Chapter 2 - Chapter 2 Becoming a system

After God knows how much time, Riva regained consciousness. The first thing she saw was a brightly lit space — a laboratory, but much more futuristic, like something from a science fiction movie — with large screens floating in the air showing different people, and thousands of control buttons below.

Where is she? Was that all a dream? If she remembers correctly, she lost consciousness while the trio was talking about silencing her. But how come I am alive?

She tried to see herself, tried to raise her hands — but there were none.

She panicked, trying to move, until she saw her reflection in a transparent mirror. She was a round, glowing ball with black lines inside it.

What is this? Is this her? Has she died and reincarnated as a round light ball with black lines? What the hell? she thought to herself, horrified.

Before she could ponder further, two men in black entered the laboratory. They were wearing tight-fitting black clothes with large, knee-length black leather-like fabric trousers — she couldn't even determine the fabric, as it was nothing she had seen before. What's all this happening? her mind raced.

She perked up her ears when she saw them talking, desperate to determine her condition.

The older, middle-aged man said, "Is this your work? You can't even take care of such a small world. Why do you have to go and get emotional? Don't you know you're a system, and your work is to help complete the tasks given by the Transmigration Bureau, not make the novel world collapse?"

What is this? System? Transmigration? Where has she ended up? Riva thought to herself but didn't forget to listen further.

The young man pouted. "Uncle Peter, it's not that serious. I was just swayed for a moment. And it's too boring to be a system, you know. I always want to become a player, but my family forced me into this. Can't you do something?"

Peter laughed exasperatedly. "Don't call me uncle. Small thing? You call it a small thing? You know what you've done? Because of you, my job is also in jeopardy. I begged the council to let you work. You know how I felt that time? If not for you, would I have bowed my head in front of those old-timers? After requesting, they decided to give you a final chance. They will send you to five different worlds as a law-abiding system — which is the easiest — and if you can't even complete three missions, you will be dismantled and dumped in the backyard. Now go and memorize all the codes and conduct of a system. And forget about being a player — players are chosen from the main world. We can only serve as their systems."

After saying all this, the uncle left with a huff.

The young man took a deep breath to regulate his breathing before starting to move, thinking about something. He bit his lips in tension about being dismantled.

After thinking, he stopped moving as if he had reached a conclusion.

He slowly walked towards the glowing orb — towards Riva.

Riva, who was watching all this, suddenly tensed. What is he doing? Why is he coming towards me? her heart pounded — if a glowing ball could pound.

But the man continued moving as if he couldn't even hear what she was thinking.

He stopped in front of her and picked up the transparent tube in which Riva was placed.

He smirked as he said, "Why should you be the player while I have to support you as a system and work as your slave? I also want to be a player — just like you."

He smiled evilly.

With Riva in hand, he walked towards the counter in the centre of the laboratory. He placed her there before typing a code. Then suddenly, Riva felt her body — the round, glowing ball — suddenly bound by several invisible chains, tampering with her mind.

The man entered "E099" on the screen before turning towards her. "Sorry, but I want to be a player, so you have to make a sacrifice. I am really sorry — you will take my place as a system, and I will take your place as a player."

He pressed the enter key.

Suddenly, Riva's body started glowing brightly.

She cursed under her breath, "What the hell is this? Why does every bad luck have to come my way?" She glared at the man standing in front of her, smiling slyly, and thought — she would definitely take her revenge when she got her chance.

Before she could think further, the pain intensified, and a bulk of information started entering her mind.
