The palace was dying.
Worlds disappeared around them like stars being extinguished.
Aurelia stood at the center of the collapsing realities.
Veyne beside her.
The silver-eyed boy between them.
The Before surrounded them.
Its voices became one.
"YOU CANNOT CREATE."
Aurelia looked at it.
"Neither could I."
The creature paused.
"I only knew how to repeat."
She looked at Veyne.
"I thought the only way forward was to find the perfect world."
Veyne shook his head.
"There isn't one."
Aurelia looked at the boy.
"Then we'll make one that doesn't need to be perfect."
The boy stepped forward.
His silver eyes began glowing.
The palace cracked.
Aurelia felt something leave her.
Not her memories.
Not her power.
Her certainty.
For the first time, she had no idea what would happen next.
And she was okay with that.
Veyne reached toward her.
She took his hand.
Not because destiny demanded it.
Not because a cycle had written it.
Because she wanted to.
The boy raised his hands.
Every surviving world began collapsing into a single point of light.
The Before screamed.
"YOU WILL DESTROY EVERYTHING."
Aurelia answered:
"Maybe."
The light grew brighter.
"But everything doesn't have to mean forever."
The world disappeared.
For a moment, there was nothing.
No time.
No memory.
No Aurelia.
No Veyne.
No boy.
Then—
A heartbeat.
Another.
Another.
A sky appeared.
Blue.
Clouds moved slowly across it.
A river reflected sunlight.
Grass moved beneath a gentle wind.
Aurelia opened her eyes.
She was lying beneath a tree.
She sat up.
Everything was quiet.
Too quiet.
She looked around.
"Veyne?"
No answer.
Her heart dropped.
She stood.
"Veyne!"
Someone laughed behind her.
She turned.
Veyne stood several steps away.
Alive.
No crown.
No throne.
No darkness surrounding him.
Just Veyne.
He looked around.
"So…"
He smiled.
"…we survived."
Aurelia laughed softly.
"I think so."
The boy appeared between them.
But something was different.
His silver eyes were gone.
They were ordinary now.
Aurelia looked at him.
"What happened to you?"
He smiled.
"I don't need them anymore."
"Why?"
"Because I was created to prove that choice existed."
He looked around.
"But now choice exists everywhere."
Aurelia looked toward the horizon.
The world was unfinished.
Mountains were still forming.
Rivers were finding their paths.
Stars were appearing in the sky one by one.
It wasn't perfect.
It wasn't safe.
It wasn't predetermined.
It was alive.
Veyne stood beside her.
"What do we call it?"
Aurelia thought for a moment.
She looked at the boy.
Then at Veyne.
Then at the horizon.
"Home."
The boy smiled.
But suddenly his expression changed.
He looked upward.
Aurelia followed his gaze.
A single black star had appeared among the others.
It hadn't been created with the rest.
It was older.
Watching.
Waiting.
Veyne noticed it too.
"That wasn't there before."
"No," the boy whispered.
Aurelia felt the familiar cold return.
"What is it?"
The boy stared at the star.
"I don't know."
The black star blinked.
Once.
Twice.
Then a voice whispered across the newborn world.
Not the voice of the Before.
Not the voice of the kings.
Something else.
Something that had survived the destruction of every world.
Aurelia's face went pale.
Because the voice knew her.
It whispered:
"You finally made a world without me."
The black star opened.
Like an eye.
Veyne reached for his weapon.
Aurelia stepped forward.
The boy whispered:
"There's one thing we forgot."
Aurelia looked at him.
"What?"
He stared at the black star.
"We never found out who created the Before."
The star smiled.
And the new world went dark.
