Chapter 20 - Chapter 20 — Extending the Structure

Movement through the jungle had become something he could maintain without dedicating all of his attention to it, which allowed him to observe more deliberately as he advanced. The terrain shifted gradually as he moved further from the area he had been hunting in, with the density of growth increasing in some directions while opening slightly in others. These were not random variations. Over time, they formed a pattern that suggested zones rather than a single uniform environment, and that realization changed how he chose his path.

If the jungle was divided into areas, then each area likely supported different levels of creatures. That aligned with what he had already seen. Weaker creatures clustered in certain regions, while stronger ones appeared more frequently in others. The difficulty was not just finding them, but entering those areas without drawing too much attention too quickly.

He adjusted his movement slightly, angling toward a region where the ground rose unevenly and the vegetation thickened around exposed root systems. The terrain here required more control, but that worked in his favor. Larger creatures would lose efficiency in tighter spaces, while his own movement remained stable due to Grace and Silent Step working together with his Secretion Carapace.

A small creature crossed his path, and he ignored it.

That decision felt natural now. The biomass it would provide was not worth the interruption, and more importantly, it would not contribute meaningfully to his next objective. He had already confirmed the pattern of diminishing returns, and there was no benefit in repeating that test.

Instead, he continued forward, scanning for something more appropriate.

A presence shifted ahead, heavier than the smaller creatures but not as intense as the one that had forced him to evolve. That range had proven to be optimal. It carried enough value to justify the effort without immediately forcing a prolonged engagement.

He slowed slightly and began to observe.

The creature moved with controlled pacing, its awareness extending outward in intervals that were consistent enough to map. With Cognitive Acceleration, the process required less time than before. He no longer needed multiple cycles to understand the pattern. One pass was enough to establish timing and openings.

He moved when the pattern allowed it.

The distance closed without drawing attention, and when he struck, the Locking Claws engaged immediately, stabilizing the contact. The Piercing Stinger followed, driving through at an angle that avoided the denser parts of the creature's structure.

The creature resisted.

Not enough to break free, but enough to require adjustment.

He shifted his position slightly, maintaining pressure rather than disengaging, and struck again. The second strike ended it.

He released and consumed it.

Biomass Gained: +5

Total Biomass: 43

He remained still for a moment, not because he needed to, but because he was already evaluating the next step.

He had enough.

More than enough.

The system responded as he focused inward.

Mutable Structures:

Secretion Carapace (+5)

Piercing Stinger (+5)

Silent Step Legs (+5)

Locking Claws (+5)

Stabilized Core (+5)

A new option appeared beneath the existing structure.

Advanced Enhancement Available

Extend existing structure beyond +5

Unlock second specialization at +10

That changed the system significantly.

Previously, +5 had been the threshold for transformation. Now there was another layer beyond it, one that likely required the same structured investment as before.

He selected a structure.

Piercing Stinger — Enhancement Available

+6 → Cost 6 Biomass

+7 → Cost 7 Biomass

+8 → Cost 8 Biomass

+9 → Cost 9 Biomass

+10 → Cost 10 Biomass

Total Cost for +10 (from +5): 40 Biomass

The cost was higher.

Not just incrementally, but meaningfully.

That implied a similar increase in value.

He considered the alternatives briefly, but the conclusion came quickly. The Piercing Stinger had remained central to every successful engagement. Even when fights became more complex, it was still the deciding factor.

Improving it further would reduce the number of interactions required to end a fight.

That remained the most efficient path.

He committed.

Piercing Stinger Increased: +6 → +7 → +8 → +9 → +10

Biomass Cost: 40

Remaining Biomass: 3

The change was immediate and more pronounced than previous upgrades.

The structure of the stinger refined further, becoming more aligned with the force it delivered. It did not simply become sharper. It became more efficient in how it transferred that force, reducing loss on impact and improving penetration against denser structures.

The sensation was clearer than before.

More defined.

Then the system responded again.

Second Specialization Available — Piercing Stinger (+10)

Phase Piercing

Partial bypass of physical resistance

Resonance Strike

Internal damage amplification after penetration

Adaptive Tip

Automatic adjustment to target density

Extended Reach

Increased strike distance

Multi-Strike Channeling

Rapid consecutive strikes with reduced delay

He did not choose immediately.

The options required evaluation in relation to his current structure.

Phase Piercing would reduce resistance further, but the Piercing Stinger had already solved most of that limitation. Adaptive Tip provided flexibility, but not necessarily increased effectiveness. Extended Reach could create safer engagements, but his current approach relied on controlled proximity.

Resonance Strike increased damage after penetration.

Multi-Strike Channeling reduced delay between strikes.

He considered recent fights.

The limitation had shifted again.

It was no longer penetration.

It was duration.

Even with improved control, some creatures required more than one interaction.

Reducing that interaction further would increase safety.

Multi-Strike Channeling aligned best with that goal.

He selected it.

Multi-Strike Channeling Acquired

The change settled into his structure immediately.

The next movement confirmed it.

A creature shifted ahead, larger than the previous one, its body denser and its movement more controlled. He approached carefully, maintaining reduced presence while closing distance.

This time, he did not wait for a perfect opening.

He created one.

He moved faster, forcing a reaction, then adjusted mid-motion, engaging with the Locking Claws as the creature committed to its own attack.

The contact stabilized.

He struck.

The Piercing Stinger drove forward.

Then again.

The second strike followed almost instantly, the delay between actions reduced significantly. The combined effect bypassed the creature's resistance before it could fully react.

The body stilled.

He released and consumed it.

Biomass Gained: +6

Total Biomass: 9

He remained still for a moment after, not because of effort, but because the structure had shifted again.

The jungle remained the same.

The creatures remained varied.

But the way he engaged with them continued to evolve in a direction that made each encounter shorter, more controlled, and more predictable as he moved further into the environment.
