Chapter 10 - Chapter 34: The Truth That Came Too Close

The moment stretched in a way that didn't feel normal anymore, as if everything inside the room had slowed down just enough for Zein Shoin to become painfully aware of every detail—her own breathing, the distance between her and Ace Craige, the silence that wasn't empty but filled with everything they had been building toward without saying it directly—and for the first time, she realized that this wasn't something she could step away from even if she tried, because this wasn't just about staying anymore, it was about choosing to stay, and that difference made everything feel heavier, more real, more irreversible, while Ace stood there like he had already reached that conclusion long before she had, like he had been waiting for her to catch up to something he never doubted, and that quiet certainty in him made her feel both frustrated and strangely steady at the same time.

"You're not stepping back," he said.

"No," she replied.

"That wasn't hesitation," he said.

"No," she said again.

Ace watched her carefully.

"That's new," he said.

"…don't make it a big deal," she said.

"It is," he replied.

Zein frowned slightly.

"You keep saying that," she said.

"Because you keep proving it," he said.

Zein exhaled slowly.

"…this isn't how I usually act," she said.

"I know," he said.

"…then why aren't you questioning it?" she asked.

"Because I don't need to," he said.

"That doesn't make sense," she said.

"It does," he replied.

"…then explain it," she said.

Ace stepped slightly closer.

"You're choosing this," he said.

Zein's breath slowed.

"…I didn't say that," she said.

"You didn't have to," he replied.

Zein looked at him, her expression tightening slightly.

"…stop deciding things for me," she said.

"I'm not deciding," he said, "I'm recognizing."

"That's the same thing," she said.

"No," he replied, "it's not."

Zein crossed her arms slightly.

"…you're too sure," she said.

"And you're not sure enough," he said.

Zein looked away for a moment.

"…this isn't simple," she said.

"I never said it was," he replied.

"Then stop acting like it is," she said.

"I'm not simplifying it," he said, "I'm accepting it."

Zein's voice lowered.

"…accepting what?" she asked.

Ace held her gaze.

"That you're staying because you want to," he said.

Zein went still.

"…that's not—"

She stopped.

Ace didn't interrupt.

"Finish it," he said.

Zein shook her head slightly.

"…I don't know how to say it," she admitted.

Ace's voice softened—not weak, just steady.

"Then don't," he said.

Zein blinked.

"…what?" she asked.

"You don't have to say everything," he said.

"Then how do you expect me to prove anything?" she asked.

"I don't," he replied.

"…then why does it feel like you do?" she said.

"Because you expect yourself to," he said.

Zein's breath slowed again.

"…that's not fair," she said.

"Neither is pretending you don't care," he replied.

Zein didn't respond immediately.

"…I didn't say I don't care," she said quietly.

Ace didn't move.

"I know," he said.

Zein frowned.

"Stop saying that," she said.

"Stop confirming it," he replied.

Zein let out a quiet breath.

"…this is exactly why I avoid things," she said.

"And yet you didn't avoid this," he said.

Zein hesitated.

"…I tried," she admitted.

"I know," he said.

"…and it didn't work," she said.

"No," he said.

A silence followed.

Not uncomfortable.

Just heavy.

"…this changes things," she said.

"Yes," he replied.

"…are you sure you're okay with that?" she asked.

Ace didn't hesitate.

"Yes," he said.

Zein's voice softened again.

"…even if it gets worse?" she asked.

"It will," he said.

Zein blinked.

"…and you're still staying?" she asked.

Ace held her gaze.

"Yes," he said.

Zein's breath slowed.

"…why?" she asked.

Ace answered immediately.

"Because you are," he said.

Zein didn't argue this time.

"…that's not a real reason," she said softly.

"It is to me," he replied.

Zein looked at him—

Really looked this time.

"…I'm not leaving," she said.

Ace nodded slightly.

"I know," he said.

Zein didn't tell him to stop saying it this time.

Because now—

She understood why he did.

And more importantly—

She didn't want him to be wrong.
