For the first time since entering the system—they rested. Not because they wanted to. But because they had to. The room stayed quiet, the soft lighting steady above them. No flickers. No sudden changes. No hidden threats—at least, none they could see. It almost felt normal. Almost.
Mira sat cross-legged on the bench, stretching her arm slowly, testing the soreness. "Next time," she muttered, "I vote we train somewhere that doesn't try to kill us."
Zane, lying flat on the floor with one arm over his eyes, raised a hand lazily. "Seconded.
Preferably somewhere with food. And less… murder robots."
"You'd still find a way to break something,"
Noor said from across the room, leaning against the wall.
Zane smirked without moving. "That's not a flaw. That's a skill."
A quiet huff of laughter escaped Tala as she organized the medical kit. The tension from earlier hadn't disappeared—but it had softened, just enough for moments like this to exist.
Kael sat nearby, resting his arms on his knees, gaze lowered but alert. Even while sitting still, he looked ready to move at any second.
Yuki remained by the wall, just like before—but now her eyes were closed. Not asleep. Just listening.
And Erza—wasn't in the center anymore. She had moved. Now sitting slightly apart—not far, but not fully within the circle either. It wasn't distance. Not intentional. Just… space.
Tala noticed first. She always did. Without making it obvious, she walked over and sat beside her, offering a small bottle of water. "You should drink," she said gently.
Erza took it after a second. "Thank you."
They sat in silence for a moment. Not uncomfortable. Not forced. Then Tala spoke again. "…You don't have to figure everything out right now."
Erza glanced at her slightly. "I know." A pause. "…But it feels like I should."
Tala smiled faintly. "That's because you carry things before they're yours to carry."
That made Erza pause.
Across the room, Zane peeked from under his arm, watching them for a second—then looked away, pretending he hadn't. Mira noticed that too. Of course she did.
She stood up and walked over—no hesitation this time. "You're sitting like you're about to disappear," she said bluntly, stopping in front of Erza.
Erza blinked slightly. "…I'm right here."
"Yeah," Mira said, crossing her arms.
"Physically." Silence. Then—Mira sighed. Not frustrated. Just honest. "Look," she said, softer now. "I don't care what they called you. Or what you were to them." A pause. "But don't start pulling away now."
That hit deeper than anything sharp could've. Erza held her gaze. "…I'm not."
Mira studied her for a second longer—then nodded once. "Good." No more questions.
No more pushing. That was enough.
Kael stood then, stretching slightly before walking over. He didn't say anything at first—just sat down nearby, grounding the space without needing words.
Yuki opened her eyes. Watched. Then, quietly—she moved too. Now—no one was apart. Not fully.
Zane finally sat up, looking around at all of them. "…You know what's weird?" he said.
"Everything?" Mira replied immediately.
"Okay, yes, but specifically right now," Zane continued. "We just went through all that—and somehow, this feels… harder."
No one laughed this time. Because he wasn't wrong.
Noor spoke, her voice calm but thoughtful.
"Combat is simple," she said. "You act. You respond. You survive."
A small pause. "This?" she gestured lightly between them, "…this requires trust."
Silence settled again. But it wasn't heavy anymore. It was real. Erza looked around at them—all of them. Not as a unit. Not as a system. As people. Her people.
"…Then we build it," she said. Simple. Certain.
Kael nodded. Yuki didn't speak—but her presence was answer enough.
Mira smirked slightly. "We already are."
Zane leaned back on his hands. "…Yeah.
Kinda hard not to, when we keep almost dying together."
Tala laughed softly. And for the first time—it felt genuine.
But above them—unseen—the system flickered again. This time—longer. Watching. Learning. And preparing—not just to test them. But to break them.
