Chapter 4 - chapter 4: Rules of the Marriage

📖 The CEO Contract Bride

Morning came quietly.

Not the kind of morning Tessa was used to—where alarms rang, neighbors made noise, and the outside world rushed in before she was ready.

Here, morning arrived gently.

Soft light filtered through thick curtains, spreading across the large room in a calm, golden tone.

Tessa stirred slightly, her eyes opening slowly as she adjusted to her surroundings.

For a brief moment, she didn't remember where she was.

Then it came back.

The contract.

The mansion.

The CEO.

This new life.

She sat up on the bed, resting her hands against the sheets as she looked around the room.

Everything was still in place.

Perfectly arranged.

Unchanged.

Yet her reality had changed completely.

"This is real," she whispered to herself.

---

She stood up and walked toward the window.

Outside, the grounds stretched wide and quiet. A few staff members moved in the distance, maintaining the property with silent efficiency.

It felt like a separate world.

A world that operated without chaos.

Without unpredictability.

Unlike hers before.

---

Tessa turned away from the window and walked toward the mirror.

She studied her reflection carefully.

Same face.

Same eyes.

But something about her expression had shifted.

There was awareness now.

Responsibility.

Uncertainty—but also quiet determination.

"If I'm going to stay here," she muttered softly, "I need to understand how everything works."

---

A knock interrupted her thoughts.

"Come in."

The door opened slightly, and a maid stepped in respectfully.

"Good morning, ma'am. Breakfast will be served shortly."

Tessa nodded.

"Alright. Thank you."

The maid bowed and left without another word.

---

Tessa moved to the wardrobe and selected something simple but presentable.

She wasn't entirely sure what the expectations were yet—but she assumed appearance mattered in this environment.

After changing, she took a final look at herself in the mirror.

"Calm
 and composed," she said quietly.

---

When she stepped out of her room and walked downstairs, the mansion felt just as it had the previous day.

Quiet.

Structured.

Almost silent enough to hear her own thoughts echo.

She followed the familiar path to the dining area.

And as expected

He was already there.

---

The CEO sat at the head of the long dining table, reviewing something on his tablet.

Same posture.

Same focus.

Uninterrupted.

He didn't look up immediately.

Tessa paused briefly at the entrance, then walked in and took her seat.

Not too close.

Not too far.

The same position as before.

---

Breakfast was served shortly after she sat down.

Steam rose gently from the food as the staff moved in and out of the room with quiet precision.

No unnecessary words.

No distractions.

Just service.

---

For a few moments, neither of them spoke.

Tessa observed him quietly.

There was something consistent about him.

He seemed unaffected by environment, time, or presence.

As if everything around him adjusted to him—not the other way around.

---

Finally, Tessa spoke.

"I've been thinking."

He didn't look up immediately.

"About what?"

She hesitated briefly.

"About how this arrangement actually works day to day."

That caught his attention.

He lowered his tablet and looked at her.

---

"Go on."

Tessa leaned slightly forward.

"I understand the public part. Events. Appearances. Meetings."

She paused.

"But what about everything in between? What am I supposed to do while living here?"

---

He studied her for a moment before responding.

"You are not confined."

Tessa blinked slightly.

"I'm not?"

"No."

She tilted her head.

"That's surprising."

---

He set his tablet aside completely now, giving her his full attention.

"You have autonomy within defined boundaries."

Tessa repeated slowly, "Defined boundaries
"

"Yes."

"And those boundaries are
?"

---

He responded in a calm, structured tone.

"You will not interfere with my work. You will not disclose private matters. You will maintain the appearance of this marriage when required. Beyond that, your time is your own."

Tessa processed his words carefully.

"So I can leave the house? Work? Study?"

"If you choose to."

---

She leaned back slightly, surprised.

"I expected more restrictions."

His gaze remained steady.

"This is not imprisonment. It is a contract."

That word again.

Contract.

Not relationship.

Not marriage.

Contract.

---

Tessa nodded slowly.

"Alright
 that makes things clearer."

She paused briefly, then asked another question.

"And boundaries between us personally?"

---

His expression remained unchanged, but his tone became slightly more precise.

"Physical proximity is acceptable in public contexts. In private, it should remain minimal unless required."

Tessa raised a brow slightly.

"Minimal
 as in?"

---

"Respect for personal space," he clarified.

She nodded.

"Got it."

A brief silence followed.

---

Then Tessa asked something she had been curious about since arriving.

"And emotional boundaries?"

His eyes narrowed slightly—not in discomfort, but in thought.

"Explain."

---

She chose her words carefully.

"Are we expected to
act like a couple privately too? Or is it only for appearances?"

He answered without hesitation.

"Only for appearances."

---

The answer was straightforward.

But for some reason, it carried a subtle weight.

Tessa nodded again.

"Understood."

---

She picked up her cup and took a small sip, letting the information settle.

There was a structure here.

Clear.

Defined.

Predictable.

Exactly the kind of environment she needed to navigate carefully.

---

After a moment, the CEO spoke again.

"You will also be required to attend events occasionally."

Tessa looked up.

"Tonight included?"

"Yes."

She sighed lightly.

"That's becoming a pattern."

---

He stood up from his seat.

"You'll get used to it."

Tessa watched as he adjusted his jacket slightly.

Then she asked one more question.

"Do you attend these events because of business
 or because of appearances?"

He paused briefly.

"Both."

---

That answer made sense.

Everything he did seemed to serve a purpose.

Nothing wasted.

Nothing random.

---

"Be ready by evening," he added.

Tessa nodded.

"Alright."

---

He began walking toward the exit of the dining area.

Tessa remained seated for a moment after he left, thinking through everything they had discussed.

Rules.

Boundaries.

Expectations.

Freedom within structure.

---

This wasn't the kind of marriage people dreamed about.

But it was functional.

And for now
 that was enough.

---

She finished her meal and stood up.

Instead of returning to her room immediately, she walked slowly through part of the mansion, observing it more carefully this time.

The halls were clean and quiet.

Staff moved respectfully, acknowledging her presence without intrusion.

Everything had order.

Everything had discipline.

---

Tessa stopped near one of the large windows overlooking the outside grounds.

She placed her hand lightly against the glass.

"This is a different life," she thought.

Not better.

Not worse.

Just different.

---

Her phone buzzed again.

She checked the message.

"Driver will arrive at 6 PM."

Same pattern.

Same instruction.

No details.

No context.

---

Tessa locked her phone and took a slow breath.

"Alright," she said quietly to herself.

"If this is the path I chose
 then I'll walk it properly."

---

Outside, the day continued as usual.

Inside, Tessa was slowly adapting to a life governed by structure, expectation, and quiet discipline.

And somewhere in that process

She was no longer just a visitor in this world.

She was beginning to become part of it.
