Chapter 1 - SHADOWS OF SEOUL

Chapter 1

Seoul never slept.

It shimmered with a vibrant energy.

From the tall glass buildings to the neon streets, the city pulsed like a living heartbeat - fast, dangerous, intoxicating. Standing twenty-three floors above the chaos was Yura Han, trying to calm the storm in her chest.

The wind tugged at her soft beige dress, lifting strands of her long, dark hair into the night air. She should have felt small against the vast skyline, but she didn't.

Not tonight.

Tonight, she stood on the edge of something that couldn't be undone.

Behind her, the glass doors slid open.

She didn't turn, but she felt his presence.

"You shouldn't be out here alone," he said, his voice low and controlled, with a hint of danger beneath the surface.

Yura closed her eyes for a brief moment before turning to face him.

And there he was - Jae-min Park.

In a tailored black suit, no tie, and his collar slightly open, he exuded an air of confidence. His dark hair fell effortlessly across his forehead, framing a face sculpted with precision. But it was his sharp, unreadable eyes that made people step back without knowing why.

He wasn't just powerful - he embodied power.

"You followed me," she said, her voice steady, even as her heart began to race.

"I noticed you left," he replied, stepping closer. "There's a difference."

Yura let out a quiet breath and turned back toward the city.

"Parties like that... they suffocate me," she said.

Behind her, she heard his footsteps - slow and deliberate.

"You didn't seem suffocated," he said. "You had half the room watching you."

She let out a soft, humorless laugh.

"They weren't watching me - they were watching your future business partner's daughter."

The silence that followed was palpable.

Then, he spoke - "I wasn't."

That made her turn to face him.

He was closer now, too close.

Close enough that she saw the tension in his jaw, and close enough to notice his gaze linger on her face, as if trying to read something deeper.

"What were you watching, then?" she asked quietly.

His eyes dropped briefly to her lips before returning to hers.

"You," he said, the word landing heavier than it should have.

Yura swallowed, feeling a sense of danger.

Not just because of who he was, but because of what she felt when he looked at her like that - like she mattered.

"You don't even know me," she said, softer now.

"I know enough," he replied.

"And what exactly is that?" she asked.

Jae-min stepped even closer, his presence overwhelming.

Too close.

Now, there was barely any space between them. The city lights flickered behind him, casting shadows across his face.

"I know you hate pretending," he said quietly. "You're only here because your father expects it." He paused. "And I know you've been trying to leave that ballroom for the past hour."

Yura blinked, surprised.

"How -" she started to ask.

"I pay attention," he said.

Her heart stumbled, and for a moment, neither spoke. The tension stretched, electric and undeniable.

"You shouldn't be paying attention to me," she whispered.

"Why not?" he asked.

"Because..." She hesitated, then forced the words out. "People like you don't get involved with people like me."

Something shifted in his expression, a hint of something darker.

"And what kind of person am I?" he asked.

Yura held his gaze, her pulse racing.

"You're the kind of man people don't say no to," she said.

"And you?" he asked, his voice dropping lower.

She hesitated.

"I'm the kind of person who should," she replied.

A flicker of something dangerous crossed his eyes.

Then, slowly, he reached up, his hand brushing her hair, tucking a loose strand behind her ear. His gentleness didn't match the intensity of everything else about him.

"You should go back inside," she whispered, though she didn't move.

"You want me to?" he asked.

She didn't answer, because the truth was - she didn't.

The city roared below them, but up here, everything felt still, focused on the two of them.

Jae-min's hand moved to rest lightly at the side of her neck, warm, steady, and possessive, but not forceful - a question, not a demand.

Yura's breath came shallow.

"This is a bad idea," she said, barely audible.

"I know," he replied.

"Then why -" she started to ask.

"Because I don't stop when something feels right," he said.

Her heart pounded harder.

"This doesn't feel right," she insisted.

His thumb brushed gently against her skin.

"Yes, it does," he said.

The silence that followed was dangerous, heavy with unspoken tension.

Then, a voice shattered the moment - "Yura!"

She pulled back, her body stiffening as she turned toward the glass doors.

Her father stood inside, watching.

And suddenly, everything came crashing back - reality, expectations, consequences.

She stepped away from Jae-min, her pulse racing for a different reason now.

"This can't happen," she said quickly, avoiding his eyes.

"Why?" he asked, sharper this time.

"You know why," she replied.

His jaw tightened.

"I don't care about business deals," he said.

"Well, I do," she snapped, then softened. "My father does. If he sees this - if anyone sees this -"

"They'll what?" he pressed. "Talk?"

"They'll destroy me," she said, the words landing heavy.

That made him go still, a flicker of hesitation crossing his face.

Yura took a step back, then another.

"This was a mistake," she said, her voice trembling despite her effort to stay strong. "We shouldn't have even -"

"Yura," he said, his voice stopping her.

She looked at him, and for a moment, everything she was about to say disappeared.

Because he looked - different, not untouchable, not in control, just real.

"This isn't over," he said quietly.

Her chest tightened.

"It has to be," she replied.

"It won't be," he said, something in his tone making her believe him.

That scared her more than anything.

Yura turned and walked back inside, but even as the doors closed behind her, she could still feel his touch.

And deep down, she knew - that night hadn't ended anything, it had just begun.
