Chapter 6 - CHAPTER 6: Don’t Leave Again

Lin An didn't sleep that night. She lay on the bed in complete darkness, her eyes fixed on the ceiling while her mind replayed the same image over and over again. The mirror. The slight delay. The way her reflection had moved a second too late, as if it were something separate from her, something that had been watching instead of reflecting. The memory clung to her thoughts, refusing to fade, tightening slowly around her chest until even breathing felt different.

At some point, the silence of the house became unbearable.

She sat up.

The air felt too still, too heavy, as if the walls themselves were listening. Shen Wei's warning lingered in her mind, clear and deliberate, but it no longer carried the same weight as before. Not because she trusted him, but because staying here felt like stepping deeper into something she couldn't understand.

"I just need a minute," she murmured under her breath, though there was no one there to hear it.

She stood, moving quietly into the hallway. The house was silent, wrapped in darkness, every sound amplified by the emptiness around her. Her footsteps were soft, cautious, but she didn't hesitate. By the time she reached the door, the decision had already been made.

She only needed air.

Nothing more.

Her hand closed around the handle, and for a brief second, she paused. Shen Wei's voice echoed faintly in her mind.

Don't leave.

She pushed the door open anyway.

Cold air rushed in, sharp and grounding. Lin An stepped outside, her shoulders relaxing slightly as the night stretched out before her. The street was empty, bathed in dim yellow light, quiet in a way that felt almost reassuring after the suffocating stillness inside.

For a moment, everything seemed normal.

Too normal.

She let out a slow breath, the tension in her chest loosening just a little. "See?" she whispered to herself, almost forcing the thought into existence. "Nothing's—"

A sound broke through the silence.

Behind her.

Footsteps.

Lin An froze instantly. Her breath caught, her body going still as every sense sharpened at once. Another step followed, slow and deliberate, close enough that she could feel it rather than hear it.

She turned.

A figure stood at the edge of the streetlight, half-hidden in shadow, motionless yet unmistakably present. Something about the way he stood made her pulse spike, a cold instinct rising before her thoughts could catch up.

She stepped back.

The figure moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

Her breath shattered as she turned to run, but she didn't get far. A hand shot out of the darkness and closed around her arm, cold and unyielding, dragging her back with sudden force.

"Got you."

Her scream barely had time to form before the world shifted violently. The grip tightened, pulling her off balance—

and then, just as abruptly, it was gone.

A sharp impact echoed through the night. The man was thrown aside, his body hitting the ground with a heavy, jarring sound that sent a shock through the silence.

Lin An stumbled forward, her vision spinning, her breath uneven, until something solid caught her.

An arm.

Firm. Steady.

She didn't need to look to know who it was.

Shen Wei.

His hand settled at her waist, holding her upright as if anchoring her back into place. The contact was controlled, deliberate, leaving no room for doubt.

"Stay behind me."

His voice was low, colder than she had ever heard it.

Lin An's fingers tightened instinctively around his sleeve, her body reacting before her thoughts could follow. The world no longer felt distant or unreal. It was sharp now, immediate, dangerous.

The man on the ground let out a strained breath and pushed himself up slowly. This time, the light caught him just enough for her to see more clearly.

And then her gaze dropped.

A ring.

Black. Simple.

Her heart skipped.

Another one.

Shen Wei stepped forward, placing himself fully between them. The shift was subtle, but it changed everything. The space felt smaller, heavier, charged with something that made it hard to breathe.

"You shouldn't be here," he said.

The man laughed under his breath, wiping at the blood on his lip. "Looks like she's still as careless as before."

Before.

The word struck harder than it should have.

Lin An's grip tightened without her realizing it.

"What do you want?" Shen Wei asked.

Calm. Focused. Controlled.

The man's gaze moved past him, settling directly on her. "Her."

A brief silence followed.

Then Shen Wei answered, his voice steady and certain. "She's not leaving with you."

The man's smile didn't fade. "You think you can stop it?"

"I know I can."

There was no hesitation.

Something in the air shifted, thin and fragile, like the moment before something breaks.

The man moved first.

A flash of metal caught the light.

Lin An's breath stopped.

The knife.

For a split second, the world aligned perfectly with the video she had seen. The same motion, the same angle, the same inevitability closing in—

And then it shattered.

Shen Wei moved faster.

His hand caught the attacker's wrist mid-strike, stopping the blade just short of its mark. The impact was precise, controlled, as if he had anticipated it down to the exact second.

There was no struggle.

Only outcome.

He twisted sharply, a crack cutting through the quiet night as the knife slipped from the man's grasp and hit the ground. A moment later, the attacker collapsed to one knee, his breath uneven.

Lin An couldn't move.

Everything felt too real now.

Too close.

Shen Wei stepped forward, pressing him down completely, his knee locking him in place with effortless force. There was no anger in his expression, no visible strain, only complete control.

"Who sent you?" he asked.

The man laughed weakly, lifting his head just enough to meet Lin An's eyes. "You already know."

Her chest tightened.

Before she could react, he added quietly, "Ask her."

Silence fell again, heavier than before.

Lin An felt something shift inside her, something unstable and unfamiliar. "What does that mean?" she asked, her voice unsteady despite herself.

No answer came.

Then the man spoke again, softer this time, almost amused.

"You really don't remember anything."

Her mind went blank.

"Remember what?"

He didn't respond immediately. Instead, he slowly lifted his hand and pointed at her.

"You were the one who started this."

The words hit like something physical, knocking the air out of her lungs. For a moment, she couldn't even process them.

"What…?"

Before she could finish, Shen Wei moved.

A single, precise strike, and the man collapsed instantly, unconscious.

The silence that followed felt different now. Not empty, but heavy, filled with something unresolved.

Lin An stood there, her thoughts tangled, her pulse still racing. None of it made sense, and yet it felt like it should.

Shen Wei bent down, picking up the knife with calm, practiced movements, as if this entire situation had been expected.

Then he turned to her.

"You shouldn't have left."

His voice was colder now, sharper in a way that left no room for argument.

"I just needed—"

"I told you not to."

She swallowed, forcing herself to hold his gaze. "You don't get to decide that."

For a moment, he didn't respond.

Then he stepped closer.

Not slowly this time.

Before she could react, his hand closed around her wrist again, firmer than before, grounding her in place.

"Listen carefully," he said.

Her breath caught.

"If you leave again…"

His grip tightened just enough to make the words sink in.

"I won't come after you next time."

Her heart pounded violently.

She couldn't tell if it was a warning or a threat.

Maybe it was both.

Shen Wei released her abruptly, as if the moment had already ended for him.

"As of now," he said, turning away, "you don't go anywhere without me."

Lin An didn't answer.

Because this time, she wasn't sure she could.

Behind them, the man lay unconscious, unmoving beneath the dim streetlight.

And in her mind, one sentence echoed again and again, refusing to fade.

You were the one who started this.
