Chapter 1 - WHAT IS CRICKET ?

Cricket is more than just a sport; it is a game of strategy, patience, and skill that has evolved over centuries into a global phenomenon. Often referred to as a "gentleman's game," it is played between two teams of 11 players each on a field centered around a rectangular pitch.

1. The Field and Equipment

The game is played on an oval-shaped grass field. At the center is a 22-yard (20.12 meters) long pitch. At each end of the pitch stands a wicket, which consists of three wooden posts (stumps) topped by two small wooden pieces (bails).

Essential Gear:

The Bat: A flat wooden blade, usually made of willow.

The Ball: A hard, leather-covered ball with a cork core.

Protective Gear: Including helmets, pads, and gloves to protect players from the hard ball.

2. Core Gameplay: Batting and Bowling

The primary objective is for one team to score more runs than the opponents.

Bowling: One player (the bowler) throws the ball toward the wicket at the opposite end, attempting to hit the stumps or force the batter into a mistake. An over consists of six legal deliveries by the bowler.

Batting: The batter defends the wicket and attempts to hit the ball into open spaces to score runs.

Fielding: The remaining 10 players of the bowling team spread across the field to stop the ball, catch it, or run out the batters.

3. How Runs are Scored

Runs are the currency of cricket. They can be scored in several ways:

Running: After hitting the ball, the two batters run to the opposite ends of the pitch. Each successful crossing equals one run.

Boundaries: * 4 Runs: If the ball touches the ground before hitting or crossing the boundary rope.

6 Runs: If the ball crosses the boundary without touching the ground (a "maximum").

4. Dismissals (Getting "Out")

The batting team's "innings" continues until 10 of their 11 players are dismissed. Common ways to get out include:

Bowled: The ball hits and breaks the wicket.

Caught: A fielder catches the ball before it touches the ground.

LBW (Leg Before Wicket): The ball hits the batter's leg in a way that the umpire deems it would have hit the stumps.

Run Out: A fielder hits the stumps with the ball while the batter is outside their "crease" (safe zone).

5. Major Formats of the Game

Cricket is unique because it is played in three distinct formats:

Test Cricket: The oldest form, lasting up to five days. It is considered the ultimate test of a player's skill.

One Day International (ODI): Each team gets 50 overs. These matches usually last about 8 hours.

Twenty20 (T20): A fast-paced version where each team gets 20 overs. It is known for high scores and intense action, popularized by leagues like the IPL.
