Chapter 24 - Late Night Experiment

The academy had fallen quiet by the time Will finished his evening duties in the Grand Cafeteria.

The last students had long since left, leaving behind the faint echo of laughter and the lingering scent of mana-infused bread. Will wiped down the final counter, the Simple Apron heavy with the day's accumulated stains. The Mother's Worn Pot sat on its usual shelf, its silver-gray glow steady and warm in the dim lantern light.

He was tired, but sleep felt far away. The day's events — the successful mission, Cyrus's mocking words, Einsfel's quiet support — kept replaying in his mind. More than that, the strange spark he had felt earlier in the prep kitchen still lingered, like a gentle fire burning just beneath his skin.

Instead of heading straight to his dormitory, Will slipped into the small prep kitchen behind the main hall. The room was empty and peaceful, lit only by a single floating lantern. He set the Mother's Worn Pot on the counter, rolled up his sleeves, and began to experiment.

He wasn't aiming for anything grand. Just a small test batch of a new combination — something that might bridge Tier 1 and the Tier 2 skills he could feel hovering just out of reach. He chopped vegetables with the Inherited Kitchen Knife, the blade moving with practiced precision. He added spices carefully, watching the broth simmer in the pot.

As the aroma filled the small space, that familiar warm spark returned. The silver-gray light on the pot's rim brightened. Will felt it again — that subtle resonance, as if the ingredients themselves were responding to something deeper than heat and seasoning.

He tasted a small spoonful.

The flavor was richer than expected. The heat spread through him, sharpening his senses. For a brief moment, he saw faint blue threads of magic swirling in the air around the pot — echoes of Einsfel's power reacting to his own.

"This… is getting stronger," he murmured.

He was still lost in thought when the door opened softly.

Einsfel stepped inside, closing the door behind her with a quiet click. She was wearing a simple loose robe over her nightgown, her long silver-gray hair loose and slightly damp from a recent bath. Her blue eyes lit up when they found him.

"I thought I might find you here," she said softly, a gentle smile curving her lips. "You couldn't sleep either?"

Will shook his head. "I was trying something new. The soup… it felt different tonight."

Einsfel walked over and peered into the pot. She took the spoon from his hand, brought it to her lips, and tasted a small sip.

Her eyes fluttered closed for a moment. A soft, involuntary sigh escaped her.

"Oh… Will," she breathed. "It's stronger. The warmth goes deeper. My magic is responding even before I finish the bowl. It feels like… you're reaching inside me and gently calming everything down."

She opened her eyes and looked at him with a mixture of wonder and deep affection.

"You're getting better. Not just at cooking — at this… whatever power you're awakening. I can feel it."

Will rubbed the back of his neck, a little embarrassed but unable to hide his small smile.

"I don't know what it is yet," he admitted. "It just… happens when I think about you. About keeping you safe. About not wanting to be separated again. The more I cook with that feeling, the stronger it becomes."

Einsfel set the spoon down and stepped closer until there was almost no space left between them. She reached up and gently touched the side of his face, her fingers warm and tender.

"Then keep thinking about that," she whispered. "Because every time you do, I feel it too. It makes me feel safe. It makes me feel… wanted."

The air between them grew warmer, charged with something deeper than words.

Einsfel leaned in and kissed him — slow and deep, full of the quiet longing they had been carrying since the last time they were alone. Her hands slid under his shirt, tracing the lines of his chest and shoulders as the kiss grew warmer, more urgent.

Will's arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her flush against him. He could feel the elegant curve of her body through the robe, the steady beat of her heart, the faint blue shimmer of her magic beginning to dance across her skin.

Einsfel made a soft, needy sound against his mouth. Her fingers worked at the ties of his apron, letting it fall to the floor with a quiet rustle. Then she began unbuttoning his shirt, her touch both gentle and trembling with anticipation.

When their clothes finally lay scattered across the floor, Einsfel guided him backward until his hips met the edge of the counter. She straddled him, her long silver-gray hair cascading around them like a curtain, blocking out the rest of the world.

She moved against him slowly at first, savoring the connection. Her hands rested on his chest as she rocked gently, eyes half-lidded with pleasure.

"Will…" she moaned softly, her voice breaking beautifully. "You feel so good… so deep inside me… it's like your warmth is reaching every part of me."

Their rhythm gradually built — tender at first, then more urgent as desire took over. Einsfel's magic glowed brighter, wrapping around both of them in a warm, protective blue light. Every movement, every shared breath felt deeper, more intimate, and impossibly connected.

When pleasure finally crested over them, Einsfel cried out his name, her body arching and trembling as waves of intense release and stabilized magic washed through her. Will followed moments later, holding her tightly as the world narrowed to nothing but her warmth, her voice, and the steady glow of her magic surrounding them both.

They collapsed together against the counter, breathing hard, skin slick with sweat and glowing faintly.

Einsfel curled against his chest, her silver-gray hair spilling over his shoulder like a soft blanket. She pressed a series of gentle, lingering kisses along his collarbone and up to his neck, her fingers tracing lazy, affectionate patterns on his skin.

"I needed that," she whispered, voice hoarse and full of contentment. "After today… after hearing those whispers again… I just wanted to be close to you. To remind myself that you're here. That we're together."

Will wrapped his arms around her, holding her close and pressing a kiss to the top of her head.

"I'm not going anywhere," he said quietly. "No matter what they say about me."

Einsfel smiled against his skin.

"I know."

They stayed like that for a long moment, wrapped in each other's warmth as the golden sunlight slowly faded outside the window. The mana flowers in the distance glowed softly, as if approving of the quiet moment.

Eventually, Einsfel lifted her head to look at him, her blue eyes soft but serious.

"The academy is going to get harder," she said. "There will be more people like Cyrus. More challenges. But… as long as we have moments like this, I think we can face anything."

Will nodded, brushing a strand of hair from her face.

"We will."

As the first stars began to appear in the evening sky, they slowly dressed and made their way back toward the dormitory buildings, hands brushing occasionally in the shadows.

Behind them, the prep kitchen returned to stillness.

But the bond between them had grown just a little stronger.

And somewhere deep inside Will, the spark of Flavor Awakening continued to burn — warmer, steadier, and full of quiet promise.
