Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: The First Adventure

The morning light in Ceil felt almost peaceful. Saint woke early and met the others in the common room of the Rusty Anchor. Bowls of bread and glowing fruit sat on the table. Sheriff stood by the window red eye scanning the street outside. Shed sharpened his bone knife on a stone his tail flicking with restless energy.

Saint sat down and grabbed a piece of bread. He took a bite and looked at his friends. So what now. We cannot just hide in this inn forever. Mark is still out there looking for me. We need to do something.

Sheriff turned from the window. You are right kid. Ceil is safe for now but we cannot sit still. I heard more whispers last night. There is a small floating ruin just outside town. Old Zach Clan lookout post. If we hit it quiet we might find maps or messages about the Director. Information we can use.

Saint paused mid bite. What is the Zach Clan. You guys have been saying it since we got here. I do not know what it is.

Sheriff tilted his head red eye flickering. Right. You are new to Veyra kid. The Zach Clan is a cult. Human and reptile mix mostly. They worship the Director like he is a god. Burn villages that hide portal arrivals. Round up people for his labs. They think the Director is building a new order across the dimensions. Ruthless. Organized. And growing fast.

Shed nodded and sheathed his knife. Yeah Saint. They kicked me out of my clan for being weak but the Zach Clan is worse. They hunt exiles like me. They say the Director will remake the weak into something stronger. I have seen their fires from afar. Villages gone in one night. We stay clear unless we are the ones hitting first.

Saint swallowed hard but felt a spark of excitement mix with the fear. A cult that works for the Director. The same guy who sent that hologram. Okay. I get it now. So we hit their lookout post. Take what we need and get out. I am in. After everything we have been through I do not want to just wait for Mark to find us. Let us do it.

Sheriff checked the cylinder of his revolver. Good. We go in fast take what we need and get out before any real trouble shows up. Saint you stay behind me. Shed you flank left. No hero stuff. We watch each others backs.

Shed hissed a quiet laugh. Sounds like our first real adventure. I am in. We balance each other. Weak reptile strong robot and the new kid from Earth. We got this.

They finished breakfast quickly and slipped out of the inn. The streets of Ceil were waking up with merchants opening stalls and people moving about their day. No one paid the trio much attention as they headed toward the edge of town. Sheriff led the way his heavy boots thudding softly on the dirt path. Shed stayed close to Saint yellow eyes alert. The forest from the night before gave way to open fields dotted with floating rock formations that hovered like broken islands in the sky. The air smelled of sweet rot and distant smoke. Gravity shifted lightly making every step feel a little lighter.

As they walked Sheriff spoke low. Stay sharp kid. This is our first time moving together like this. The Zach Clan scouts will not be as sloppy as the ones in the dungeon. They train for this. If it gets bad we run. No questions.

Saint nodded gripping a loose metal rod he had picked up along the way. I remember the dungeon. I almost died there. But with you two I feel like I can actually do this. What exactly are we looking for in the lookout post.

Shed kept his voice low. Maps. Holographic messages. Anything with coordinates or notes on portal activity. The clan moves fast. If we get lucky we learn where they are planning next. Maybe even why the Director wants you so bad.

Saint rubbed the spot on his cheek where the shadowy girl had brushed her fingers. That girl last night knew things too. Maybe she is connected somehow. Or maybe she is just another piece we do not understand yet.

Sheriff chuckled mechanically. One thing at a time kid. First we hit the post. Then we worry about electric girls and cults. You did good in the dungeon. You will do good here. Just stay behind us until we say move.

The floating ruin came into view after an hour of steady walking. It was a cluster of broken stone platforms linked by swaying vine bridges. A small Zach Clan flag fluttered on the highest platform dark cloth with a glowing red eye symbol. Two scouts in dark robes patrolled the lower level rifles slung over their shoulders. They looked alert but bored chatting quietly.

Sheriff crouched behind a cluster of glowing bushes. Two on the ground. Probably more up top. We take the low ones quiet then move up. Saint you stay behind me. Shed you flank left. On my signal.

Saint gripped his metal rod tighter heart pounding but steady. Okay. I am ready.

They moved like shadows. Shed darted left silent as a predator his scales blending with the underbrush. Sheriff charged the first scout with surprising speed his metal fist cracking against the man jaw. The scout dropped without a sound. Shed took the second one from behind bone knife flashing once. The man crumpled.

Saint whispered. That was too easy. Where are the rest.

Sheriff pointed up the vine bridge. Up there. Stay low. Gravity shifts on the bridges so watch your step.

They climbed the swaying bridge one at a time. The world tilted slightly making Saint stomach lurch. At the top platform three more scouts sat around a small fire arguing over a holographic map. One of them pointed at a glowing symbol. The Director wants the new arrival alive. The kid from the portal. Says he is special. Zach Clan gets double pay if we bring him in untouched.

Saint froze behind a pillar. His stomach twisted. They are talking about me again.

Sheriff placed a hand on his shoulder. We knew that already kid. Stay calm. We grab the map and go. No noise.

Shed hissed softly. On three. One. Two. Three.

They burst out together. Sheriff fired two precise shots from his revolver dropping one scout instantly. Shed leaped onto another slashing with his claws and knife. Saint swung his metal rod hard catching the last scout in the side. The man stumbled but swung back with a fist. Saint dodged barely and hit him again until he went down. The fight was fast and brutal but they won. No alarms sounded. No reinforcements came.

Sheriff snatched the holographic map from the fire. Got it. Looks like coordinates for a bigger Zach Clan camp and notes on portal activity. This is good. Real good.

Shed wiped blood from his claws. Nice work Saint. You did not freeze. That rod swing was solid. You are learning fast.

Saint breathed hard adrenaline still pumping through him. I cannot believe we just did that. My heart was pounding the whole time. But I did not feel helpless. Thanks to you two I actually fought back. What does the map say exactly.

Sheriff unrolled the glowing display. It shows three more lookout posts and one main camp near the floating towers. Notes mention increased portal tears in the next cycle. And your name kid. Saint Dimi. Director priority one. Alive.

Saint stared at the map. Why me. I am just a kid who ran from his mom. Why does a whole cult care.

Shed shrugged. Dimensions like this feed on broken things. The Director collects people like you. Maybe he sees something in you we do not yet. But we have the map now. That is power.

They climbed down the bridges and started the walk back. The fields felt different now. Less scary. Saint walked between his friends talking the whole way.

That was crazy. My heart was pounding the whole time. But I did not freeze like in the dungeon. I actually hit that guy. It felt real. Like we accomplished something big.

Shed grinned showing sharp teeth. Told you. Team. We balance each other. You are getting stronger kid. Next time we will hit something bigger. Maybe even that main camp if we plan right.

Sheriff chuckled mechanically. Do not get cocky. But yeah. You held your own. First adventure down. Many more to come. Ceil is still our base for now. We study that map tonight and plan the next move. Zach Clan will notice those scouts missing soon. We stay ahead of them.

The sun was high by the time they reached the town edge. Ceil looked the same peaceful and alive but the trio felt changed. They had taken their first real step together. No more just running. Now they were moving forward with purpose.

Saint smiled faintly as they walked back toward the Rusty Anchor. Whatever the Director wants with me we will face it together. I am not running alone anymore. Thanks for explaining the Zach Clan earlier. It makes more sense now. A whole cult working for him. It is bigger than I thought.

Sheriff nodded. That is right kid. Welcome to the adventure. We keep learning together.

Shed slapped him on the back gently. Next stop whatever that map leads us to. But first food. I am starving after all that climbing and fighting.

They stepped back into the Rusty Anchor. The innkeeper gave them a knowing look but said nothing. They took their usual corner table and ordered stew again. Between bites they spread the map on the table talking in low voices.

Sheriff traced a glowing line. This camp here is too big for three of us right now. But these smaller posts. We can hit one more in a few days. Gather more before the clan figures out we are the ones striking back.

Shed pointed at a note on the map. Look. They mention portal tears near the old ruins. If we can find a stable one maybe we learn more about how you got here Saint.

Saint leaned in. I like that idea. I want to know why the portal opened for me. And why the Director cares. But we do it smart. Like today. No rushing in.

The afternoon passed with planning and rest. They explored Ceil a little more talking about the fight and what they learned. Saint felt stronger. The fear was still there but it was smaller now. Replaced by something new. Determination.

By evening they were back in the common room listening to rumors. One traveler mentioned Zach Clan activity picking up near the border. Another whispered about the electric girl being seen again. Sheriff glitched slightly at that. She keeps showing up. We add her to the list.

Saint nodded. One step at a time. Today was our first adventure. It worked. Tomorrow we plan the next.

Shed raised his cup of water. To the team. To more wins.

Sheriff clinked his metal finger against the cup. To surviving. And to figuring out why the Director wants you kid.

Saint smiled. To us. Whatever comes next.

The peaceful town welcomed them back. But deep down they all knew the real fight was just beginning. Mark was still hunting. The Director was watching. The Zach Clan was out there. And the mysterious electric girl was somewhere in the shadows.

For now though they had each other. And that was enough for their first adventure.
