Chapter 20 - Chapter 20

Chapter 20: The Blue Wall of London

The coach ride into West London was different. There was no "United Trinity" statue here. Instead, there were blue banners and a sense of modern, ruthless efficiency. Stamford Bridge was a fortress. Under Jose Mourinho, Chelsea hadn't lost a home league game in years.

[System: "Warning: Tactical Complexity Level - Extreme. Enemy Manager: Jose Mourinho. Strategy: 'The Low Block.' He has placed a 3-man 'Kill Zone' in the midfield specifically for you. Current SP: 3,045."]

In the dressing room, the air was thick. Sir Alex was pacing, his gum snapping like a whip. "They're going to try and bully you. Essien and Makelele aren't Sporting kids. They are grown men. If you hold the ball for more than two seconds, you'll be leaving the pitch in an ambulance."

Mide looked at his teammates. Even Rooney looked tense. This was the clash for the top of the table.

The Match: The Cold Reality

The whistle blew, and within five minutes, Mide realized this wasn't Lisbon. He received a pass from Scholes and before his Emperor's Compass could even map the field, a blue tidal wave hit him.

Michael Essien didn't just tackle him; he treated Mide like a brick wall he needed to demolish.

BAM.

Mide hit the turf hard. His Predictive Impact saved his ankle, but the wind was knocked out of him.

[System: "Stamina: 85%. Impact Damage: Minor. Baba's Note: Welcome to the 'Bison,' Oga. Essien has a Physical stat of 92. You are currently a 62. If you try to turn him, he will snap you like a dry twig."]

Mide struggled to his feet, tasting copper in his mouth. He looked at the touchline. Mourinho was standing there, arms crossed, a smug smirk on his face. He didn't even look at the ball; he was looking at Mide.

In the 28th minute, Chelsea struck. Frank Lampard intercepted a lazy pass from Fletcher and launched a 40-yard missile to Didier Drogba. Rio Ferdinand lunged, but Drogba shielded the ball with terrifying strength, turned, and lashed it into the top corner.

1-0 to Chelsea.

The Bridge erupted. The "Blue Is The Colour" chant drowned out everything. For the first time in ten chapters, Mide felt the cold weight of being behind.

The Tactical Suffocation

The rest of the first half was a nightmare. Every time Mide touched the ball, Claude Makélélé was there. The man was a shadow. He didn't even tackle; he just occupied the space Mide wanted to move into.

[System: "Oracle Sight: ERROR. The 'Passing Lanes' are being manually closed by Makélélé. He is baiting you into a trap. If you pass to the left, Ashley Cole is waiting. To the right, Paulo Ferreira. You are trapped in the 'Mourinho Box'."]

Mide tried a Phantom Step to get past Essien, but Essien didn't fall for the feint—he simply grabbed Mide's jersey and hauled him down. The referee waved play on.

"You're not in Lagos now, boy," Essien hissed in his ear. "Stay down."

At halftime, the United dressing room was silent. Sir Alex didn't scream. He just stared at the floor. "They're killing the game. Mide, you're playing like a ghost. Where's the 'King' I saw against Arsenal?"

"The King is being hunted, Boss," Mide said, his chest heaving. "I need to change the frequency."

The Second Half: The Desperate Push

Mide came out for the second half with a different fire. He realized he couldn't out-muscle them, and his "No-Look" passes were being intercepted by Lampard's high IQ.

Baba, I need to upgrade something. Now.

[System: "You have 3,045 SP. You could upgrade 'Cheetah's First Step' to Level 2 (500 SP) or 'Center of Gravity' to Level 2 (600 SP). Or... you could gamble on 'Gravity Well' (1,500 SP)."]

Give me Level 2 Cheetah and Level 2 Center of Gravity. I need to be stickier and faster.

[System: "Processing... 1,100 SP Deducted. Remaining: 1,945. Upgrades applied. Your legs feel like pressurized pistons. Your balance is now 'Elite'."]

65th minute. Mide dropped even deeper, almost to the defense. He took the ball from Vidić. Essien charged.

Mide didn't run away. He ran at him.

As Essien threw his weight into a shoulder barge, Mide's Level 2 Center of Gravity kicked in. He didn't fly off; he absorbed the hit, pivoted on his heel, and used Essien's own momentum to spin past him.

"What?!" Essien shouted, stumbling.

Mide was clear. He ignored the "Cog" logic. He saw the Blue Wall ahead—Terry and Carvalho.

He triggered Level 2 Cheetah.

The burst was so violent it left a literal skid mark on the Stamford Bridge turf. He flew past Lampard. He was at the edge of the box. John Terry dived into a "career-ending" slide tackle.

Mide didn't jump. He used a Phantom Step while mid-sprint, shifting the ball just an inch. Terry's studs grazed Mide's shin—Predictive Impact adjusted the angle—and Mide stayed on his feet.

He was one-on-one with Petr Čech.

Mide didn't shoot. He saw Ronaldo screaming at the back post. He feinted a shot, drawing Čech to the near post, then dinked a soft, beautiful cross over the keeper's head.

Ronaldo didn't even have to jump. He headed it into an open net.

1-1.

The War of Attrition

The goal silenced the Bridge, but it didn't break Chelsea. Mourinho immediately made three defensive subs. They parked the bus. They fouled. They wasted time.

In the 88th minute, Mide had one last chance. A free kick from 25 yards.

He stood over the ball. The "Royal Adjustment" was the last thing on his mind. He was covered in mud, his lip was bleeding, and his left sock was ripped to shreds.

He struck it. A dipping, swerving shot.

Clang!

It hit the crossbar. The ball bounced on the line and spun out. The referee signaled no goal.

The final whistle blew. 1-1.

[System: "Match Result: Draw. SP Gained: 0 (No win bonus). Goal Assist: +150 SP. Total SP: 2,095. You survived the Bison, but the 'Invincible' home record of Mourinho remains. How does it taste, Oga? Reality?"]

Mide sat on the grass, looking at the crossbar. He wasn't smiling.

John Terry walked over and offered a hand to pull him up. "You've got balls, kid. Most boys your age cry when Essien hits them. See you at Old Trafford."

Mide took the hand. "I won't hit the bar next time, John."

The Aftermath: A Lesson Learned

In the tunnel, Mourinho stopped Mide. He didn't smirk this time. He looked Mide up and down.

"You," Mourinho said in his low, gravelly voice. "You have the talent of a poet and the skin of a soldier. But in this league, the soldiers win the trophies. Remember that."

Mide didn't respond. He just kept walking.

[System: "New Relationship Unlocked: Jose Mourinho (Respectful Adversary). Tactical Genius XP Gained: +500. Baba's Note: You just realized that 'Future Knowledge' doesn't mean a guaranteed win. The legends of 2006 aren't just names in a database; they are monsters. You need to get stronger."]

As he got on the bus, his phone buzzed. It was a photo from Lagos.

It was Victor Osimhen, seven years old, wearing a brand new pair of boots Mide had sent. The boy was smiling, holding a tattered football.

Mide's frustration vanished. A draw at the Bridge was a small price to pay for the future of a King.

"The soldiers win trophies, Jose?" Mide whispered to himself. "Then it's time I start a draft."
