The rain wouldn't stop. It just kept drumming on the metal roof—bang, bang, bang—like it was trying to break in.
Kiara sat by the edge of the lorry, her eyes straining to see through the grey sheets of water. "Where are you, Mara?" she whispered. Her voice was lost in the wind. "Please come back. It's been too long."
She was so tired, but she couldn't sleep. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the empty street and the dark shadows. She crawled to the very back of the lorry, hugging her knees, shivering in her damp clothes.
CREEEAK.
The sound of the heavy metal door moving made Kiara jump. Her heart leaped into her throat. "Mara?" she gasped, her eyes shining with hope. "Mara, is that—"
But it wasn't Mara.
A man stepped into the lorry. He was big and smelled like old cigarettes and rain. He didn't look like a helper. He looked at Kiara like she was a piece of bread and he was a starving dog.
"Wow," he muttered, his eyes roaming over her in a way that made Kiara's skin crawl. "What do we have here?"
He started walking toward her, slow and steady. Kiara's heart was drumming faster than the rain. She scrambled backward, her hands hitting the cold metal floor. "Go away!" she screamed, but her voice sounded so small. "Leave me alone!"
"Today is my lucky day," the man grinned. It wasn't a nice smile. He lunged forward, his big, rough hands grabbing at her tiny legs.
"NO! HELP! MARA!" Kiara shrieked, kicking and pulling, but he was too strong. He started pulling at her clothes, his breath hot and scary against her face. Kiara felt like she was drowning.
SLAM!
The door burst open again. Mara stood there, drenched in rain, holding a small plastic bag. Her face went pale as she saw the man over Kiara
She became terrified She just dropped the bag and grabbed a heavy iron bar laying near the door. With a loud grunt, she swung it with both hands.
CRACK!
The iron hit the side of the man's head. He groaned, his hands letting go of Kiara as he slumped to the floor, clutching his head. Blood began to leak through his fingers, staining the dusty floor of the lorry.
"Run!" Mara screamed, grabbing Kiara's hand and yanking her up.
They didn't look back. They jumped out of the lorry and into the freezing rain, their feet hitting the puddles as they ran blindly into the dark, terrified and breathless
