Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: NightWatch Duos

[Felicia's POV]

"Crazy how we were both bitten by some strange spider."

"I know."

Gwen was dressed in a proper suit this time. Seems she was working on it behind the scenes.

"By the way." The two of us were sitting on top of a building, our legs dangling over a three-hundred-foot drop as we admired the city lights below. We were just waiting for something to come through the earpiece, the cold wind whistling through the gaps in the rooftop vents. "You and Peter?"

"Absolutely not." Her rejection was instant. I wasn't sure what Peter did, but whatever it was, it left an impression.

"Hehehe~ I didn't even say anything."

"I knew where you were going."

Shrugging, I couldn't help but giggle more. "Why? My jokes earlier aside, I actually think you two would be a good couple."

"I'd much rather your jokes come true than be with him. Sharing Julius with you was much better than being with Peter."

"Whoa?! How dare you think you actually get a piece of my boyfriend!" I shouted with an exaggerated grab of my chest.

"I-I don't, I'm just saying..."

"Alright. I don't mind sharing since you're so honest."

"W-What? I don't want to, I'm just..."

"You know Julius is huge down there. I don't think I can handle him by myself..."

"S-Shut up! I don't want your boyfriend, I was just saying he's better than Peter!" Gwen clutched her head, her gloved fingers digging into her blonde hair where it spilt out from the back of her cowl. She was probably trying to get the image I painted out of her head, her face likely a brilliant shade of crimson under that mask.

My amusement was at an all-time high.

"Well, my offer still stands. I'm really serious when I say I might need the help. Having one extra person to share that burden would be nice."

"Oh. My. God. Shut up!" She stomped her foot with a sharp finger pointing at me.

"Attention units, we have a gang war happening down 66th Avenue." The dispatcher interrupted our bickering at the perfect time.

I stood up with a satisfying stretch, feeling the vertebrae in my spine pop one by one. "Let's go, partner!"

Gwen groaned but followed after me. The two of us jumped off the building, feeling the adrenaline from the fall. Perfectly timed webs shooting forth as we swung in unison.

'Pfft~, teasing her is so fun!'

..

.

The two of us arrived on the scene and immediately got to work.

"I got left, you get right?" I said to my cute little friend.

"Sure."

I shot two webs, taking one to change trajectory and kicking one of the purple gang members into a wall, knocking him out instantly. The whole area broke out into a panic with our arrival.

Landing on the ground, I twirled and danced, putting my dexterity to use. The bastards couldn't keep up with me.

"Sorry~"

With one dance, I knocked out three, the heels of my boots connecting with jaws and solar plexuses in a blur. This honestly felt more like a warm-up session than a gang fight.

'Duck!'

Bang! Bang! Bang!

The heat of the bullets whizzed past my ear, striking the asphalt where I had been standing just a millisecond before. My right hand moved, shooting webs to seal the hands of the shooter.

"Damn it!" he cursed. Luckily for him, his friend came with the assist.

"Stupid bitch!"

A massive fist came at me, accompanied by the foul stench of cheap cigarettes and vulgar words. There was really no reason for him to curse me like that!

"Ouch~ a girl has feelings, you know?"

Side-stepping with an effortless grace, I jabbed the big guy in his side with all the strength I could muster. I felt the impact vibrate up my arm as his large frame shot toward the green gang across from me like a 300-pound bowling ball.

"Ghosty, I sent some help!"

"What?"

The big guy got a perfect strike, the sound of colliding bodies echoing through the street.

"Nice shot," was all Gwen managed to say.

'I wonder how deadpan she is under her mask?'

I put the curiosity behind me, responding to her kind words. But the urge to know what her face looked like under her mask was so strong.

"Thank you. Thank you."

A strong warning came—a sharp prick at the base of my neck. My body moved instinctively, twisting like a snake as a blade grazed the air where my ribs had been.

"That was close." I joked. The bastard didn't seem to think it was funny, though.

"Tch. Stay still, you whore."

"No, no. I have a hubby, you know? How can I be a whore!"

I kicked the bastard in his stomach, the air leaving his lungs in a wheeze as froth bubbled at the corners of his mouth. I'll admit I put a bit more power into that kick than I should have, the force of it sending him several feet across the pavement.

'Huh? That's it?'

The cleanup was quicker than I thought it would be.

Turning around, I waved over at Gwen, who had just finished tying her targets up. The flickering red and blue lights of the police cars were already reflecting off the puddles in the distance.

"Tie them already!"

Gwen really ran a tight ship.

"Fine. Fine," I said while raising my arms in surrender.

The distant wail of sirens grew into a deafening roar as we finished putting both piles of gang members side by side for easy access.

"FREEZE!"

Gwen and I just shrugged. The cops' reactions to us didn't matter. We were simply helping the city in our own way. We shot webs at a nearby building and continued our night watch together, leaving the ungrateful bastards behind.

'Can't wait to see hubby~'

I couldn't wait to tell him the stories we made tonight; my heart really couldn't get enough of his warmth.
