Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: The Challenge Begins

The bell rang louder than usual.

Or maybe it just felt that way.

Students poured into the assembly hall, voices clashing, excitement thick in the air. Maya walked in quietly, her fingers tightening around the strap of her bag. Something about the atmosphere felt… off.

Not excitement.

Not really.

More like anticipation.

Like everyone was waiting for something to explode.

The principal stepped onto the stage.

Silence followed immediately.

"You are all here," she began, her voice calm but carrying across the hall, "because Crestview High does not produce average students."

A few students smirked.

Others straightened.

Maya stayed still.

"You compete. You dominate. You survive."

That word again.

Survive.

Maya's stomach tightened.

"We are introducing a school-wide competition," the principal continued. "A test of intelligence, strategy, endurance, and control."

Whispers broke out instantly.

"Students will be placed into groups of five."

Maya's heart skipped.

"Each task will earn points. Individual and group performance will be recorded on the Student Board."

A screen behind her lit up.

A blank leaderboard.

Waiting.

"Only those at the top," the principal said slowly, "will be rewarded."

A pause.

Then

"Scholarships. Power positions, recommendations and privileges others won't have."

Now the room changed.

This wasn't just school anymore.

This was war.

"Groups will be announced now."

Names started appearing.

Fast.

One after the other.

Students leaned forward, searching, whispering.

Maya's eyes scanned quickly

Then stopped.

Group 7

Maya Adebayo

Kai Vance

Liam Cross

Zina Hale

Tessa Cole

Her chest tightened.

Kai.

Again.

She hadn't even processed that when

Gasps erupted nearby.

"Group 3…"

Maya glanced over.

The three girls.

All together.

And with them

Ryan.

Ethan.

Kai's friends.

Their eyes met hers.

And they smiled.

Not friendly.

Not neutral.

Hungry.

"First challenge begins tomorrow," the principal finished. "Prepare yourselves."

The hall exploded into noise.

Chairs scraping.

Voices rising.

Plans already forming.

Maya stood.

Slowly.

Trying to think.

Trying to breathe.

Then

"Look who got lucky."

Her body went still.

She didn't have to turn.

She knew.

"New girl thinks she's special now?"

Maya turned slowly.

The three girls stood in front of her.

Blocking her path.

The leader stepped closer, her eyes dragging over Maya like she was something dirty.

"Grouped with Kai?" she continued. "You must really love attention."

Maya swallowed.

"I didn't choose the group."

A sharp laugh.

"Oh, she talks."

The second girl stepped forward, snatching Maya's bag before she could react.

"Hey"

Too late.

The bag hit the floor.

Hard.

Books spilled out.

Papers scattered across the ground.

Students slowed down.

Watching.

Always watching.

"Pick it up," the third girl said sweetly, nudging a notebook with her shoe.

Maya didn't move immediately.

Her chest felt tight.

Too tight.

"Did you not hear her?" the leader snapped, stepping closer.

Then

She shoved Maya.

Not hard enough to knock her down.

But enough.

Enough to make her stumble.

Enough to make people laugh.

Low.

Ugly.

Maya bent down slowly.

Her fingers trembled as she picked up her books.

One by one.

Ignoring the heat crawling up her neck.

Ignoring the eyes.

Ignoring the whispers.

"Pathetic," one of them muttered.

Then

Something cold splashed across her back.

Maya froze.

Liquid.

Running down her uniform.

Dripping.

Laughter exploded.

"Oops," the second girl said, holding an empty bottle. "My hand slipped."

Maya didn't move.

Didn't speak.

Didn't turn.

Because if she did

She might break.

"During the competition," the leader whispered, stepping close behind her, "you're going to fail."

Maya's fingers tightened around her book.

"And when you do…" her voice dropped lower, colder, "no one will care what happens to you."

A pause.

Then softer

"Not even him."

Maya didn't need to ask who.

The girls walked away laughing.

Just like that.

Like it was nothing.

Maya stayed crouched for a second longer.

Breathing.

Slow.

Careful.

Then she stood.

And that's when she saw them.

Kai.

Ryan.

Ethan.

Standing a few feet away.

Watching.

They had seen everything.

Every second.

And they did nothing.

Kai's gaze met hers.

Cold.

Unreadable.

Then he turned and walked away.

Something inside her chest cracked.

Not loud.

Not obvious.

But deep.

The rest of the day blurred.

Voices.

Classes.

Nothing stayed.

Nothing mattered.

Until

"You."

Maya looked up.

The teacher stood at the door.

Watching her.

Too closely.

"Come with me."

Something about his voice made her stomach twist.

But she stood.

Followed.

The office door clicked shut behind them.

Loud.

Final.

Maya stayed near the door.

"I didn't do anything," she said quietly.

The teacher smiled.

Slow.

Uncomfortable.

"I didn't say you did."

He stepped closer.

Too close.

"You're new," he continued. "You need guidance."

Maya didn't move.

Didn't breathe properly.

"I'm fine."

His hand brushed her arm.

Light.

But wrong.

"Are you?" he asked softly.

Her body went rigid.

Her mind

Gone.

Back.

To hands she didn't want to remember.

To silence.

To fear.

"Maya," he said, stepping even closer, "you don't have to act strong here."

His fingers pressed slightly.

Lingering.

Maya's throat tightened.

Say something.

Move.

Do something.

But her body

Wouldn't respond.

The door suddenly opened.

Both of them turned.

Kai stood there.

Leaning against the frame.

Like he'd been there all along.

The teacher stepped back immediately.

Cleared his throat.

"Yes?"

Kai's gaze flicked from him to Maya.

Taking everything in.

Then back.

"She's needed," he said simply.

The teacher hesitated.

Then forced a smile.

"Of course."

Maya didn't wait.

She walked out.

Fast.

Not looking back.

The hallway felt colder.

Or maybe she did.

Night came too quickly.

Or not quickly enough.

Maya pushed the hostel door open.

Silence.

Too quiet.

She stepped inside.

Paused.

Something was wrong.

Then she saw it.

Her bed.

Destroyed.

Sheets pulled off.

Clothes scattered.

Her bag dumped open again.

Her chest tightened.

Slow.

Heavy.

"They said it was just the beginning."

Maya turned.

The three girls stood at the door.

Smiling.

Watching.

Enjoying it.

"You really thought today was bad?" the leader asked softly.

Maya didn't speak.

Didn't move.

"Tomorrow will be worse."

They left.

Just like that.

Maya stood there.

Alone.

Again.

Her hands slowly curled into fists.

Her breathing uneven.

Her chest tight.

Too tight.

Later that night

She couldn't sleep.

Wouldn't sleep.

So she left.

Quietly.

Stepping into the dark hallway.

That's when she heard it.

Voices.

Low.

Urgent.

Outside.

Maya moved closer to the window.

Careful.

Slow.

And then

She saw it.

Students.

Two of them.

Dragging someone.

Struggling.

Bleeding.

Her breath caught.

And then

Another figure stepped into view.

Calm.

Watching.

In control.

Kai.

Maya's heart slammed.

This time

There was no confusion.

No doubt.

No curiosity.

Only one clear, terrifying truth

She wasn't just in a school.

She was inside something much worse.

And it had already started.
