Selene did not wait until the next day
The message from the shadowy figure burned in her mind Every word deliberate every pause a threat
She knew what she had to do
The docks were quiet but alive with hidden movement The mist rolled low over the water hiding shapes and edges
Selene's steps were careful but confident
She could feel them watching
Measuring
Judging
She reached the edge where the figure had appeared before
The water lapped softly against the pier but she felt the tension like an electric charge
Then movement
Quick shadow across the mist
Selene spun
A figure emerged
Tall silent masked by shadows
"Selene Marlowe" the voice was low calm almost amused
"I told you not to come alone"
Selene's eyes narrowed
"And I told you I do not listen to warnings"
The figure circled slowly keeping distance
"Bold" the voice said
Selene mirrored the movement keeping her focus sharp
"Useful" she added finally
The figure paused
"What do you want from me" Selene asked
"Not what you think" the voice replied
"Then explain" she demanded
A pause
"Control" the figure said
Selene blinked slightly
"Control of what"
"The game" the figure said simply
Her mind raced
The system had layers she did not understand yet
"This is about Marcus" she said slowly
"Partly" the figure admitted
"And what else"
Silence
The mist shifted
"You are inside now" the voice said finally
"Inside what"
"The structure"
Selene's eyes narrowed
"You mean the web of influence Lucien showed me"
The figure nodded
"You have made a ripple" the figure said quietly
"Ripples have consequences"
Selene's gaze hardened
"I expected that"
A sudden movement in the shadows drew her attention
The figure smiled faintly
"Good" the voice said
"Because you need to understand what it feels like to be watched to be tested to be pushed"
Selene's body tensed
The figure stepped closer just enough to be dangerous but not revealing its identity
"You want answers" the voice continued
"I do not want tricks" Selene said calmly
A faint chuckle
"Tricks are everywhere"
"And so are choices" Selene replied
Another pause
Then the figure moved back into the mist
"Tonight you will sleep but not rest"
Selene did not flinch
"Why" she asked
"Because the system never sleeps and neither should you if you want to survive"
The figure vanished completely
Selene stood alone on the pier
The mist swallowed the shapes leaving only the cold night and her own measured breaths
Her mind was racing but clear
This was the first confrontation but not the last
Someone had made the first move
But Selene had seen them
Measured them
Understood part of their strength
She would not be surprised again
Her phone buzzed
Lucien
"They have reached out. You survived. Now watch."
Selene smiled faintly
She had expected danger and yet it sharpened her focus
The system had begun its game
But she was ready to play
And she knew
This confrontation was only the beginning
The shadows were moving
But so was she
