Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: The Rightful Place

The atmosphere in the dining room changed completely.

It was subtle at first.

Then undeniable.

Warmth replaced tension.

Soft laughter replaced silence.

And at the center of it all

Was Lillian.

Elena stood quietly to the side, her hands loosely clasped in front of her as she watched everything unfold.

No one told her where to go.

No one asked if she was okay.

It was as if her presence no longer mattered.

"Lillian, sit here," Adrian's mother said warmly, pulling out the chair beside Adrian.

The same seat Elena had occupied just moments ago.

Lillian hesitated slightly, glancing at Elena.

"Oh… I don't want to cause any trouble

"It's not trouble," the older woman interrupted immediately.

"It's where you belong."

The words landed softly.

But their meaning was sharp.

Elena felt it.

A quiet sting beneath her calm expression.

Lillian finally sat down.

Right beside Adrian.

And he didn't object.

Not even for a second.

"You've gotten thinner," Adrian said, his gaze fixed on Lillian.

His voice softer than Elena had ever heard it.

Lillian smiled faintly. "I've been… busy."

"With what?" he asked.

She lowered her eyes, her voice gentle. "Missing you."

A soft murmur spread across the table.

Someone sighed.

Another smiled knowingly.

Elena remained still.

Because in that moment

Everything became painfully clear.

This was the version of Adrian she would never see.

Not the cold, distant man.

But the one who cared.

The one who noticed.

The one who felt.

And it wasn't for her.

"You should stay here," his mother added. "There's no need for you to go anywhere else."

Lillian hesitated, glancing at Adrian.

He didn't respond immediately.

But his silence felt like agreement.

"If it's not inconvenient…" she said softly.

"Of course not," his mother replied. "This is your home."

Home.

Elena's fingers tightened slightly.

The word echoed in her mind.

If this was Lillian's home…

Then what was she?

A guest?

No.

Even guests were treated better.

She was something else entirely.

Something temporary.

Disposable.

The rest of the breakfast passed in a blur.

Elena wasn't part of the conversation.

She wasn't expected to be.

Every topic revolved around Lillian.

Where she had been.

Why she left.

How much she was missed.

And Adrian

He listened.

He asked questions.

He cared.

Each moment felt like a quiet reminder.

Of what Elena didn't have.

Of what she would never have.

Eventually, she stepped away.

No one stopped her.

No one noticed.

She walked down the hallway slowly, her steps quiet against the polished floor.

The further she moved away from the dining room

The easier it was to breathe.

Until

"You're leaving?"

Her steps paused.

Adrian's voice.

She turned slowly.

He stood a few feet behind her, his expression unreadable.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Elena nodded slightly.

"I didn't think I was needed there."

His gaze lingered on her.

Sharp.

Observant.

"You knew what this was," he said.

The contract.

The reminder.

Elena met his eyes.

"I do."

A brief silence followed.

"But knowing something…" she continued softly, "…doesn't mean it feels any less real."

That seemed to catch him off guard.

Just slightly.

His brows drew together for a moment.

But then

The coldness returned.

"You agreed to this," he said.

"I did."

Her voice didn't shake.

Didn't break.

And that

That was new.

"But I didn't agree to lose myself in the process."

Adrian's gaze sharpened.

"What does that mean?"

Elena held his eyes.

Steady.

Calm.

"It means I won't compete."

A pause.

"Not with her. Not with anyone."

The words were simple.

But they carried weight.

"I'm not here to fight for your attention," she added.

Another pause.

Longer this time.

"Because I already know where it belongs."

Silence settled between them.

For a moment

Adrian didn't respond.

And that was rare.

Elena took a small breath.

"So don't worry," she continued.

"I'll respect the agreement."

Her lips curved slightly.

But there was no warmth in it.

"I won't be a problem."

Something flickered in his eyes.

Something unreadable.

But before it could settle

"Elena."

Lillian's voice.

Soft.

Gentle.

They both turned.

She stood at the end of the hallway, watching them.

"I hope I'm not interrupting," she said lightly.

Elena shook her head. "Not at all."

Lillian walked closer, her presence calm yet overwhelming.

"I wanted to speak with you," she said.

Elena blinked slightly.

"With me?"

Lillian nodded.

"Yes."

A small smile touched her lips.

"After all…"

Her eyes flickered briefly toward Adrian before returning to Elena.

"We're both important to him, aren't we?"

The words were soft.

But the meaning behind them

Was anything but.

Elena felt it instantly.

The challenge.

The quiet claim.

The unspoken truth.

But instead of reacting

She smiled.

Calm.

Polite.

"Of course."

And in that moment

Something inside Elena shifted.

Not pain.

Not anger.

But something quieter.

Stronger.

Understanding.

Because now

She knew exactly what kind of game she had been placed in.

And more importantly

She knew she had no intention of playing it.
