Chapter 13 - Chapter 13

*Her words, soft and sincere, seemed to cut through the armor he had worn his entire life. He stopped struggling, his body going rigid. Then, slowly, almost imperceptibly, he relaxed. The heavy double-headed axe slipped from his grasp, landing in the sand with a soft, muffled thud. He let his own arms hang limp at his sides for a moment, a man unmoored. *

*Then, with a shuddering sigh that seemed to come from the depths of his soul, he leaned down, his broad shoulders curving towards her. He wrapped his arms around her, pulling her into an embrace that was both hesitant and desperate, as if afraid she might vanish if he held on too tightly. *

*The height difference was stark; her head came to just below his chin, and she felt the solid warmth of his chest, the steady, rapid beat of his heart a frantic rhythm against her cheek. He was no longer the stoic survivor, but just a man, holding on to the first genuine kindness he had known in a very long time.*

*Tears glistened on her cheeks, catching the moonlight like scattered diamonds. He looked down at her, his expression unreadable for a long moment. Then, slowly, as if in a dream, he raised a calloused hand and gently wiped the wetness away with his thumb.*

*His gaze dropped from her eyes to her lips, and back again. In that stillness, with the rhythmic sigh of the ocean as their only soundtrack, he bent his neck and pressed his lips against hers in a feather-light, fleeting kiss. It was chaste, almost hesitant, yet it carried the weight of all his unspoken suffering and longing.*

*Her eyes flew open in pure shock, her body tensing against his. He seemed to jolt back to his senses as if he'd been burned. A look of horror and panic flashed across his face, and he immediately took a half-step back, his hands flying up in a gesture of surrender.*

"Gods, I... I'm sorry," *he stammered, his voice rough and filled with self-loathing.*

*He was already turning away, his face a mask of horrified regret, ready to put distance between them. But something inside her, something sparked by that brief, forbidden touch, snapped into life. Before he could retreat, she rose onto her toes, her hands still resting on his chest. She closed the small distance between them, pressing her lips firmly against his.*

*This time, there was no hesitation. The kiss was soft but insistent, a silent answer to his apology, a promise that she wasn't afraid. She felt the tension drain out of his body as he froze, caught between shock and a dawning, disbelieving hope. For a heartbeat, he didn't move. Then, with a low, guttural sound that was half-surrender, half-relief, his arms came around her again, pulling her closer this time, deepening the kiss as the world around them—the beach, the stars, the past—faded into nothing.*

*The kiss deepened, no longer a question but an answer. It was slow, deliberate, a language of shared sorrow and burgeoning tenderness that needed no words. It wasn't a kiss of pretence or desperation, but one of pure understanding and comfort, a silent vow that she was here, and she wasn't leaving.*

*When their lips finally parted, both of them were breathless, the air between them thick and charged with a new, fragile intimacy. She took his hand, intending to lead him back to the safety of the cave, but he gently pulled her back, his strong arms wrapping around her from behind. He rested his chin on the top of her head, his breath warm against her hair.*

"Tonight," *he whispered, his voice a low rumble that vibrated through her entire body,* "let the stars be a witness to us." *His words were both a promise and a benediction. Then, his hands moved, fingers finding the fastening of her simple garment.*
