Chapter 1 - EVERYTHING CHANGED AT 2:17AM

At exactly 2:17 AM, Jan's phone lit up.

He wasn't asleep.

He hadn't been for a while.

The room was silent, filled only with the faint ticking of the clock and the weight of unfinished thoughts. His books were open, but his mind wasn't there.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

"Don't trust tomorrow."

Jan frowned, staring at the screen.

Wrong number… maybe.

Another message came instantly.

"You won't understand now. But you will."

Something about it didn't feel like a prank. It felt… personal.

Jan typed back.

"Who is this?"

No reply.

The silence that followed was heavier than the message itself.

---

Morning came like any other, but something inside Jan felt slightly misaligned — like the world had shifted by one degree.

His father's voice filled the house, sharp and impatient, talking about money and work like emotions didn't exist. Jan barely reacted.

The doorbell rang.

When Jan opened the door, he saw a man with tired eyes and beside him, a girl holding a worn-out bag.

She didn't look scared.

She looked… quiet.

Not weak.

Just silent in a way that felt deep.

They entered the house.

For a brief second, her eyes met Jan's.

And something unexplainable passed between them.

---

Her name was Julie.

She spoke very little, but she noticed everything.

Jan found himself watching her — not because she demanded attention, but because she didn't.

Days passed.

Then weeks.

It started with small things — returning a misplaced book, asking a soft question, sitting quietly while he studied.

Then it became something else.

She started understanding him.

Without words.

Without effort.

---

One afternoon, while studying, Julie suddenly said,

"You're not focused."

Jan looked up, surprised.

"You can tell?"

"You keep checking your phone."

He gave a small smile.

"Something weird happened."

She didn't ask what.

She just said,

"Then don't let it control you."

For someone who barely spoke, she always said exactly what mattered.

---

That night, at 2:17 AM, the message returned.

"You're getting closer."

Jan's heart raced.

"Who are you?" he typed.

"Someone who already lost her."

His fingers froze.

"If you don't protect her… you will regret it forever."

Jan slowly looked toward Julie's room.

For the first time, fear settled inside him.

Not for himself.

For her.

---

Time passed, and feelings grew without permission.

They laughed more.

Talked more.

Stayed longer together.

One evening, while solving a problem, their hands touched.

Neither moved.

The silence between them said everything they couldn't.

Something had changed.

Something irreversible.

---

Then life broke.

Julie's father died suddenly.

The world didn't shatter loudly.

It collapsed quietly.

Julie didn't scream.

She just stopped speaking.

And Jan stayed.

Not with words.

But with presence.

He held her when she finally broke.

And in that moment, they became more than just two people.

They became each other's home.

---

Years passed.

Dreams grew.

Together.

At a railway station, under a fading sky, Jan held Julie's hand.

"I'll come back," he said.

"I'll wait," she replied.

Their fingers slowly slipped apart as the train began to move.

Distance wasn't just physical.

It was the beginning of something neither of them understood.

---

In a foreign land, Jan fought for a future.

But something was wrong.

The calls from Julie became less frequent.

Not because she stopped trying.

But because he stopped answering.

---

The diagnosis came like a quiet sentence.

Cancer.

Jan didn't react immediately.

He just sat there, staring at nothing.

Out of all possibilities… this?

That night, at 2:17 AM—

"Now you understand."

Tears filled his eyes.

"This is why you couldn't tell her."

Jan looked at Julie's messages.

"I miss you."

"Please talk to me."

"Are you okay?"

His chest tightened.

"I can't destroy you like this," he whispered.

So he chose silence.

---

Years later, Julie returned.

Hope still alive in her eyes.

Love… unchanged.

When they met again, she smiled.

But something felt different.

Jan smiled too.

But his eyes carried a truth he refused to speak.

"You changed," she said.

"So did time," he replied.

---

Julie found out the truth on her own.

Hidden reports.

Unspoken answers.

Silence that finally revealed everything.

She broke.

Not because he was dying.

But because he chose to face it alone.

---

"Why didn't you tell me?" she cried.

Jan looked at her, calm but fading.

"I wanted you to live without pain."

Julie shook her head, tears falling endlessly.

"My life… is you."

---

The hospital room became their world.

Not filled with sadness.

But with everything they never got to say before.

They laughed.

They remembered.

They loved… without holding back.

---

One night, at 2:17 AM, Jan's phone lit up for the last time.

"You did better this time."

Jan smiled faintly.

As if he finally understood.

---

Julie held his hand tightly.

"I'm still waiting," she whispered.

Jan looked at her, his voice barely there.

"In every life… I'll find you again."

---

His hand slowly slipped from hers.

And silence took over.

---

Years passed.

Julie became a doctor.

Saving lives.

Living not just her dream…

But his.

---

Every night, at exactly 2:17 AM, she looked at her phone.

Not with sadness.

But with hope.

A quiet, unbreakable hope.

Because some stories don't end.

They pause.

They wait.

They live in moments, in memories, in promises that refuse to fade.

---

And somewhere… somehow…

Love always finds its way back.

---

Until you return.
