Chapter 10 - The First Day of the Exchange

The grand central arena of Azure Cloud Preparatory Academy had never looked more majestic — or more intimidating.

Huge banners of four different colors fluttered in the cold mountain wind: deep blue and silver for Azure Cloud, crimson for Crimson Peak Academy, flowing silver for Silver River Academy, and radiant gold for Golden Summit Academy.

Thousands of students filled the tiered seating surrounding the massive circular combat platform. Elders and instructors from all four academies sat on elevated platforms, their powerful auras creating a heavy, oppressive pressure in the air.

This was the Azure Cloud Exchange — the first major stage where the Azure Six would truly test themselves against the outside world.

The opening ceremony had been grand. Speeches about friendship, competition, and the future of the kingdom's cultivation world. But everyone knew the truth: this was a battlefield in disguise. Resources, reputation, and opportunities would go to the victors.

The Azure Six stood together in their designated waiting area, wearing matching blue-and-silver combat uniforms. The atmosphere around them crackled with nervous energy.

Ryan flexed his hands, fire qi flickering around his fists. "This is it. Time to show the other academies what real talent looks like."

Jake grinned, spinning his light sword. "Just don't go charging in like a mad bull. We have a plan, remember?"

Lily leaned against Jake playfully, her illusion orb sparkling in her hands. "I'm ready to make them see double… or triple. This is going to be so much fun!"

Emily stood calmly, her gentle golden qi already circulating subtly around the group, keeping everyone's condition optimal. Her eyes occasionally drifted toward Ryan with quiet affection.

Sophia remained silent and composed, her snow-white hair tied back neatly. Her dark blue eyes scanned the opposing teams with cold calculation. She stood close to Marcus, their shoulders almost touching.

Marcus felt the vast, ancient darkness inside him humming steadily, like an endless abyss waiting beneath still waters. The black jade pendant was warm against his chest. "We stick to the plan," he said quietly. "Observe first, then dominate. Together."

The first event of the day was individual preliminary matches to determine seeding for the team competitions.

Ryan was called up early.

He stepped into the arena against a tall boy from Crimson Peak Academy. The moment the match began, Ryan exploded forward with raw power. His fire sword qi blazed brightly, forcing his opponent on the defensive. After a fierce exchange filled with explosive clashes and roaring flames, Ryan won decisively.

The crowd cheered. Ryan returned to the group with a wide grin, pumping his fist. "One down!"

Emily's match came next. She wasn't a frontline fighter, but the individual rounds included support category evaluations. She faced a healer from Silver River and outperformed her by a noticeable margin — her golden arcana was purer, more efficient, and more versatile. The judges nodded in approval.

Jake and Lily both performed well in their respective matches, showcasing speed and creative illusion tactics that impressed many observers.

Sophia's match was the most anticipated so far.

She faced a fast dagger user from Golden Summit. The arena fell into hushed silence as Sophia moved like a winter phantom. Her Phantom Steps combined with the snowy environment made her nearly untraceable. The match ended in under forty seconds with a precise strike to her opponent's vital points. Even the elders murmured among themselves.

When Marcus's name was called, the arena grew even quieter.

His opponent was a well-known wind-attributed swordsman from Crimson Peak — aggressive and highly ranked among first-years.

The moment the signal sounded, Marcus moved.

He didn't charge forward. Instead, he slipped into the long shadows cast by the arena pillars and the overhead banners. The vast darkness within him responded instantly. He faded from sight, reappearing only to strike from blind spots with precise, controlled attacks. His opponent grew increasingly frustrated, swinging at empty air while Marcus dismantled his rhythm.

The match ended with Marcus's sword resting lightly against his opponent's throat.

The referee declared, "Marcus Kane wins!"

A wave of surprised murmurs swept through the crowd. Many had underestimated the "Grade 4" student from the border town. Now they were paying attention.

As Marcus returned to his group, Sophia gave him the smallest nod of approval. Ryan slapped him on the back. Emily smiled warmly. Jake and Lily cheered enthusiastically.

The individual rounds continued throughout the morning. By midday, the Azure Six had all advanced with strong performances, earning them favorable seeding for the upcoming team battles.

During the lunch break, the six of them gathered in a quiet corner of the spectator stands, sharing food and discussing strategy.

Lily was buzzing with excitement. "Did you see their faces when Marcus disappeared? They looked so confused!"

Jake laughed. "Our team composition is nasty. Power, speed, illusions, healing, assassination, and shadows. We're built differently."

Ryan was still riding the high of his victory but kept glancing at Sophia. "We should show them something special in the team rounds. Maybe coordinate a big combo move."

Sophia remained calm. "We reveal only what's necessary. The less they understand about us, the better."

Emily nodded in agreement, quietly passing out spirit fruits she had prepared. "We support each other. That's our real strength."

Marcus looked at his five companions, feeling a deep sense of belonging. "No matter what happens today, we fight as one."

The afternoon session brought the first official team battles.

The Azure Six were matched against a strong team from Silver River Academy in the second round.

The arena buzzed with anticipation as both teams stepped onto the platform.

The Silver River team was well-balanced and experienced — two strong attackers, a speed specialist, a ranged arcana user, and a defender. They looked confident.

The match began.

Ryan and Jake charged forward as the frontline, creating an explosive opening. Lily immediately layered powerful illusions across the battlefield, making phantom copies of the Azure Six appear and disappear. Sophia vanished into the chaos using Phantom Step. Emily maintained perfect support from the backline.

Marcus became the decisive factor.

He moved through the shadows created by Lily's illusions and the arena structures, striking from positions the opponents couldn't predict. His darkness affinity allowed him to create small domains of deepened shadow that disrupted enemy coordination.

The synergy was overwhelming.

Within four minutes, the Silver River team was completely dismantled. The Azure Six won with an overwhelming advantage and almost no injuries.

The crowd erupted in cheers. Even some elders from the other academies looked impressed.

As they stepped off the platform, Victor Kane watched from the sidelines with pure hatred in his eyes.

The day continued with more matches. The Azure Six won every round they participated in, steadily climbing the rankings. Their unique team composition and growing chemistry drew more and more attention.

By the time the first day of the Exchange ended, the Azure Six had secured a strong position for the next stages.

As the sun set behind the mountains, painting the snow in shades of orange and purple, the six of them stood together on a high balcony overlooking the arena.

Ryan was pumped. "We dominated today! Tomorrow is going to be even better!"

Lily was already planning new illusion combinations with Jake, their playful energy infectious.

Emily remained the quiet pillar of support, happy to see everyone thriving.

Sophia stood close to Marcus, her shoulder brushing his. "We did well," she said softly.

"But this is only the beginning."

Marcus nodded, feeling the ancient darkness inside him pulse with quiet approval. "We keep growing. Together."

That night, back in his room, the dream returned once more.

The first day of the Exchange was over.

Many more challenges awaited.

But the Azure Six were ready.
