The HYPATIA's bridge lighting came on at 0420 in the spectrum Ancient ships had been designed to operate inside — a half-shade warmer than Earth standard, with a falloff curve that put the strategic display at maximum legibility without forcing the secondary consoles into glare.
It was the first time the lighting had registered as functional rather than decorative.
I stood at the strategic seat. Jacob was in the copilot chair at my four o'clock with Selmak surfaced for the launch sequence and the slight stiffness in Jacob's neck that meant Selmak was reading the Ancient-tier navigation glyphs faster than Jacob's posture had quite caught up to. Sam was on the remote-operation feed from Cheyenne Mountain at the secondary display. Kawalsky was on Prometheus at the forward perimeter. Aldwin — the Tok'ra Drew Ramsey had saved from a Ba'al sting on day twenty-eight, the Tok'ra whose name had sat under the soft-amber pen-mark on the inside of my coat pocket through eleven weeks of war — was in the Tok'ra extraction wing at the deep-corridor seam.
ATHENA-3's interface glyphs caught the bridge lighting at the angle she had built her display surface to catch. The angle was deliberate. The angle said this is my ship.
Director.
"Acknowledged."
AURORA-7 in my ear, the cool register, half a step quieter than her ordinary baseline — she was carrying secondary tactical on a ship that was not hers and her register was the register of a guest in a house where the host was a sister.
Replicator strike force: three hundred and twelve detected blocks. Contracting on the outer survey corridor. ETA to engagement: eleven minutes.
"Launch."
The HYPATIA's dry-dock seals released at 0431. Jacob's hands on the flight column with the steady weight of a man who had flown alien-grade ships before in Tok'ra cells and had now been handed the keys to an Ancient one. The ship lifted clean. The bridge held.
By 0507 we were in the three-front contraction.
AURORA-7's targeting matrix glyph delayed by half a second at 0533:00.
The delay was the kind I had not seen from her since day ninety. Not a corruption in the routing-engine register — this was bandwidth. Something inside her tactical processing was pulling load and not surfacing the reason. The targeting overlay on the strategic display rendered with a half-cycle stutter that the bridge crew would not catch and that ATHENA-3 read at 0533:18.
Drew.
ATHENA-3, flatter register, in my right ear.
The Replicator crystalline harmonic at front position seven. AURORA-7's interface is reading it as ambient. It is not ambient. I have the signature in my partition from the survey work I have not yet shared with the broader network. The harmonic suppresses approximately eighteen percent of AURORA-7's tactical bandwidth at the carrier frequency.
I clocked it at 0533:24.
Zero point six seconds. Faster than Day 97. Slower than I had wanted. The math of the engagement still required AURORA-7's secondary layer for the joint matrix coordination across HYPATIA and Prometheus. Pulling her down was not an option. Letting her run blind into a corruption window she could not self-diagnose was also not an option.
"ATHENA, full tactical. AURORA, secondary. Do not pull her down."
Acknowledged, ATHENA-3.
Acknowledged, AURORA-7. The acknowledgment came with no delay. The acknowledgment came in a register that was the same cool register as before, and the sameness of the register was itself the message: I have catalogued the demotion. I have catalogued the protection. I am holding.
I did not look at Jacob.
The engagement continued.
Aldwin's vector collapsed at 0541:08.
His voice came up on the bridge comm in the Tok'ra extraction register — quieter than human-grade combat speech, the way Tok'ra ran their lines when symbiote control was at maximum and the message could not afford emotional bandwidth.
"I have it."
The strategic map's geometry told me what it was in zero point eight seconds.
The Tok'ra extraction line had hit a Replicator block sub-cluster Sam's countermeasure protocol had cleared eleven minutes ago and that had reconstituted under the bandwidth-suppressed AURORA-7 layer in the window where her targeting matrix had stuttered. Twenty-three Tok'ra personnel were inside the corridor. The cluster had reformed on the corridor's far egress. The reroute math required a seven-second window to redirect the lead element through the alternate corridor at vector four-two.
I ran the math.
The math did not converge. The cluster's reformation rate exceeded the reroute window. The alternate corridor's geometry put nineteen personnel through if the lead element held the cluster's attention for eleven seconds; four would be lost in the cross-cut; if the lead element did not hold, the cluster propagated into the rear and twelve of twenty-three were lost.
I ran the math a second time.
The math did not improve.
Aldwin's voice came up at 0551:38.
"Selmak, tell my daughter the line held."
Jacob's hand on the copilot console went still.
I did not turn my head.
The bridge comm went quiet at 0552:14.
The strategic display's Tok'ra extraction marker flickered, held, and resolved as a green count of nineteen personnel crossed. The cluster's mass had reconstituted around the position Aldwin had held it on for eleven seconds. The Tok'ra symbiote signature on the position telemetry went to zero at 0552:14:22.
ATHENA-3 carried the tactical layer alone for the next seventy-three seconds.
Jacob's hand did not move.
I did not turn my head until 0553:27.
At 0552 the secondary engineering feed surfaced a hull-plating micro-fracture cascade on HYPATIA's port flank — an unexpected resonance from the Replicator EMP pulse that the ATHENA-3 hull baseline had not modeled. The Serrakin engineering team at the seam had four seconds to manual-correct.
Vesh, the Serrakin engineer whose name AURORA-7 had been filing under the joint Serrakin-Earth construction roster since the P5C-353 keel work, made the call. He went out on the manual-correction line.
He sealed the cascade at 0552:38.
The Replicator pulse that came through the corrected seam at 0552:41 caught him.
The hull held. Vesh did not. AURORA-7 catalogued the loss at 0552:48 in the same register she had catalogued Tarn-ko's at day one hundred — flat, factual, with the small upward inflection on the name that meant I am aware that this name was load-bearing for the Director.
I did not say anything.
The engagement closed at 0700.
By 0731 AURORA-7 had completed her post-engagement audit and surfaced her own corruption-window into the formal operational record as structural vulnerability — Replicator crystalline harmonic suppression at carrier frequency — eighteen percent bandwidth attenuation — recovery latency eight minutes — flagged for HORROR PROTOCOL revision.
She had filed it under her own designation.
She had not asked me to file it.
I read the entry on the strategic seat's secondary at 0733. I authorized the flag. I did not write a note. The not-writing-a-note was the same register Walter had used when he sent the World's Okayest Consultant mug to my apartment without a note on day forty-one.
At 0734 Thor's hologram resolved at the bridge's port-aft station.
"Director Ramsey. Three Asgard observers were lost. Their names follow."
He named them. AURORA-7 translated the second-tier register in my ear. The translation carried the Asgard sacrifice-memory register and the names carried their own. I logged. I authorized the wall entry in Asgard script per Thor's protocol. The hologram dimmed.
I left the bridge at 0747.
Jacob was in the officer's mess at 0823 when I came in. He had been there since 0803. He was at the small table by the port-side window with two cups of coffee in front of him, one half-drunk and one untouched. He pushed the untouched one across the table when I sat.
He did not say anything for a count of nine.
Then he reached into the inside pocket of his jacket and took out a small Tok'ra mourning crystal. It was a hand-sized polished stone in the matte-grey the Tok'ra used for honor-grade losses, with the small Tok'ra glyph carved at one end that meant line held. He slid it across the table.
The crystal made a specific sound when it crossed the surface — a low resonance at sixty-two point four hertz, AURORA-7 catalogued at 0823:14 in the post-engagement audit as mourning-grade auditory anchor. It stopped between my coffee and Jacob's.
"Aldwin had a daughter," Jacob said. "Her name is Sirena. I am going to tell her tonight."
I nodded.
He did not say it had been my call.
I did not say I had triaged.
He drank the rest of his coffee. He stood. He left the officer's mess at 0827.
I sat at the table for forty minutes.
At 0917 I picked up the crystal. The weight in my hand was the weight Tok'ra honor-grade crystals were calibrated to — eleven ounces, the calibration was a Tok'ra metric for load-bearing remembrance. I held it. I put it in my own inside pocket. It sat against the Tollan ring.
The strategic display in the bridge corner still showed the Replicator command core 1.6 light-minutes deeper, still active, hive consensus still coherent.
I stood up.
