Chapter 26 - CHAPTER 24: Opportunities and Unspoken Fears

Monday morning didn't feel like chaos.

It felt… heavy.

Lia Henderson stood behind the counter at The Daily Grind, staring at the same cup she'd been holding for the past thirty seconds.

The espresso machine hissed like always.

Customers chatted like always.

Everything looked normal.

But something wasn't.

"…You've been staring at that cup like it personally offended you," Ethan Cruz said, sliding beside her.

"…I'm thinking," she replied.

"…That's dangerous," he teased.

She didn't laugh.

That's when he knew something was wrong.

"…Okay," he said more gently. "…What's going on?"

Lia hesitated.

Then reached into her apron pocket and pulled out an envelope.

"…I got this yesterday," she said.

"…And?"

"…It's from a café group," she explained. "…A big one. They're opening a new branch in the city."

Ethan nodded slowly. "…Okay…"

"…They want me to manage it."

Silence.

Not awkward.

Just… heavy.

"…That's amazing," Ethan said finally.

And he meant it.

But something in his voice didn't land the way she expected.

"…Yeah," she said quietly. "…It is."

"…So what's the problem?" he asked.

She looked at him.

"…It's in another city."

That landed.

"…Oh," he said.

Not dramatic.

Not loud.

Just… real.

"…It's a huge opportunity," Lia continued. "…Better pay, bigger place, more responsibility…"

"…It's everything you've worked for," Ethan finished.

"…Yeah," she said softly.

Another pause.

"…So," he said carefully, "…you're going to take it?"

She didn't answer right away.

"…I don't know," she admitted.

For the first time in a long time, there was no joke.

No playful comment.

No chaos to hide behind.

Just two people trying to understand what this meant.

"…You should," Ethan said finally.

Lia blinked. "…What?"

"…You should take it," he repeated. "…It's a big deal."

"…And what about us?" she asked quietly.

There it was.

The question neither of them wanted to ask.

Ethan looked down at the counter.

"…We'll figure it out," he said.

"…That's not an answer," she said.

"…It's the only one I have right now," he replied honestly.

She nodded slowly.

"…I've always wanted something like this," she said. "…But now that it's here…"

"…It's complicated," he finished.

"…Yeah," she said.

The café noise suddenly felt louder.

Too loud.

Like it was filling the space where their words couldn't.

"…I don't want to lose this," Lia said softly.

Ethan looked at her immediately.

"…You won't," he said.

"…You don't know that," she replied.

"…I know I'm not giving up on you," he said firmly.

That helped.

But it didn't solve everything.

"…I need time," she said.

"…Take all the time you need," he replied.

"…And you?" she asked.

He gave a small smile.

"…I'll be right here," he said.

For once…

No chaos interrupted them.

No spilled coffee.

No flying muffins.

Just a quiet moment that felt bigger than anything they'd faced before.

Because this wasn't about a broken espresso machine.

Or a bad day.

Or even fear.

This was about choice.

And what came next.
