 Hours

King Hussein bin Talal had made the most difficult telephone call of his life at 06:00 this morning.

He had called Sadat directly. Had told the Egyptian president what he had already decided — Jordan would not open a full eastern front. Would not send the Jordanian Army across the Jordan River and into the West Bank in force. Would maintain a defensive posture. Would provide what indirect support was possible while not committing to the full offensive engagement that Egypt and Syria had hoped for.

Sadat had been gracious about it. Professionally gracious — the graciousness of a statesman accepting information he had half-expected, adjusting his calculations without visible emotion, thanking Hussein for his candour.

That graciousness had made it worse, somehow.

Hussein set the phone down at 06:15 and sat in his study for a long time in the particular silence of a man who has made a necessary decision and knows it was necessary and cannot entirely escape the weight of it.

He was thirty-seven years old. He had been king since 1952. Had watched his grandfather Abdullah assassinated by a Palestinian nationalist in 1951. Had survived five serious assassination attempts in his own reign. Had led Jordan through 1967 and its aftermath — the loss of the West Bank, the refugee crisis, the Black September conflict with the PLO in 1970 that had cost enormous blood on both sides. That understanding was why he had not committed Jordan.

He called his Air Force commander, Brigadier General Ihsan Shurdom, at 06:30.

"Give me an honest picture," Hussein said. "If we entered this war fully — if I committed the armoured corps and opened the Jordan River crossings — what does our air situation look like?"

Shurdom had been expecting this question. Had prepared for it. He was a professional's professional — trained partly in Britain, the kind of officer Jordan's military had always tried to produce, technically excellent and politically aware without the political awareness corrupting the technical honesty.

"Your Majesty," Shurdom said, "our Hawker Hunters are good aircraft. Our pilots are good pilots. Against Egyptian and Syrian air forces we would be competitive. Against Israeli air defence systems of the kind normally employed—" He paused. "Manageable with difficulty and significant losses."

"Against the S-27s," Hussein said.

A silence.

"Against the S-27s," Shurdom said, "our Hunters would be within the engagement radius before we could respond effectively. The missile range alone—" Another pause. "Your Majesty, I have studied the reports from the past four days. Syria has lost one hundred and twelve aircraft against zero Israeli losses in air-to-air combat. Syria's MiG-21s are a full generation ahead of our Hunters. I cannot give you a different number than that for what our losses would look like."

Hussein was quiet for a long time.

"Thank you for your honesty," he said.

He hung up and sat with that number. Syria — MiG-21s, fully modernised, Soviet-trained pilots — had lost one hundred and twelve aircraft against zero in four days.

Jordan had Hawker Hunters. British jets from the 1950s that were flown superbly but were flown against a threat they had not been designed to meet, in an engagement geometry where their pilots would be dying before they understood what was engaging them.

Hussein had loved flying his whole life. Flew himself whenever possible. Understood what it meant to be in a cockpit and to trust your aircraft. He could not — would not — send Jordanian pilots into an engagement where they would die not because they flew badly but because the aircraft available to them was fundamentally outmatched by the engagement geometry.

That was not a decision he could live with.

He walked to the window that looked east toward the Jordan Valley.

The West Bank was out there. Had been out there since 1967 — the land that had been Jordan's, that was now under Israeli administration, that hundreds of thousands of Palestinians called home and could not return to. He wanted it back. Had always wanted it back. Had never stopped working toward the political arrangements that might eventually achieve what military force alone could not.

But sending Jordanian Hunters into the range of S-27s and Astra missiles would not recover the West Bank. It would add Jordanian names to a casualty list that was already too long.

He had made the right decision. He was nearly certain of it.

But certainty and comfort were not the same thing, and he sat with the distinction for the rest of the morning.

Baghdad, Iraq — Ministry of Defence 10 October 1973 — 10:00 Hours

General Harden al-Tikriti was shouting.

This was not unusual — al-Tikriti shouted with some frequency and the people around him had learned to calibrate his shouts the way sailors calibrate weather, distinguishing between the routine squall and the serious storm. But today's shouting had a different quality. It was not the shouting of a man angry at a subordinate. It was the shouting of a man angry at a fact.

"Two squadrons," he said, for the third time in the past ten minutes. "We sent two squadrons to Egypt in August. Forty-eight MiG-21s. Forty-eight aircraft and their pilots, some of our best trained, to stand in solidarity with Egypt and Syria and now—" He swept his hand across the briefing documents spread across the conference table. "Now I'm reading this."

Brigadier Nizar al-Douri, the Ministry's senior air intelligence officer, sat on the other side of the table with the specific stillness of a man waiting for the shouting to find its natural end.

"Two of our aircraft have been lost," al-Douri said, when the silence gave him room. "Shot down over the Sinai on October 8th while flying with an Egyptian formation. The pilots—"

"I know about the pilots," al-Tikriti said. His voice had dropped. That was the serious storm. "Major Rashid Khalil and Lieutenant Ammar Saeed. Both dead. Both twenty-eight years old. Both flying correctly, according to every account I have received, executing exactly the procedures they were trained for." He sat down heavily. "And they're dead."

Al-Douri said nothing.

"I need to understand something," al-Tikriti said. "Not for the record. Not for Bakr. For me." He looked across the table with the eyes of a man who had spent twenty years in the Iraqi military and had not survived those twenty years by accepting comfortable explanations. "This Indian aircraft — how did we not account for this properly? We are not stupid men. The Pakistanis sent their reports in May. We read them. Every Arab air force read them. We all understood what this aircraft could do. And yet it has done something beyond what we understood in four days of sustained combat." He leaned forward. "Why?"

Al-Douri had spent considerable time on this question in the past forty-eight hours. Had spoken with Egyptian and Syrian intelligence counterparts. Had read every available signal intercept and pilot debrief.

"The version we planned against and the version Israel is flying are different," he said. He explained the eighteen-month development gap, the twenty additional kilometres of engagement range, the improved missile seekers, the fire control upgrades. He explained it carefully and precisely because al-Tikriti, whatever his reputation for volume, was an intelligent man who needed accurate information more than he needed his existing beliefs confirmed.

Al-Tikriti listened without interrupting. When al-Douri finished, there was a long silence.

"So the gap between what Pakistan described in 1971 and what Israel is flying in 1973," al-Tikriti said slowly, "is the gap between thinking you have a viable tactical counter and discovering you do not."

"Yes."

"Twenty kilometres."

"In engagement range. And improved countermeasure resistance. And fire control that handles multiple simultaneous threats."

Al-Tikriti looked at the ceiling. "An Indian boy in Gorakhpur built this."

"Karan Shergill, yes. Twenty-three years old. His company is—"

"I know how old he is," al-Tikriti said quietly. "I know because I asked when I first read the file in May." He shook his head. Not in disbelief. In something more complicated than disbelief. "India. We never — I never took India seriously as an aerospace power. We watched America, we watched the Soviets, we watched the French with the Mirage. We did not watch India." A pause. "That was a mistake."

"It was a mistake shared across every Arab air force," al-Douri said.

"That makes it a more expensive mistake, not a more forgivable one." Al-Tikriti stood. "How many Iraqi aircraft remain with the Egyptian formations?"

"Forty-six operational. Two lost."

"Pull them back," al-Tikriti said.

Al-Douri looked at him. This was not a minor decision. This was Iraq withdrawing from Arab solidarity in the middle of a war.

"General—"

"I said pull them back." Al-Tikriti's voice was even. Not shouting now. The specific quiet of a man who has calculated. "I am not sending more Iraqi pilots to die in an engagement geometry where death is a matter of range rather than skill. Major Khalil and Lieutenant Saeed were excellent pilots. They died because they were inside the S-27's engagement envelope and there was no tactical response available to them once that missile was in the air." He looked at al-Douri steadily. Al-Douri nodded and left.

Al-Tikriti sat alone with the briefing documents for a while.

He thought about Rashid Khalil. Had known him slightly — had presented him with a commendation eighteen months ago, a young major with excellent evaluations and a gift for the aggressive aerial gunnery that characterised Iraq's best pilots. Had shaken his hand. Had thought: good man, this one will go far.

He would not go anywhere now.

Al-Tikriti picked up his pen. Set it down. Picked it up again.

He began drafting the letter to Khalil's family. The letter was technically his aide's responsibility. He wrote it himself anyway.

Some things required the senior man to carry them.

King Faisal bin Abdulaziz was not a man who raised his voice.

He had never needed to. In four decades of political life in a kingdom he had helped shape from its modern foundations, Faisal had learned that quiet authority carried more weight than volume, and that a man who needed to shout to be heard had already revealed a weakness. His half-brother Saud had shouted. Saud was no longer king.

He sat at the head of the council table and listened as his Foreign Minister, Omar al-Saqqaf, finished the morning's briefing on the air situation. Listened with the stillness that was his signature mode — not passivity, but the active absorption of information by a man who would use it.

When al-Saqqaf finished, the room was quiet.

"The petroleum question," Faisal said. Not loudly. He never spoke loudly.

His Oil Minister, Ahmed Zaki Yamani, nodded. The petroleum question was what Faisal had been thinking about since the war began, and it was what the next three hours of this meeting would address. But the air situation required acknowledgment first.

"One hundred and nine Arab aircraft in four days," Faisal said. "Against an Indian design."

"Yes, Your Majesty."

Faisal's face carried nothing visible. He had a remarkable face for carrying nothing visible when he chose — the trained expressionlessness of a man who had negotiated with great powers and knew that his reactions were information.

But in the privacy of his thinking, which nobody in this room could read, he was doing something he rarely did.

He was reconsidering.

Specifically, he was reconsidering the expulsion of Indian workers from Saudi oil facilities in May, after the Israel sale announcement. He had supported that expulsion. Had agreed that India's decision to sell advanced military technology to Israel was an act of provocation that required a clear Arab response. "The oil embargo." It was not a question. It was the subject they had been circling since October 6th.

Yamani looked down the table at the assembled ministers. This was the decision that would define the war's economic dimension — whether the Arab oil-producing states would use petroleum as a weapon against the Western nations supplying Israel. It was a decision that had been discussed and delayed and discussed again, and the outcome of the air war made it both more urgent and more complicated.

"The case against," Faisal said.

We would be imposing petroleum costs on the West to influence a situation partially shaped by a country the West does not control." Yamani paused. "The effectiveness of the embargo as leverage against Israeli aircraft capability is—" He chose words carefully. "Indirect."

The room was quiet.

Faisal looked at Yamani for a long moment. "The embargo was never solely about the aircraft," he said. "The embargo is about the principle that Arab petroleum will not be used against Arab interests. That principle existed before the S-27, before this war, before India."

"Yes, Your Majesty."

"We proceed," Faisal said. "The embargo will be announced. The production cut will be implemented." He paused. "And separately, Yamani — I want a quiet conversation opened with Delhi. Not through the expulsion channel. A new channel. A quiet one."

Yamani raised an eyebrow. "About?"

"About the future," Faisal said. "India is now demonstrably an aerospace power of the first rank. That is a fact, whatever our feelings about the Israel transaction. Facts require adjustment." He looked at the table. "The petroleum expulsion last May was designed to signal consequence. The signal was received and ignored. A signal that is received and ignored has served its purpose. Now we think about what comes after the signal."

Al-Saqqaf, the Foreign Minister, was watching the king with the careful attention of a man trying to understand the direction of a current.

"You want to re-engage India," al-Saqqaf said.

"I want to not be permanently defined by a five-month-old expulsion that India absorbed without apparent difficulty," Faisal said. "At some point we will need aircraft. We will need modern aircraft to defend this kingdom. The Soviet inventory is available. The American inventory is conditionally available. The French inventory is available." He paused. "The Indian inventory is demonstrably superior to all of them in certain specific ways. What does it cost us to know whether it is available?"

Nobody in the room answered that.

Faisal stood, signalling the session's transition to the formal agenda.

"Proceed with the embargo," he said. "And open Delhi."

Tripoli, Libya — Office of the Revolutionary Command Council 10 October 1973 — 10:30 Hours

Colonel Muammar Gaddafi had been awake since three in the morning.

This was not unusual. Gaddafi kept irregular hours by nature and by ideology — he distrusted routine, distrusted the institutional patterns that turned men into officials, distrusted anything that resembled the comfortable predictability of the old order he had overthrown. He was thirty-one years old, had been Libya's de facto ruler since the 1969 coup, and approached the world with the specific intensity of a young man who had achieved enormous power very quickly and could not entirely decide what to do with the gap between his ambitions and his capabilities.

He activated his radar warning receiver at forty-two kilometres and immediately began the correct defensive procedure. His wingman was still hit. He survived by specific fortune of missile geometry — not by defensive capability. He did not have defensive capability at that engagement range with the aircraft he was flying."

Gaddafi was quiet for a long time.

Al-Haddad waited.

"The Indian aircraft," Gaddafi said finally. "An Indian aircraft did this."

"Yes, Colonel."

"India." Gaddafi said it as if testing the weight of the word. "We expelled their workers. Closed our operations to Indian labour. And their response was—"

"Their response was to continue the war with the weapons already sold," al-Haddad said. "The expulsion happened in May. The aircraft were already in Israel. They were already being flown."

"I know when it happened," Gaddafi snapped.

Another silence.

When he spoke again, his voice was quieter. The snap was gone, replaced by something more genuinely troubled.

"I have been thinking about this wrong," he said. More to himself than to al-Haddad. "All of us have been thinking about this wrong. We thought — I thought — that Arab solidarity meant that anyone who sold weapons to Israel was choosing a side and we could punish that choice." He stopped. "But Shergill didn't choose a side. He sold to whoever would pay for a weapon that performs. He's a manufacturer, not a diplomat. And the manufacturer's weapon just—" He stopped again.

"Yes, Colonel," al-Haddad said softly.

"Stay in Alexandria," Gaddafi said. "Don't commit our aircraft to operations. Wait for my instruction." He paused. "And al-Haddad — the pilots there. The Egyptian pilots who have been in combat. Talk to them. Listen to them. I want to understand what they experienced. Not the official report. The actual experience."

"I'll do that," al-Haddad said.

Gaddafi hung up.

He sat with the crumpled intelligence summary and the morning light coming through the window and the noise of Tripoli beginning its day outside.

"The S-27," he said.

"Yes."

"India sold it to Israel." Arafat's voice was even. He had long ago learned to keep the bitterness out of his voice when discussing facts, because bitterness was a luxury that men in his position could not afford. Bitterness obscured calculation, and calculation was what kept you alive and politically relevant. "India, which has Muslims. India, which claims the mantle of the non-aligned movement. India, which—"

"Which needed a buyer with hard currency for a weapon they had invested heavily in," Abu Iyad said. "The Indian government approved the sale over significant internal opposition. There were protests in Indian cities. The Gujarat and UP Muslim communities were vocal." He paused. "The decision was made by Indira Gandhi and she made it as a strategic and economic calculation, not as a statement about the Palestinian cause."

"I know why she made it," Arafat said. He sat back down. "I know. And I understand the calculation. But understanding a calculation and living with its consequences are different things."

The room was quiet.

"What does this mean for us?" Abu Iyad asked. He meant it as a genuine question, not a rhetorical one. He was asking: what is the path forward from here.

Arafat looked at the maps for a while.

"It means," he said slowly, "that the Arab states cannot recover the Palestinian territories through a war they cannot contest in the air. Not with the current equipment gap. "We will need to be at the table," Arafat said. "Whatever table emerges from this war. Whatever negotiations follow. We need to be there. Not represented by Jordan. Not represented by Egypt. Present." He paused. "That is the work."

He looked at the maps one more time.

"What is the work," he said, more to himself than to Abu Iyad, "when the sky doesn't belong to you."

Cairo, Egypt — Air Force Headquarters 10 October 1973 — 15:00 Hours

Lieutenant Mohamed Atef was twenty-four years old.

He had survived four days of combat flying MiG-21s. Had flown nine sorties. Had been engaged by S-27 aircraft on three of them. Had expended countermeasures on all three, had broken hard on all three, had watched his wingmen on two of those three sorties fail to come back.

Not empty — the third shift had maintenance crews in, and the night-time work of keeping precision machinery calibrated never entirely stopped. Karan had been in his office since early morning, reading reports, taking calls, doing the ordinary work that did not stop because a war was happening somewhere else in which his company's product was performing.

Had read Netra's engagement logs with the attention of someone looking for what the combat had revealed about the system's boundaries — not its strengths, which were performing as expected, but its edges, the places where the system had worked harder than normal or had produced outcomes slightly different from test predictions.

The combat logs from Ramat David would be, as Rathore had said, more valuable than anything the test programme could generate. Seventy-eight combat sorties across seventeen days in an actively contested environment, against well-trained adversaries flying modern Soviet aircraft with current tactical doctrine. Every engagement was a data point that the controlled testing programme had spent two years trying to simulate.

He sat back in his chair.

Outside, Gorakhpur in October — the evenings cooling, the last of the harvest smell in the air, the city settled into the nighttime sounds he had grown up with. The S-35 programme — the medium multirole aircraft that the IAF had been pushing for, that the entire doctrine discussion of June and July had been building toward. The aircraft that was supposed to be what the S-27 never was: a platform designed from the beginning for the ground support and close air role, optimised for the fight over a battlefield rather than the fight in the upper air.

The S-27 had won the air war. The question for the next war, and the war after that, was what happened on the ground when air superiority was established and maintained.

That was the S-35's purpose.
