The questions followed them all week. Not constantly. Not every second of every day. But they were there. Quiet. Persistent. Impossible to completely ignore. Mia kept catching herself smiling at messages Aiden sent. Aiden kept finding reasons to look for Mia in crowded hallways. Neither thought much of it at first. After all, they'd been dating for months. It made sense to miss each other. It made sense to enjoy spending time together. But lately, things felt different. Stronger somehow. The feelings that had once seemed simple were becoming harder to explain. Which was exactly why both of them avoided thinking about it too much. Unfortunately, life had other plans. Friday arrived with unusually nice weather, and after school, a large group of students decided to hang out at a small park near town. It wasn't anything special. Just a place with benches, walking paths, and a lake in the middle. By the time Aiden and Mia arrived, Noah and Sophie were already there. Along with several other friends. For the first hour everything was normal. People talked. Laughed. Took photos. Made fun of Noah. Mostly Noah. Then, somehow, the conversation turned toward relationships.
The worst possible topic.
Naturally.
"So," Sophie said, looking far too interested, "what's the most romantic thing someone's ever done for you?"
Several people answered. One girl talked about flowers. Another talked about handwritten letters. Someone else mentioned a surprise birthday party. Then Sophie turned toward Mia. Mia immediately knew she was in danger.
"No."
"I didn't even ask yet."
"No."
"Fine."
Sophie smiled.
"What's the sweetest thing Aiden has done for you?"
The group immediately became interested. Aiden nearly groaned. Mia looked between them. Then at Aiden. Then back at everyone else.
"I don't know."
"That's a lie."
"It isn't."
"It is."
Mia sighed. Then thought about it. The answer came surprisingly quickly.
"When I fell during sports day."
The group looked confused.
"What?"
Mia smiled slightly.
"I tripped during a relay race."
"Oh."
"And before anyone else reacted, he was already running toward me."
Several people turned toward Aiden.
He looked embarrassed.
"It wasn't a big deal."
"It was to me."
For a second, neither looked away. Noah immediately pointed.
"There."
"There what?"
"That."
Nobody knew what he meant.
Except Sophie. Unfortunately.
"Oh."
"Oh?"
"Oh."
Aiden hated both of them.
The conversation moved on eventually, but something had changed. Not around the group. Around Aiden and Mia. The memory lingered. The way she'd smiled when she talked about it lingered. The way he'd looked at her lingered. Neither mentioned it. Neither knew how to. Later, as the sun began setting, the group slowly started heading home. One by one, people left until only Aiden, Mia, Noah, and Sophie remained. They walked along the lake together, talking about random things. School. Movies. Weekend plans. The usual. Eventually, Noah and Sophie fell behind. Deliberately. Very deliberately.
"We should probably catch up."
"We're literally walking."
"We should walk faster."
Before either Aiden or Mia could respond, the two traitors disappeared ahead. Leaving them alone. Again. Neither seemed surprised anymore.
"They planned that."
"Definitely."
"They're not subtle."
"Not even a little."
Mia laughed. Aiden smiled.
For a few moments, they simply walked beside each other. Comfortable. Easy. Familiar. The lake reflected the orange colors of the sunset, and a cool breeze drifted across the water. It was quiet. Peaceful. The kind of moment that felt important even when nothing was happening.
Then Mia spoke.
"You know something?"
"What?"
"I'm glad we had that argument."
Aiden blinked.
"What?"
"I know it sounds weird."
"It sounds very weird."
Mia laughed.
Then looked out across the water.
"I hated it."
"Good."
"Thanks."
"You're welcome."
Mia rolled her eyes.
Then continued.
"But after we made up..."
She paused.
Aiden waited.
"...it felt different."
His heart immediately became interested in the conversation.
"Different how?"
Mia hesitated. And for the first time in a long time, she looked nervous.
"I don't know."
Aiden understood that feeling. Because lately he'd been feeling the exact same thing. Neither spoke for several seconds. The silence wasn't awkward. Just full. Like both of them were standing on the edge of something. Neither quite ready to step forward. Finally, Aiden smiled.
"I think I know what you mean."
Mia looked at him.
"Yeah?"
"Yeah."
For a moment, everything else disappeared. The lake. The sunset. The sounds around them. It all faded into the background. Neither looked away. Neither seemed capable of it. Slowly, almost without realizing it, they stopped walking. Standing there, only a few feet apart. Close enough to hear each other breathe. Close enough to notice every tiny expression. Aiden's heart was pounding. Mia's wasn't doing much better. It felt like something was about to happen.
Then-
"THERE THEY ARE!"
Both jumped. Immediately. Completely. Noah came sprinting back toward them with Sophie right behind him.
"We lost you guys!"
"You were thirty feet away!"
"Still counts!"
The moment shattered instantly. Gone. Destroyed. Ruined. Aiden stared at Noah. Noah stared back. Completely unaware. Mia covered her face because she was trying very hard not to laugh. And somehow... That made everything even worse. Because despite the interruption... Despite the ruined moment... Despite Noah existing... Neither of them could stop smiling. And that was probably a sign of something. A very big something.
